Less than ten months have passed since the seventh BOINC Pentathlon came to an end. Now the Pentathlon is back to its usual date from May 5 to May 19 and SETI.Germany invite Team SETI.USA to compete in five disciplines at five projects for the eighth time.

This year, the stable and popular project World Community Grid is set for the City Run discipline, with only one subproject being considered for the Pentathlon.

The teams may enter their favorite WCG subproject and three additional project suggestions while signing up using the registration form at https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/anmeldung.php until April 27. The suggestions will be taken into account in the project selection as described here (https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/25_en_Disciplines.html). Late registration without project suggestions is possible until May 2.

All information about the BOINC Pentathlon is available at Pentathlon pages (https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/), while you can find the answers to many questions in the FAQ (https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/27_en_FAQ.html).

Looking forward to seeing you at the Pentathlon! :)

Many Greetings: Team SETI.Germany

Jeeper's 8th Annual BOINC Pentathlon introduction

It’s time to surpass the limits – not long now until the start of the 8th challenge

The 8 represents a cubic number (is that something one ought to know about?), spiders have 8 legs (aren’t 2 enough?), only 8 planets remain in our solar system (until the definition changes again) and Star Wars is going into its 8th round (and took 40 years to get there).

Every year, fearless crunchers and their teams strike out to seek another adventure. They are not afraid of heat waves in or around the hardware housing. Computers must be chained to the floor, it’s otherwise too risky in case high speed cooling fans trigger UFO sightings. Electric cars will have to do without their charge as the energy is needed for more important ventures. How long is the life of a Tesla-battery if we were to use it for something useful? There are lots of questions …….

An annual event in the calendar since 2010, without a break, without intermission. A recurrent challenge. Each year was a showcase of power. Fighting, worrying, celebrating and suffering until the very last second. And in the end? Once the pain receded, we were left with a feeling of great achievement, exhausted but content in the knowledge to have taken part.

You have probably already guessed it. It will soon begin all over again. The ultimate challenge for body, mind and soul on the one hand and the endurance test for your hardware on the other. Who will risk leaving their comfort zone behind? Who will be larger than life and who will shrink into the corner? This is the ultimate character test. It is time to awaken it, the Starlight Express.

A hearty welcome to the 8th BOINC Pentathlon.

This year is no exception, the fight for the title will be thrilling until the end. Planet3DNow claimed Overall Victory 5 times in succession. It was always hard fought for. The ET-hunters from SETI.Germany and SETI.USA pushed the Green Plant to its limits. We will be expecting another such thrilling battle amongst the trio or will more join them? Will Team China be able to connect with the top ranks? Or are Czech National Team or L’Alliance Francophone in a position to maximise their potential and cause trouble for the BIG3?

We’ve never found the lower ranks boring. Every place was bitterly fought over. Tactical games and strategies were contrived and then implemented. We were well entertained away from the giant beasts. Meisterkuehler, Ukraine and for example BOINC@Poland all took their turn to surprise us. Variety isn’t an alien concept, it’s part of the Pentathlon-DNA.

But I’m not telling you about anything you don’t already know about, the fact that the Overall Standing isn’t everything. Whilst five teams have thus far shared all previous medals amongst themselves, 10 teams were able to grab hold of precious metal in the disciplines. Last year, Team China and Overclock.net succeeded for the first time in adorning themselves with precious metal. Do you think they’ll be able to add to their haul this year?

Once again, 5 disciplines are waiting for our valiant warriors, a demanding Marathon, Swimming in freezing water, a City Run to test the joints, Cross Country for the nature seeking boys and girls and of course the Sprint for the highly reactive. There’s something for everybody as always and for those who don’t want or can’t determine yet, there’s a whole array of permutations in this challenge.

The field is still assembling and one or other will wait with their decision until the very last second. Teams are already succeeding in making their opponents think twice, making them feel insecure and encouraging them to make tactical mistakes. Teams are busy speculating the likely tactics for various projects and hope that the crunch gods will remain on their side. But that is a mistake. The gods on the Pentathlon-Olympus only want one thing, an exciting and mind blowing competition.

32 teams have currently registered. All of last year’s Top15 will once again take part. But we are also able to welcome some newcomers. Starting for the first time will be BEIJING 2022 and Seti@Netherlands. After a long period of absence, boinc.sk and USA are also back on board. It’s not too late, there are a few more hours left for teams to register for the ultimate endurance test.

What’s there left to say?
Who will be able to end the reign of Planet3DNow!?
Will Team China awake their inner dragon?
Are L’Alliance Francophone able to hit back?

As you can see, it will once again be exciting at the 8th BOINC-Pentathlon.
Don’t be afraid – we are ready to start 05.05.17

Yours,
Jeeper

PS: By the way, the chemical element with the atomic number 8 is oxygen – take a deep breath and ready, steady, go.

This is it, team. The last 24 hours of the pentathlon. It's nothing but a slugging match now. It's been an honor. As my boys from Juventus say: Fino Alla Fine!

Awesome job everyone!! Thanks JPM for steering this ship to victory!

Thanks. Everyone did a 10x better job of bunkering this year and i believe that's what really had the biggest impact. Most everyone started on time for once :p

Now that summer is here and temps are hitting the 90's I'll be shutting my farm down till fall to help on the power bills. I'll have the work system only until then. Have fun and full speed ahead !!

Thanks for all your help. I'm down to 40 threads myself, partially summer in NC, partially pending retirement in 95 days. Gone are the days of 170 threads and the $390 monthly electric bill. Unlike you, I won't put everything back online until the next Pentathlon.
