My son's box shut down last night. I try to turn it on, it starts for a second then, nothing. I see the light on the MB is lit so the MB is getting power.

I start pulling out memory one by one to see if it will post with no luck. I put the memory back, pull out the GPU, hit the start button and it powers up. Place the GPU in another box. That box will not start. Put GPU from my main cruncher into the kids box and it fires right up.

Plug in fan the GPU and it twitches but the box will not start. No fans, no lights, nothing. I cleaned out the GPU with a can of air not much dusk but some. The fan spins as it should. Prior to it no longer posting it was running MW with ave. temps of 68.
I'm down a GPU now unless I can figure out what is wrong with the one. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like the card kicked the bucket. I would say to try another card in the box that it was in to eliminate the possibility of the pcie slot being bad. But since you tried the card in another box and it did the same thing it all but eliminates that idea.

I've got a pair of Sapphire VaporX 4870's sitting on a shelf collecting dust If you're interested in them.

I would agree with Shadow: Card died. Something electrical maybe that is "shorting" out the MB or PSU and keeping the system from booting. I have actually had ROM drives do this to me before.

Awesome Teammate!! That is a real generous offer Shadow. I'm considering purchasing the GTX 465 to boost the team rac. I do really appreciate the offer tho, thank you.

Yeah if it's not turning on it's probably shorting a power connection triggering a self preservation state.

Unfortunately probably not worth fixing on the 4870, cost wise.

How old is the card that died?

And if the RMA is approved you migth get lucky and get a better card, if your current one cannot be bought anymore....:p

Spoke to them (Asus) today about cross-shipping the RMA, they said they can't cause they do not have the card in stock anymore. Asus claims they will try to repair it or replace it with a newer/better card.
We shall see.

Did you ask them to DEFINE "Newer/Better Card"?

Yes, but the would not elaborate until they could determine that the card I was sending back was unrepairable.

When they talk to you about the replacement be sure to mention that you use it for DOUBLE PRECISION calculations. Otherwise they might be tempted to give you a 5770 etc.

Bryan is RIGHT on! Make sure they give you a new DOUBLE precision card - it is only fair - and the ONLY way to run the programs you need to run for your crunching business ;)

Cheapest one they could get away with sending you is a 5830, if they don't have the 4870 any longer. There, you just did the hard work for them.:D

I don't think they make the 5830 any more either do they?

The 5870 I just got was a clearance part, out of stock forever now. Maybe they'll send you one of those just to get it out of inventory. :D

Thanks for the reminder. DP it is.
I can only hope it's a 5870!! Nice upgrade from a 3 year old 4870. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Got the card back today. Same card hd 4870 512mem.:( Ahh well, not an upgrade but repaired and ready to crunch. Question is do I put it in a box with a 5870 crunching Moo or will it slow down the other card? Perhaps I'll swap out the 5870 and put this in there crunching collatz or MW and place the 5870 in with the other 5870. Looking to get the best card config for crunching. What do you think?

My suggestion would be to pair up the 5870s and turn them loose on Dnet. I'm done with Moo forever. Then put the 4870 in a different box and let run MW.

Maxwell = 2x5970 on Moo to the tune of 1.2M/day. Works on dual dual cards (though I would NOT mix)
