It's that time again, the BOINC Pentathlon is just a few weeks away. For the ninth time, SETI.Germany invites the passionate crunchers from all over the world to compete in this team competition from 05 May to 19 May in five disciplines at five projects.
The teams may sign up and vote for their favorite projects from a pre-selection using this registration form (https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/anmeldung.php) until 27 April. Late registration until 02 May is possible, but without the opportunity to vote for projects.
For more information about the BOINC Pentathlon, please visit the Pentathlon pages (https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/), where you can also find the full rules (https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/15_en_Rules.html) and the answers to frequently asked questions (https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/45_en_FAQ.html).
It will be exciting again (https://youtu.be/O_mc7jxpKrQ) at the BOINC Pentathlon!

**Please forgive my attempt at translating this to English. I hope it's not too bad :/ If so, blame Google or something :D
It's not so easy to find a beginning every year for the Daily Bulletin on the BOINC Pentathlon. One of the first exercises is to search for the meaning of the number that defines this pentathlon. This year, ladies and gentlemen, it's nine. For the ninth time, the ultimate competition takes place in the Boinc world.
The number 9 is the smallest odd composite number and the smallest odd composite number which is not a Fermat pseudo prime number. Alright? Well, if that's too mathematical, take a look at the natural sciences. Yes, there were 9 planets and maybe there will be 10 next year; all a question of definition. In China, the 9 is assigned to the dragon. Is this perhaps an indication of what we are facing this year? But the dragon will not have it easy, because the 9-headed hydra from Greek mythology might have something against it.
As always, the challenge is the same for all teams.
The teams expect 5 disciplines: marathon, swimming, sprint, cross-country and the city run. As the marathon progresses across the distance, the teams in the other disciplines have to face tough matches for 3-7 days. New this year: the announcement period for some disciplines has been shortened. This means having to act even faster for the teams, but also more tactical opportunities for the brave. You will have to look for who wrongly distributes his resources. If you do it right, you can make legendary triumphs.
After a clear victory last year, SETI.USA faces the challenge of defending the title. The expectation is certainly not only high among the Americans. Only Planet3DNow and SETI.Germany will do anything to steal the beef from the burger. The big unknown is the power of Team China. Can the Chinese play a role in the fight for total gold? Do you already have the strength for the victory? And which other team can cause a stir in the overall ranking this year? L'Alliance Francophone, the Czech National Team, Overclock.net, BOINC@Poland or ????
The past year has already shown the trend. It's getting more and more exciting in the disciplines. More and more teams have realistic chances on precious metal. It is therefore not very brave of me to say, "Here is the mail, go out." The days are over of SUSA, SG or P3D determining everything with the medals distributed among themselves. By clever tactics, surprises are always possible, no, even guaranteed. Overclock.net's individual victory in cross country last year and Team China's silver medal in the sprint are warning examples.
Rarely has the situation been as unclear as this year. Increased crunching costs have been added to many teams. Some were just about to hoist the white flag and capitulate. Also, for organizers, it will not be as easy to find suitable projects, but real crunchers do not give up that easily. It's time to dust off the hardware, secure the sockets, stock up a large supply of caffeine and best to send the woman to the salon or the man in the pub.
The heroic battle for credits in the service of science awakens weary spirits. Anyone whose fingers do not tingle in the face of the challenge is already dead. Do you want to feel life? Let's go.
Until then, one thing is certain:
It's going to be exciting at the Boinc Pentathlon.

Look like we jumped into the early lead, but P3D is still dropping bunkers into a clear second place.
[H] looks like they are doing the same, but they are fading in the overall.......
Too soon to tell though.
OCN was third in Swimming but TC's bunkers passed them, but they are putting out twice what TC is at this point.
Right now,4:00am PST, we are solidly in first place by at least 2x in both.

