Do to recent non-events, I believe I can spring for $120 worth of GPU. Apparently double precision is out of the question. It looks like the best I can do on NewEgg is an HD 6770. Is it worth it to get a 6770? Will a 6750 do? Do I need to scrape up the money for a 6790 or above? I'm losing a paycheck at the end of this month, so I need to be very careful.

How about this one?

NewEgg: PowerColor AX6790 1GBD5-DH Radeon HD 6790 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131397) $139.99 + Free Shipping

When it's free shipping from NewEgg, it's usually shipping from Memphis and I get it next day if I order early in the day.

I have never heard much (Good or Bad) about PowerColor products. Did a quick ratings check on Newegg and much of their hardware rates very well. Standard warranty so it should be a good purchase. I think it's worth buying if you don't mind going $20 over budget.

Not trying to sound callas, but if you're loosing out on a paycheck, perhaps you may want to consider using the money for something more needed than computer hardware and crunching? If that's not an issue, then perhaps save that money for something else that you'd rather get, versus spending it on something you'd settle for?

What I'd rather get costs twice as much which would not be in the budget and not make sense to my wife. (or me for that matter) A GPU is better than no GPU. I get one I can afford now, or I don't get one at all.

It's a math problem really. I've given a constant (my budget) and I'm asking about the variable (best GPU for the money). You don't solve the problem by trying to change the constant.

The non-event freed up money that offsets my delayed paycheck. I'm not losing a paycheck; I'm just getting it a week later. My company is going bi-weekly. They offered (they're so kind) to give us a loan for the missing week, but most of us have opted out of that.

So, I won't be crunching Milkyway, but I do plan on crunching Moo or any other AMD optimized project that doesn't like CUDA. Then I'll have one of each, a balanced attack.

Maybe someone has a 4870 laying around that they are not using anymore..................

Trig, it's really late and I just got back into town. If you haven't bought one yet, hang on just a sec and let's see what we can come up with. The 6xxx series is really over priced for crunching power compared to 4870 or 58xx. Give me a bit if.you can to find a good match here...;)
