    Building another cruncher!!

Ok, before you all call me crazy.
My sister needs a new computer. I told her I'll build it if she lets me crunch on it.
SHE AGREED!! Now, I only have a $400.00 budget.
This is what I have lying around.
    Old case with fans,
    HD,
    os (Win vista),
    monitor,
and I have 2 hd 5870's to put into the box.

The computer will be used by my niece for homework and internet. I'll need a PSU, MB, a processor, (hoping to go with an Amd 6 core if it fits the budget) and memory.

    All help is appreciated.

Right around $400 there. I think 850W is enough to drive those 2 5870s at stock speeds. Someone chime in if I am wrong.

I run dual 5870s OC'd to the hilt w/ 750W. Also have 2 machines w/ 5970s running at 900 MHz on 750W. All machines supporting I7s and crunching too.

I hope some one is watching this one if they are trying to upgrade. This is a good price for this type of board.

RETIRED. NO JOB. NO MONEY. NO WORRIES!

Crunched SETI Classic to the end.

First the disclaimer The I series are temperamental. Obviously a series made by a woman.

Bang for Buck I love them at $100. You can't find a 3 pci-e board for less.

NP DP. This is what I was looking for with my edit. Get multiple ideas out there and let Mike choose what he likes............or confuse the hell out of him!!

EDIT: My parts were picked based on the $400 budget. That is why I chose what I did.

Yeah, you did a very good job with the budget, I thought, plus that was exactly what he asked for - a high end AMD system. I just wanted to throw up out a Sandy Bridge option because of the lower electric bill and future CPU upgrade.

The Sandy Bridge platform rig would cost $425 until he got the rebate back from the PSU, making it $400 again.

    Re: Building another cruncher!!

Thanks to everyone who replied. I should have remembered F$ PSU breakdown from mu last build. Looks like Joker put together a solid option for me. I appreciate the help.

I was thinking that the AMD 6 core processor gave me more bang for the buck. With the Sandy Bridge idea that Dr Pop put out there I have something to think about. A few questions come to mind.
I believe the AM3 is at an end. Will this MB handle newer Sandy Bridge processors in order to upgrade on day in the future? I really don’t think she will be upgrading and she wants this box to be able to get my niece through high school. (She is 10) Her last computer was a Dell P4 from 2003/04
Will I run into any problems running either build (Intel 4 core or AMD 6 core) with only 4 gigs of memory?

I'm looking to get this ordered in a week or so.
