Best "baby GPU?"

Somehow more parts arrived in the mail for me to build another rig up. I'm already pretty maxed with heat output from the GPUs I have currently. What's the consensus these days on the best "baby GPU" to put in a 3930K rig? Is the GTX 750 Ti sill the best bang for the buck on a small GPU or has there been some improvements in the last few generations? AMD or NVidia is fine, doesn't matter which brand to me.

i just built a new HTPC around the i7-6700T 35W CPU. Right now, I'm running a 750 Ti, but hope to upgrade soon to 1050 Ti. I think 750 Ti is still a great card; the 1050 Ti is going to offer a good boost in performance for only a few more watts TDP. Most 1050 Ti cards do not require additional PCI power, only some of the "super clocked" ones take a 6 pin power connector. I looked at some of the new AMD GPUs, but for me the power to performance balance is still with Nvidia.

Like the 750 Ti, there are two tiers of 1050 Ti's, those with 6 pin power that pull up to 120 watts and those without external power connectors that pull no more than 75 watts. The 75 watt, base clock model of 1050 Ti does ~1980 GFLOPS while the 75 watt, base clock model of the 750 Ti does ~1300 GFLOPS. A new 1050 Ti runs about $140 and new 750 Ti runs about $110. Get the GTX 1050 Ti.

But, if your heat threshold is higher than 75 watts, the GFLOP per watt ratio gets better as the GPU get bigger. Before you get a GTX 1050 Ti that pulls up to 120 watts, consider a GTX 1060 that only pulls 120 watts but crunches at 3400-3800 GLFOPS. I don't think you could OC a 1050 Ti that high.

But, doesn't the Radeon RX 460 give about the same performance as the 1050 TI but with double the DP GFLOPs for the same 75W? So with a target of about $109 for the 2GB, that's the winner over the $139 1050 TI, isn't it? Apples to apples, even the 4GB RX 460 at $139 still has the edge in DP, right?

I don't run Milkyway anymore, so I forget about DP. In all the gaming benchmarks, 1050 Ti is the clear winner and uses a bit less power. RX 460 will be much faster on Milkyway, a bit faster on Einstein & Collatz. 1050 Ti will be way faster on PrimeGrid and Amicable Numbers and, of course, the RX 460 can't run GPUGrid.

There is an issue there however. The early RX 460's had only 896 cores, but the more recent ones have 1024, though they're harder to find. ~15% faster than the originals, same 75W TDP.

I have an evga 750ti with bios version 82.07.32.00.50 (p2010-0050) according to GPUz. It doesn't have any additional power inputs. Right now I'm it's running SETI hitting 97-98% GPU load, 58c, power consumption 70% of TDP, PerfCap Reason VOp, VDDC 1.1560v

GPUShark shows the same performance and has - Limiting Policies (NVIDIA): GPU overvoltage limit reached

I've read in the past that these cards use way less than their TDP, kneecapped in the BIOS or something, I'm tracking it down now.

I found the bios and my model which doesn't have additional power, and it says it's 38.5w limited

Basically they neutered them, especially the cards without additional power for motherboard power stability concerns. If you have a quality motherboard, an enthusiast type you can safely go to about 75w out of the pcie slot total, the card will use up to 60w from 12v and another 15w on 3.3v After i find an NVflash setup that works I'll be trying this out.

I've had a 1050 Ti running Amicable Numbers for a few days now. It's the EVGA SSC version, no additional PCIe power. Runs at 1759Mhz and based on the last 100 results generates around 215k/day, a little less than twice as much as a 750 Ti. On 75w or less, that's way better credits/watt than anything I have, except maybe the GTX 970. This 1050 Ti is running in an HTPC with decent airflow, coupled with an i7-6700T 35w processor. I'm seeing some 1050 Tis on Amicable's host stats that are getting better than 225k/day, which is as good as a GTX 960!
