Yes zombie67, that is what we call "marés vivas" and when some windy condition joins to the tides that always happens. The average waves for the Portuguese coast are about 1,5 meters but we can have till 40 meters as we can see by this wave surfed by Garrett McNamara on January 2013 and that is the biggest wave ever surfed. This picture was made in Praia do Norte Nazaré as a prove that he did it.

We have all the Atlantic Ocean with no barriers and in spite we are used to it sometimes people are carry from the beaches for those waves what generally means to die considering the Ocean conditions.

That is why Garret McNamara comes from Hawaii to Portugal to surf but he is not the only one ... he is so to say a bit more crazy than usual. I was seeing that page you posted and it was the same stormy weather.
