Got the new webserver which I plan on actually being the new DB server..

It's a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 mobo with an intel 2600K cpu.

Big problem though as I tried my trusty CentOS 5.6 install disk it does not recognize the SATA drives.

Has a bunch of ports on the Intel Z68 driver and two on a Marvell 88SE9172 chip and neither are recognized. And I can't find a driver for either....

Any experience? Could try Gentoo again. I'm actually downloading a Fedora 15 iso right now to see if that supports it at all. Even if I find a Marvell driver it wouldn't be enough to support the DB server..

It's actually got SATA 3 connectors and if I could get hold of a couple of SATA 3 120Gb SSD drives and get the db server installed on it, it would be quite a bit faster again than the current one..

It'll be faster anyway even with the current SATA 2 SSD's I have, given the older one is a core i7-920 a stock speeds, I've already bumped this one up to 4Ghz without it breaking a sweat... just thinking about the disk transfers I do between live and calc databases...

But I need to get a linux distro that has the drivers or standalone drivers first... :(

Hmm, update.

It might actually be because I'm installing from a USD DVD drive. Just tried an http install and it recognized the drive just fine and is installing now.. strange

I don't have a sata dvd drive at all and there are no IDE sockets !

I'm guessing he wouldn't have needed my help.

I was posting with you in mind :)

I've got little experience on the modern hardware...

Glad to hear you found a solution. A possible issue with our USB DVD Drive could be related to its USB versioning. If it is v1.x it is a good bet that is the issue. Why? Not sure to be honest but many of the new USB III capable chipsets are known to have problems with older hardware. For future reference most thumb drives (even the free giveaways) will work as a boot drive. If your interested take a look at the pendrivelinux (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/) website. Great info on USB installations.

I'm more or less confined to older peripherals myself, so I think we're mostly in the same boat. I have a SATA drive in my Dell from 3 or 4 years ago. That's my newest hard drive. Gentoo, if you were to use it, should handle just about anything, though.
