"Before The World Ends" MilkyWay@home Challenge Starts 2012-12-14 10:00 UTC

Oh no! Another challenge??? In fairness, F$ added the team to this one at my personal request. A bit self serving, but I'm working on getting my 100 million there. This IS NOT meant to draw resources away from your current goals, other challenges going on now (like NFS) or team focus projects (like Poem.) Higher end cards and cores should be kept on those projects or on your focus. Again, MW@home is not a team focus project. But...if you have an old DP capable card you're not using right now like a 4850 or 4870 or an extra core or two, consider putting them on MW for a week. This is just for the fun of it.

Doesn't MW use all OpenCL apps now? Or, are they still using the CAL/Brook+ apps? If only OpenCL, then those with HD 38xx and HD 48xx GPUs need not apply as AMD doesn't support OpenCL on them any more, and has never supported anything higher than OpenCL 1.0 on them even with older drivers.

CCC 12.6 works fine for my 3 old 4850's. I believe that any newer driver than that will not run the 48xx's on MW. The 38xx is no longer supported.

From one of the tasks done by the 4850:

    Platform 1 information:
    Name: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing
    Version: OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (938.2)
    Vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
    Extensions: cl_khr_icd cl_amd_event_callback cl_amd_offline_devices cl_khr_d3d10_sharing
    Profile: FULL_PROFILE
Using device 0 on platform 1
    Found 1 CL device
Device 'ATI RV770' (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.:0x1002) (CL_DEVICE_TYPE_GPU)
    Driver version: CAL 1.4.1734
    Version: OpenCL 1.0 AMD-APP (938.2)
    Compute capability: 0.0

    From BM Event Log:

    12/13/2012 11:21:00 PM | | NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 560 Ti (driver version 306.97, CUDA version 5.0, compute capability 2.0, 1280MB, 1182MB available, 1312 GFLOPS peak)

    12/13/2012 11:21:00 PM | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 560 Ti (driver version 306.97, device version OpenCL 1.1 CUDA, 1280MB, 1182MB available)

I call it Stynx because it's a conglomeration of spare parts that probably should have been recycled...but it crunches. My wife made me promise she could have her table back in a week.

Yep! I had to move the 2nd 4850 to the PCIEx1 slot for cooling purposes. If anyone has a box they're not using Stynx (and my wife) would like it to have a home...somewhere else. Come on, help me out...she keeps staring and shaking her head at me.

I think it's beautiful in a homely sort of way. But...........it's 2-4850's supported by a Cedarmill processor...running 1 MW cpu wu in addition to the gpus. At one point, this was top of the line hardware....at one point. Amazing what you can put together when there's a challenge.

About 3 days to go and SETI.USA is a solid 3rd. Thanks to all for the help!

Since this wasn't really a fully sanctioned challenge, I don't think we'll see separate Team stats, but here are the current BoincStats.
