Decent quad-core barebones kit for $199

It only has one PCI-e slot but would be a good upgrade for someone only crunching on a single core or older HT P4/Core2Duo.

Thats a whole computer, that with DrPops 460 find you could have what 400k a day for 300 bucks. I'm not for 1 PCI-e systems but if your grandma is still using a p4 to check her FB it would be a nice gift :).

Was looking at this one the other day. Considering it with some others.

What do you think this machine would pull in a day using CPU only...with say like, Primaboinca?

Just a complete guess on my part based on what my systems where doing when I was crunching full time with 10 cores...........15-18K a day would be my best guess.

This is using AMD CPUs, don't know how they compare to Intel in Prime.

It's a good deal, but if you seriously get into crunching...you will be fit to be tied having bought a mobo with only one PCI-e slot, down the road. Is there any way they let you upgrade these things to a 2 slot mobo for a nominal fee?
The quad AMD's do quite well on Primaboinca, and PG as well. Slicker had one sub-project of PG going on his big AMD Opty rigs that were out producing AQUA in credits / day.

Of course, if you get real into the points thing (man, you guys have really turned me into a credit h* the last couple months! ;) ), there is nothing like a good GPU to make you happy. $100 gets you 300-400k / day, and that's just a starter card these days...it's all up from there depending on the model! :D

It looks like a decent system but be aware that the AMD CPU is the Older Phenom (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103708) and not the Phenom II (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006519%2050001028%2040000343%20600005574&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20). It is still a 64 bit CPU so your good there. It has a smaller L3 cache of 2MB compared to Phenom II with 6MB and the Hyper-transport is about 400Mhz slower. I do not know how much that will affect crunching performance. I'll leave that to the Gurus on the board :)

Remember that AMD cpu's are easily over-clocked because they run a LOT cooler than Intel. I am sure if the board allows this will hit 3.4 or higher. Just depends on what kind of cooling you have for it.

Not knocking it for what it is -- a computer for $200? Amazing.

I'm just saying for me, I wouldn't get anything less than an AM3 socket mobo, and arguably it should be 2 pci-e slots at least...because when all these 400 series CUDA cards get upgraded in the future, there's going to be a lot of "FREE GTX 460's" and the like floating around this team for members with open pci-e slots who can give them a good home. :cool:
