Nov. 12th. I'm hoping that the 5970 is in stock before the code expires.

Yeah...if they would have had the 5970 at that price, I would have bought it instead of the 2 cards I got!
That is a crazy good deal. (Or was when it was in stock. ;))

Thanks, Mike!
Unfortunately that promo code is only for "ABS" cases / PSUs, which I just found out by trying it on the HAF 932 case. ;)

The GSKILL 4GB DDR3 code is nice, though - that's really awesome RAM, and the 10% off on mobos works.

EDIT: I used those promo codes and netted me a little savings on the RAM and MOBO. Now I just have to order the case and CPU.

You get the biggest bang for the buck with this card right now. I compare GFLOPS between cards but if money is no option, then of course the 5970 is the way to go. Sorry about the formatting, I can't seem to figure how to get all of the numbers in a row.

Card GFLOPS Cost GFLOPS/$ Cost per GFLOP
HD 5850 2088 $189.00 11.05 $0.09
HD 5830 1792 $165.00 10.86 $0.09

HD 5970 4640 $700.00 6.63 $0.15

Yes. Chalk a +1 up for FRY's. When I told them about my mobo catching fire, they agreed it could just as easily be the CPU as well as the board - and no questions asked, actually told me to take a refund (as opposed to swapping for a new CPU) until I knew for sure my board was good.
Now I'm glad they did! :D

Yes. Yoyo, DNETC, and Primaboinca run on it. And, you can get a PrimeGrid test project to run on it as well, though not through BOINC (you can get BOINC credits, though).

Here's a good one for any regular eBayers. Check your eBay messages for one titled "Earn 10% plus a bonus $5 in eBay Bucks". The deal is you have to download Internet Explorer 9 from the link in the message, set it up as directed and then use IE9 while making eBay purchases. When you do you will receive an extra 8% in eBay Bucks on top of the regular 2% offered by eBay. This promotion is for a limited time but it is worth it. After the promo is over you can DELETE IE9 and be done with it.

Note: If you already have IE9 then I suggest you uninstall it. Reboot and then DL from IE9 from the link.

Ok, this may not be a really huge deal but if you are willing to gamble, you may get upwards of half a million credits (perhaps more) a day if you luck out with a "good" card that you can OC.

That is quite a deal. I have used XFX re-certified cards and have had very good luck with them. 9600GSO, GTX 9800, and GTX 260 are all re-certs. Might be worth looking into. Might just be able to snag one.

As I stated before with my GTX 465, it is a gamble! You may get a card that does not work. You may get a card that has no OCing potential (probably only 400K a day which still is not bad) but if you get a solid card, you could probably get 500k+ a day.

True... although, what ms refresh rate does it have, and what resolution for such a giant screen? I mean, that is definitely one way to do it, and I'm not dissing on it-- but it can't be the solution for everyone. Imagine a 47" TV on your desk and telling your boss, "Honest, man, I need it for work!" :)) :D

And if I ever want to get adventurous and move into Maxwell territory, I've got a 55 inch TV with more hookups than I'll ever know what to do with. As for it pleasuring me at night, well I don't think that feature was included with mine. :p

So Newegg has a few deals in their email today.

If you want a low cost/power cruncher you can go this route.

A little more power/money and you can go this route which I think will take an i5 or i7 in there (although not sure how a giant CPU Cooler would look on that board).

The heat sinke, GPU, and power supply would increase the size by 300% as each is larger than the MB itself. It would be interesting to create a muli-MB computer with something like this though. What's the cheapest case that supports two power supplies?

If it would give me half as good of love as my wife I would buy it right this second! :)) ;) Man, what a deal, you guys don't understand how tempting this is; the 5970 has been my dream cruncher since it came out. It is literally the most efficient GFLOPS / Watt cruncher in the world. And I so value efficiency. . . :D

Ah. Thanks. Let me sleep on the possibilities. . . I was not prepared to shell out more this month, but sometimes it just works that way. I doubt I will see a new one of these anywhere else. It is still more efficient than anything in the 6xxx series, or anything NVIDIA has to offer. I was considering waiting for the 7xxx series, but a new dual GPU card in that series will cost more than double this deal. Hmmm... :o

Ah dang it all to heck, mate. It's 2 AM and you've got me up reading everything I can get my hands on. This is a major hard decision because 5970 new for $299 is a steal. But, the new 7000 series coming out very soon is supposed to have like 21+GFLOPS /Watt! :D
What to do...what to do... ;)

I would not buy this Card being it's a 59xx Card, I don't remember what but something about the 59xx Cards that made them unsuitable for BOINC, the 58xx & 69xx Cards are faster with a slight edge to the 69xx Cards ... If you go look at the MOO & Collatz Top Computers List you don't see any 59xx Cards, there may be some but their way back in the list if there is any ...

I know Bryan has a few of these and while not as effcient at Moo as 2 5870's it is taking up only one slot and will out crunch any single gpu card on Moo at this time. I think at this price it is something to consider. The newer cards will be much more, double or better when they come out.

Now for a sweet deal.

@ Steve - yeah, I understand what you're saying, and Bryan cautioned me not to buy a used one. But GFLOPS /Watt and GFLOPS /$$$, this is the best deal I've seen. You can easily O/C it to the speed of the 5870, because it's the same parts inside - just 2 sandwiched together. The issue is, they run hot, so from what I understand, you have to have really good airlow to run these things O/C and crunching 24/7. That's why I decided on that 10 slot Rosewill Thor V2 case; it had the lowest GPU temps in that Tom's test, due to the airflow.

But as you say, it is a slight risk over one of the newer ones, but surely they will be crazy expensive when they come out, at least initially! :p

I hear you, been mulling over it all day whether to get a few myself or not, very tempting but with the Newer Models on the Horizon I just don't know. At the worst I'm thinking I could sell them for what I paid for them if not for more in 6-8 month's for the price their selling for. I'd have some GTX 460, 470 & a 480 for sale if I bought some if anybody was interested in them, if not I'll just put them up on Amazon where I have a sellers Account already ...

EDIT: I broke down & ordered 4 of them before they ran out, needed a few more ATI Box's anyway so the deal was to good to ignore ... :D

Oh - my. . . Wow! I had to reread that a couple times to make sure I was reading the right thing. :D Four HD 5970s? That is awesomely amazing! And here I am agonizing over a single board. :p

@Mike029 - very class act. You still had a PI-e slot empty? Congrats on the new horse in the stable, what an awesome upgrade.

Well, you guys getting some has really encouraged me. I like what SteVe mentioned, probably my able to resell these later on for nearly same money, if for some reason they don't work out.
So you guys have convinced me. One HD 5970 on the way to our office! :D

STE\/E
11-26-11, 04:06 AM
lol ... After thinking about it for awhile it was really a no Brainer for me, I only have 2 ATI Cards right now, a mismatched pair 5850 & 5870, works but not the most efficient set up to run MOO with but that's all I was left with after selling off all the other ATI Cards I had late last year to buy NVIDIA Cards. By getting 4 of the 5970's I'll have a little stronger ATI Force & can sell the 5850 & 5870, if they don't sell it's no big deal as they'll be there for back up or to run in another Box if I want to.

I'll also be able to pull some of the lower end NVIDIA Cards I have & try to sell them too & like I said earlier I'm pretty sure I'll be able to sell the 5970's if I want to in 6-8 Month's for either what I paid for them or even slightly more. So I'll get to use them until the Newer Models (7000 Series) come out & make a decision what to do then based on the Price & Performance of the New Models ...

Speaking of icons, can we use the seti.usa eagle icon for our project's. For instance, on the challenge's chat page, I come up with the bonic generic icon.

I think it might be doable. Maybe create an Eagle head with a Gold ring around it? I can work on some ideas over the weekend.

@EmSti: Yes you can. But you would have to use your browser to save any graphic you see here on the forum. Then save it on your project account(s) or use a web host service like imageshack.us (Its free and much better then photobucket).

@Everyone: One of these weekends when I can coordinate with BOK, I want to setup a page or two on the forum for old and new team graphics/banners. Like the ones I use when posting challenge stats. It should be on the admin ToDo list. I'll add it if its not there.

If anyone is looking or in the market for a new case:
Great deal on a sweet Thermaltake Chaser MK-I (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133191&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL050812&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL050812-_-EMC-050812-Index-_-ComputerCases-_-11133191-L012B) Full Tower case, the same one I just got for Cheetah. Newegg now has it on 48 hour sale for $99 after MIR with Promo Code: EMCNENB52

You won't be disappointed with the build quality - fit and finish is excellent just like the HAF series - or size - while not quite as tall as my Thor V2, it looks perhaps better - less "severe" (depends on tastes, I suppose) and still has 8 expansion slots in the back. I like how you can control the fan speed/noise from a button on the top as well as the LED control. Just pick up a 200mm fan for the side, and it's got good airflow and is quiet to boot.

Sure wish I needed another case. That one looks better then my Black Shark. Glad you like the case. I just like Thermaltake products. They have always held up well for me. I am now running an old Thermaltake Big Water system on my I7 and even though it is 3 years old and has been sitting in a box for at least 2 yeasrs it is crankin' away.

Interesting! What are the advantages over the HAF-X that I have been using?

Edit: The more I look, the more I want. But I need more details. It looks like this was priced at $350 vs. $200 for the HAF-X. Aside from more HD bays, and more fans (but smaller), what is driving the cost difference?

John P. Myers

Interesting! What are the advantages over the HAF-X that I have been using?

Bigger! :p
HAF X: 9.10" x 23.20" x 21.70"
Cosmos II: 13.5" x 27.7" x 26.1"

Theft proof! (too heavy to steal) :D

11 slots for GPUs

More mounting locations for more fans with a built-in 4-channel speed controller

Supports larger mobos

etc.

Cool. I though I had standardized on HAF-X. I really like having R-O-O-M to install things, change things, move things around...all WITHOUT cutting my hands. But I think I have a new standard. :D

About the fans though, how is the noise? The thing I really like about the HAF-X is that it uses really big and QUIET fans. How is the nose level on the Cosmos II in comparison?

About the fans though, how is the noise? The thing I really like about the HAF-X is that it uses really big and QUIET fans. How is the nose level on the Cosmos II in comparison?

The Cosmos II is also made by Coolermaster and would use the same Coolermaster fans so shouldn't be much difference.

Well yeah, but the kind of fans are very different. The HAF-X uses a couple huge fans, spinning slower. The Cosmos II uses normal sized fans, and lots of them.

Nope. The Cosmos II has one front intake 200mm fan pre-installed plus a second mount for a 120m fan. The top fan mounts accept x2 120mm fans, x2 140mm fans (my setup) or x1 200mm fan. Rear exhaust has a pre-installed 140mm fan but also accepts a 120mm fan. Lower HDD cage has x2 pre-installed 120mm fans. Other 120mm fan mount points includes rear facing GPU fan and x2 side GPU fans.

Edit: The more I look, the more I want. But I need more details. It looks like this was priced at $350 vs. $200 for the HAF-X. Aside from more HD bays, and more fans (but smaller), what is driving the cost difference?

Separate cooling section for PSU, built-in multi-fan controller, room for 2 240x120mm rads and most importantly..... Style, style style....!!!!!

2nd edit: I think it also has wider internal dimensions.

Stupid newegg let me down. Their comparison messed it up. There are two different fan sections. I missed the second section at the bottom, completely unrelated to the section at the top. Grrrr.

Thanks for making clear what they did not.

No problem. If you want a better idea of what the case offers take a look at the video in the overview section of their product page.

Another good video review is this NCIX one (its funny too)

Come on now, F$ - THOR V2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147053) has ALL them style marks! :)) :D heh...just kidding. I admit it's not nearly as sexy as your Cosmos, but it does get the job done. Here's what I'm thinking, tell me if I'm wrong - I think this is a case for those trying to stuff more than 3 high end GPUs in a cruncher. If you're going to go for 4 BIG GPUs, 24/7 crunching, then this is the case for you. Otherwise....the difference in price between my case and yours will buy you some nice crunchin' hardware!

True, true true. To be honest, I started saving up for the case back in January and the only reason I got it so soon was that 2/3 of the cost was a sort of early father's day gift. Otherwise I'd still be wishing.....

Maybe this will help you put the size difference into perspective:
WxHxD

Thor V2: 9.14" x 22.84" x 21.89" = 4569.7 cu. in.
HAF X: 9.10" x 23.20" x 21.70" = 4581.3 cu. in.
Cosmos II: 13.5" x 27.7" x 26.1" = 9760.1 cu. in.

Go go Cosmos II :D

Oh wow! I didn't realize it was double in size! Dang...just looking @ my Thor V2 - where would I even put something double that volume? Nuts...;)

Ok so i'm a little late with this question but i believe the price of all AMD 7000 series except the GHz will be cut by 40% starting monday. Am i too late to prevent anyone from pulling the trigger?

Just kidding!! :D

Edit: seriously the next price drop, other than any possible holiday specials which may or may not happen, would be in January
