I was originally going to try to throw together a rig with this CPU; however, I'm not sure it is worth the cost to buy a AM2 motherboard for only 2 cores.

Perhaps someone out there already as a spare board that this will run on, so I figured that I would offer it to any of you that could put it to good use.

This CPU and fan have approximately 6 months of run time on them; they have been sitting in a box for about 2 years. The only reason I changed out the CPU's on an old rig was to go to a quad core 955.

So, not worth buying a Motherboard for?

Well, I guess it's all a matter of opinion. I was looking for an AM2 board and I found a few (I forgot where) but the inexpensive ones only support the <95w CPU; the 6400 is a 125w processor.

I would have to go to a more expensive board but if I did that I would rather put a quad or hex core system together. Hard to justify, for me at a least, the cost of a system to run only a 2 core processor.

I figure if someone here already had an old board in their parts box that support the AM2 but didn't have the CPU for it, then perhaps they could use this.

It's an open box special, but for $36 it should work! ;) If it can take a Phenom X6, it'll take this CPU as well.
Just an option for anyone that's interested...

PS - I used to have one of these CPUs in a rig I ended up giving to a friend for an AutoCAD workstation, and it's a surprisingly fast CPU. I don't know if it's because it runs so high frequency or what, but that was a very "snappy" feeling machine.

I could use it to upgrade my 5200 if no one needs it. I would hate to stop an extra cruncher

I got a 5600+ that could use an upgrade.
