View Full Version : HD4890 died finally...
So I guess the answer to the question of how long the stock HD4890 fan will run at 100% is about 18 months lol.
Anyone have an aftermarket cooler for $30 or less? The one I wanted appears to be off the market now. :( It exhausted hot air out of the case and everything.
Meanwhile, the HD4870 is offline temporarily as well. No GPU points what what?!
Oh, except for the shiney new HD5870 I got for $169 shipped. 8-} It jumped $80 the day after I bought it. Epic!
Might stop slipping spots now. Or at least once I get the 4890 back up (assuming I can find a cooler for it).

Yeah failing that a fan that can at least blow air over the HS would do depends on the dimensions of the current Fan what you can really get you can get 40,60mm fans that are thing not so sure about 80,100,120mm fans although I have seen what happens when the fan fails and NO-one notices, "we've no pictures so I rebooted it" erm no pictures cos the GPU has cooked and you've fried it totally by leaving it on..
I'm running a passive cooled HD 4650 with a fan under it - so you might get away with that...
Problem is it's not the OE cooling setup, it's a slightly different setup dreamed up by the manufacturer. I looked at it, and it looks like replacing just the fan would require much open-heart surgery and then maybe a custom part ta boot. I'll tear it apart to find out anyways since I can't exactly break it any more by doing so. I've had more than my share of GPUs with 120mm case fans zip tied onto them when the stocker died, but this one looks like it'd be a lot of effort to pull that off hehe.
Maybe I could get a 60 to 80mm adapter, screw it onto the face of the shroud, and then put an 80mm fan on it. Hmm. :D Maybe make it a 3 slot card lol.
Edit:
Here's the one I wanted: http://www.akasa.com.tw/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&no=181&type=Cooling%20solutions&type_sub=VGA%20Cooler&model=AK-VC03-BLUV

They were ~$30 when I last looked (figuring on one for my 4870 since these are both quieter and more effective). Now, only one place selling them, and $50. :(

For $30, I think this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835110015) is the best I can find. You would know better than I if you can trust it, but that's what I found...

That one isn't compatible, and doesn't have enough cooling capacity unfortunately.

I saw this place, but they're not in the USA, and their shipping gives 2 choices... free, or $116. Somehow I think if I actually ordered it they would cancel my order once they realized their "free" shipping is going to cost them more than the product. I've also found most places won't ship it overseas, I tried Amazon and some of their partners and all decline it. :(

They are the one I'm talking about. $30. + $12 shipping for a 1.5 lb item. They're the only official vendor still selling it (in the U.S.). :(

OK, roger that. I broke a single blade off my original 4850 awhile back so I have been keeping an eye on that cooler. But considering the total price for it I think I will saving up for the Scythe SCVSG-2000 VGA Cooler (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185159&Tpk=scythe%20vga%20cooler) which Newegg is selling for $44.99 (+3.99 S&H).
That's more then $30 F$. :p
If it came down to spending that much I was thinking something more like this:

On sale too. $55 on Newegg, $29.99 via the link.
Might just grab one. Was just hoping to avoid exhausting into the case. My CPU temps wobble already based on GPU temps. :(

I did look at that unit. Reviews say it works well. My problem is clearance, as in not enough. The Scythe has the lowest profile of the ones I know. It will give me marginally better than 3/8 of an inch to the bottom of the HDD section of my XPS case :( but that is better than anything else. The spacing between the other 4850s is not enough even for the Scythe unit.
Thankfully I have lots of room, as both systems are only running 1 card. Adding a second (since I now have the 5870 in one) can be done several slots away, and the 4890 can go on the bottom slot.
I went ahead and ordered that Arctic cooler. I can hear the 4870 fan making unhappy noises, so I'm going to try to stay ahead of it and get the 4890 back online to take its place. Probably just retire the 4870 then, won't be worth another ~$40 to get a fan for it too.
Oh, and since the 4890 is going in the other system I'm not sure why I care about case temps. That system runs cool as can be, it's my QX9750 that runs hot as bleep. Really need to get one of those sealed water kits for it, so I can quiet it down. I dropped down to a normal fan (~90 cfm from my ~140 cfm monster) and temps are hovering around 70C now with it under 70F in the house. I don't think it's enough fan for summer (I still keep temps around 73-74F but 70C is the max I want my CPU sitting at). It's very nice having it be quiet though.
Another reason I want to put a fan on the other GPU. This new 5870 is amazing. 900 Mhz core (small overclock), 1300 Mhz memory (small overclock), at 99% load it's running at no more than 60C and never more than 50% fan. At 50% it's not audible over the rest of the system. Compared to to the howling fans (which have to be 80%+ to keep heat below 80C) on the 4870 and 4890, it might as well be silent. Now that the 4870 is back online, I kinda miss the quiet lol. Oh, and I had to underclock the 4870 to bring its temps back down below 80C. Very unhappy fan.
PS: This is the card I got, $189.99 shipped, $20 MIR. I was looking at the new "bargain" GPUs at $140-150, like the HD6790, and for $20 more this thing rips them apart. But, very short deal, it jumped $80 the next day and now it's out of stock.

Sweet deal on that 5870. To recoup the cost of the Arctic fan unit, you could always sell the 4890 "As Is" on eBay. Or maybe make a deal with someone from the team (and I don't mean me :P ).
Anyhow, congrats on the new card. And don't forget the pics of the Arctic unit installed....
New cooler is on, and the HD4890 is alive again!
Cooler is very nice. Running at max speed since the fan header wasn't directly compatible and I wasn't feeling brave enough to yank the fitting off and try it directly.
It's currently running Collatz on a 75 mhz overclock hovering around 48C and quieter than the case fans. Win! Will have to push up the overclock more tomorrow hehe.

Congrats. I like the cooler temps with LESS noise thing \m/

I must have been really tired when I posted that because it makes absolutely no sense. :-/ :-/ :-/ Why the need to recoup costs on a cooler you wouldn't need to buy if the card was sold......... Somebody plz knock me upside my head.

That is awesome, JerWA! More power to you. More credits to the TEAM. I love the win win. :D
I'm just happy/surprised the card survived the cooking it got. I don't know when during the night it failed, but I know that when I woke up it was at 116C. Most of the thermal interface goo had baked into this hard stuff that brushed off like dust. I wiped the GPU itself once with a towel and it was shiny like a mirror.
I figured if it was dead I'd just put the cooler on the 4870. Instead now I have a 4870 I have to figure out what to do with hehe.
That is so sweet! I'm stoked it worked for you then, I had no idea it got run through the wringer like that! I thought the max these things could survive was just over 100 C. :D

My 580 came with the 3 fan version and it is so cool. Mid 40's under load, unless I over clock then it's the mid 50's.
There are a couple of problems though. The card takes 3 slots cause of the fans. I had to RMA the card after two weeks, cause one of the fan stopped spinning.
Dan
Well, something weird happened with the driver and it started taking about 10x as long to do a Collatz WU. No clue why, it was fine, then it wasn't, no changes on my side except normal OS patches. Also puked all the MilkyWay work it downloaded, which was reporting a CAL setup error.
Anywho, updated BOINC and the AMD driver. Looks like about 40 minutes for a long WU, as opposed to the 7 1/2 hours they were taking due to whatever was messed up.
Oh, also at a 975 MHz shader, 1010 MHz memory clock now. Shader is hovering 48-50C, Memory at 58-60C while running Collatz. This new cooler kicks butt.
Was wondering why Collatz/MW points were down!
