    new cruncher coming soon

My wife let me pull the trigger for a new cpu but had to keep it somewhat reasonable. This will be the new home office computer and replace my quad 6600 computer. The quad 6600 will be replacing an old AMD dual core laptop for my son. A lil bit of specs are:

    I7-4770
    12 gig of 1600mhz ram
    1TB HD
    Nvidia Geforce GT635 video card
    Win7 64bit

Nice! Why 12gb, instead of 16gb. It seems an odd amount.

I thought from the title that you were expecting a mini-r2d2 (the kind with 10 fingers and toes) but I'll congratulate you anyway.

12GB should be plenty if you don't run the 2GB RAM per WU projects.

Nice rig, you'll love that CPU compared to the older Core2 Quad. Intel really upped their game with SandyBridge and later.

It was 8 and i opted for extra ram and they offered 12. Thought that it was an odd number, but I'm not complaining. 12 is better then 8.😉

Most likely related to the more recent Intels being Tri-Channel for memory... 3*4 will be slightly more efficient than a 16 Gig set.

If the MEM controller was a triple channel affair, ala 1st Gen i7, then total RAM would a multiple of 3. But i do not recall any Intel 4xxx having triple channel controllers. Hmmmm....

Edit: Haswell uses Dual Channel --> http://ark.intel.com/products/75122 So unless you found a supply of 3GB sticks or 6GB sticks........

you won't be able to use all 12GBs, sorry.

I am guessing two 2gb, and two 4gb.

Unfortunately, mixing sticks of different capacity won't work, at least not well. Back in the single core P4 days you could get away with that.

I think it will be fine if the two 4gb DIMMs are on the same channel, and the two 2gb DIMMs are on the other channel. If they are different speeds, the while thing should work at the slower speed.
