Hmmm. Buy a $1,100 GPU and get a Motherboard free. Nice bundling. :)

How long do you think that will out crunch mainstream GPUS? 1 year before a $300.00 GPU could crunch more per? This hobby, IMHO is all about the sweet spot. Get the fastest gpu for the best price. We had a thread started on the old forums where someone broke down price, stones, power consumption etc. That was a real good thread. Will it out crunch 4 5870's? What a sweet beast tho. :)

Yes, they are both expensive, great to look at, and eventually a newer model will out-preform them but damn what a rush for now. :D

The problem is I'd imagine the weight of the card could potentially damage the mobo.

The problem is I'd imagine the weight of the card could potentially damage the mobo.

The Cooler Master HAF X case is one of the best cases that I have bought; it is very well constructed and with the point you bring up, in the past, the blades of most peripheral cards sat rather loosely when installed relying on the MOBO to support the weight of the card in many instances.

On the HAF X the blade of the card actually slides nicely into the metal frame; in addition, it comes with a bracket that can be installed to secure the video cards in place as seen in the photo below. This card that I threw into the case even without the MOBO was tight in position without the bracket. Also, an 80 x 15 mm fan can be installed in the bracket for additional cooling to the cards.

So as far as this particular case is concerned, the weight on the MOBO would be zero for all practical purposes but you do bring up a valid point; video cards are steadily becoming heavier since massive heat sinks are required for the horsepower many of these GPU's pack.

It wouldn't surprise me to see in the future, GPU's take the place of the MOBO and the MOBO plug into the GPU.

No, no, no. The correct analogy is "how long". :p

Seriously. The buy-it cost is fixed, and easily paid. Same with the cards. It is the cost over time that kills you. ;)
