I no longer have the computer with the nVidia card. I took your advise and added MilkyWay@Home. However, my cpid is different than my other projects. Will this corrected itself when my computer connects to report results? I already hit the update button. Can you set MilkyWay to only run ATI card and not the CPU?

If you prefer space science, MilkyWay@Home is another good option. Collatz may be the best option for the nVidia 9600 GS, but it would also get at least 1K per day. If you have any question on how to get those GPUs crunching, just ask!

First off, welcome to the boards! You should be able to set the CPU and GPU usage under your account at the MW project under the project's preferences.

Just got a message from BOINC manager stating an ATI GPU supporting double precision math is required. Gheeesh, this GPU is brand new.

Unfortunately only certain quite high-end cards of each series support double precision. Try Moo! Wrapper or Collatz, it will work great and get you a ton of points compared to CPU only.

OK, that's cool. Do you like crunching POEM? If you do, awesome...if you're not a big POEM cruncher, well, please don't take this the wrong way, but let's just say there are much higher rate of return projects than POEM for that GPU. Which of course, doesn't mean anything if you like to crunch POEM!

Heck - crunching anything on a GPU is just flat out awesome.

I kept getting gpu error warning in my taskbar crunching POEM. I also couldn't get any wu's so I switched to moo. Whenever the screensaver would become active the computer would do an emergency shut off and restart. I've decided not to crunch gpu for now. Anyway, I was afraid of extra heat. I seem to burn through computers faster than other people I know.

Yeah, a lot of screen savers use tons of GPU power. If your using one looking to save energy then the best one to use is "Blank Screen" which needs zero GPU resources. And like the other screen savers it can be locked with a password.

Hi Tant, sorry - we should have mentioned to turn the screen saver off! I didn't realize so
any still used them. The best thing to do is have it shut off the display after 5 mins or so. This will allow your display to go into energy saver mode, because it will shut off the signal from the GPU. Maximum energy saved!

PS - if you are worried about heat, try crunching Collatz on your GPU. Nice and low temp, and very stable.

Sounds like it may be more then just a screen saver issue and the sooner you address the problem the more life you can give that computer... Download a program called gpu-z http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ its very small. click on sensors and whatch your GPU Temp just wait 3 min and boinc will kick in i wouldnt recommend choosing use gpu always to force it to run in boinc cause if it crashes instanly then your computer will boot up and crash as soon as boinc fires up again and you will be stuck in a loop. Don't forget to change the screen saver to blank screen. if your hitting 80C+ you may have some dust bunnies that have found a nice spot to stay warm for the winter. I recomend everyone to open the computer case every once in a while to let the bunnies go free. Just get a can of air duster make sure to not let your fans spin like crazy while your cleaning to avoid damage to the fan and system.

update: just noticed you said it was new, Still might be the power supply overheating if the bunnies made a home there or possibly a driver version i know moo can be picky with the AMD drivers.
