Oh Gawd, when my father was visiting in New Mexico once, and speaking of Acadia, when he was atop the Sandias and was told he was 12,000 ft above sea level, he told them "oh that's nothing. Acadia is 27,000 ft above sea level" Umm yeah, the foot hills in the eastern US isn't like Mt. Everest The native American who hadn't traveled much I'm gathering, and it wasn't until we were leaving he commented "oh, did I say 27,000 ft? I meant 2,700 ft. I guess this is taller" Umm, well yeah, the rockey mountains would tend to be taller then the foot hills we have back east
