Thinking of upgrading MOBO and CPU

I am just looking to maybe bump up my crunching a little. I am having problems getting my current mobo to see both of my gpu's so that also is a reason that I am looking into upgrading. I am not brand loyal so any product is fair game. I just want to be able to get more points and run multpile gpu's for crunching.

Here is my current set up.

What is the problem that you're seeing where it's not showing both GPUs?

Windows does not see it. It does not show up in device manager. I can only get one card to work at a time one card is a gtx465 the other is a gtx280. I give up on it I been tryin to figure it out for a month only thing i can think of is somthing is up with my mobo.

Will the 465, for example, work in both slots?

And did we cover this in another thread, or am I going crazy?

Yeah, he said that both cards work individually - the GTX 460 by itself and the GTX 280 by itself. However, when he goes to add the second card, Windows won't even see it. At first I misunderstood and thought it was a BOINC issue, but it can't be -- for some reason, Windows won't even detect the second GPU.

That sure sounds like the second slot on the mobo is not working properly, doesn't it?

Ok. I remember the conversation now, just not which people were talking in it...

And that second slot might be bad - it would be worth putting one of the cards in singularly in that slot to see if it will work. That will test the slot. Unless that was done, and I really need to remember posts better...

I remember that both cards were tried alone and they both worked alone. But i don't remember if 1 card was tried alone in the 2nd slot to actually specifically test that 1 slot. That's a pretty important test that needs to be done if it wasn't. When i installed my GTX590s, one at a time, windows wouldn't see the 2nd one after the first one was already there. A little fidgeting solved it in under 5 mins.

For what its worth, I had exactly the same problem a week ago when trying to install 2 5870's. Previously I only had one GTX260 on this. I worked on this problem for hours as I do not give up easy. This was my sequence of install:

    1. Uninstall GPU drivers and any associated programs using "Add/Remove Programs" in your Control Panel. Make sure you reboot every time before you uninstall the next one.

    2. Check your hardware settings in Device manager to see what drivers are installed now. At this stage you should see only Standard VGA Device listed. If it still shows the previous drives than uninstall it there.

    3. To make sure that all remnants of previous drivers are removed from your Registry, use the "Driver Sweeper" program. Again make sure that you reboot when it is finished.

The final part of the uninstall process is important. Reboot into your BIOS Settings. In my case, pressing DEL on reboot. Reset all you BIOS setting to factory default. This will force the BIOS to search for new devices.

    4. Install the latest drivers for your GPU from their website.

This worked for me even though I also thought that the MB was faulty for I had no fan working on the second card. Those GPU cards are very fussy sometimes.