Day 1 - 05 May 2018
Like the thirsty in the desert, the hungry in front of the buffet or Sebastian Vettel in the starting line-up, all experience the same in that moment before the start. At last, the time has come. However, in an instant, intense concentration is required but also intense enjoyment second by second.
At last the time has come, the 9th BOINC Pentathlon has started. The organisers, just to be cruel, didn’t allow the teams any warm up period. Both disciplines, Marathon and Swimming which will drain our crunchers’ energy the most, are featuring at the start of the programme. That requires early clever resource management.
Last year, Planet 3DNow! (P3D) won at Swimming ahead of Gridcoin and SETI.USA (SUSA). SUSA won the Marathon ahead of P3D and Gridcoin. Let’s wait and see if P3D and SUSA will be able to repeat their successes from the previous year.
Swimming – Universe@Home
As is usual, the first few hours are shaped by bunker explosions which generate large displacements of earth. Punctually, right at the start, SUSA torched their whole arsenal and thus placed themselves at the very top. The green water rats from P3D are currently trying to not only match the pace but are succeeding in catching up.
Behind them, Team China are holding on to #3, however, only just ahead of Overclock.net (OCN) at #4. [H]ard|OCP have just pushed up to #5 past BOINC.Italy (#6) and Chinese Dream (#7). Two teams from China at the Pentathlon in the Top10? I don’t believe we’ve seen that before. However, currently creeping up are CNT (#8), returnees BOINC@Poland (#9), RKN (#10) and SG (#11) with a mind to change all that. Rank 11 for SG is already a near catastrophe which calls for a fast intake of antihistamines to ward off allergy.to water
With #12, TAAT might not altogether be dissatisfied in the end, but it’s far too early for such sentiments. Also afraid of water is the rooster of L'Alliance Francophone (AF) who can’t be satisfied with #13. At #14, BOINC@AUSTRALIA started well off the blocks whilst Meisterkuehler.de (MK) at #15 continue to sit back. Following behind by a slim margin are USA (#16), Crunching@EVGA (#17), Ukraine (#18) and BOINCstats at #19.
Rank 20 is currently contested by LITOMYSL and SETIKAH@KOREA (SETIKAH). Nevertheless, just behind, we find tight duels where we can’t make anything out with the naked eye to confirm who has managed to get the tip of their finger in front. At #22, UK BOINC Team and AMD Users are tousling and at #24 there is a fight between Das Kartell and Rookie LTT Forums. Whilst BOINC@Pfalz (#26) are still looking undecided, the duel for #27 betweenTeam2ch and BOINC@MIXI is in full flight. The last team in the water are U.S. Army at #29 which doesn’t surprise us at all since it’s not the Navy.
Marathon - NumberFields@home
The Marathon leads the teams to NumberFields@home, a premiere for the project and thus also for our teams. Just as they did at Swimming, SUSA moved like their house was on fire and immediately placed themselves at the top of the field. It looks like their tactic is to gain as much distance as possible and then to try and manage that. It seemed to work last year but what about this year?
[H]ard|OCP (#3) just allowed P3D (#2) to overtake them but despite that, both teams appear to gain ground towards the front of the field Team China are currently unable to keep up with the tempo of the top trio but it’s still enough to keep SG (#5) behind them. Though the German sleepy heads have managed to push past OCN (#6), TAAT (#7) and AF (#8) in the last few hours, it doesn’t yet look convincing what the blue-yellows are delivering today.
CNT (#9) have just catapulted past Chinese Dream (#10) and will now try and close the gap towards the top. USA (#11) and RKN (#12) are following behind. Both have managed to separate a little from Crunching@EVGA (#13) and BOINC.Italy (#14). MK, #15 need to thaw out as don’t look satisfactory at the moment. Ukraine (#16) have already got MK in their sights but must beware not to get caught out by AMD Users (#17).
Das Kartell at #18 are making good progress, followed by BOINCstats (#19), UK BOINC Team (#20), BOINC@MIXI (#21) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA at #22. At the end of the field are a bunch who will have to decide to either head towards the top or treat this as a nice excursion. Team2ch (#23) have just pushed past BOINC@Pfalz (#24) by a whisker. Crystal Dream (#25) and BOINC@Poland (#26) follow behind. The Poles seem to concentrate on Swimming, let’s wait and see how that’ll work out for them. LITOMYSL (#27), SETIKAH@KOREA (#28) and LTT Forums (#29) are currently bringing up the rear on the Marathon track.
Overall
It’s to be expected that the overall standings aren’t very meaningful after only 11 hours but It’s still fun to take a look. SUSA have taken their place at the top followed by P3D. Currently in the Bronze position are Team China who are thus confirming their intention for this year. [H]ard|OCP (#4) and OCN (#5) are both finding themselves behind by just a small margin. Both are beginning to struggle to keep their eye on the front runners and pushing up from behind are SG (#6) who can’t really be happy with their current performance.
Both moving along at #7 are Chinese Dream and CNT, only just ahead of TAAT (#9) and BOINC.Italy (#10). In addition, AF at #11 will not be able to take a satisfied bite out of the baguette and it’s also best not to tangle with RKN (#12). Currently on the move in no-man’s-land are USA (#13) but we all know that that could quickly change.
There might be a quick end to the flirt at #14 between Crunching@EVGA and MK with an interruption by BOINC@Poland (#16) or Ukraine (#17). Behind follow BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#18), BOINCstats (#19), AMD Users (#20), Das Kartell (#21) and UK BOINC Team (#22). At the bottom of the field are currently LITOMYSL (#23), BOINC@MIXI (#24), SETIKAH (also #24), Team2ch (#26), BOINC@Pfalz (#27), LTT Forums (#28), Crystal Dream (#29) and U.S. Army at #30.
One thing is currently clear and that is that nothing is clear.
And once again we are drilled with questions:
- When will SG wake up from its lethargy?
- Are the Chinese stirring up the Pentathlon this year?
- Can SUSA still be stopped?
Questions upon questions. Nothing is sure, except for one thing: It remains exciting at the Boinc-Pentathlon.

Day 2 - 06 May 2018
On the second day, after the gun smoke has cleared, the individual power of each team is coming to the fore. It is now apparent which tempo the teams feel they can maintain over the distance, ensuring the heads in their strategy departments are smouldering.
Marathon
SUSA’s margin grows and grows and grows and grows and grows and P3D must now decide if an attempt at Gold is still worthwhile or better to try and secure #2. However, my dear readers, the marathon is long and arduous and it’s far too early for preliminary decisions. Thus, SG have slowly but steadily crunched their way to #3 and will employ all available means to rough up the green planet.
The same goes for Team China (#5). The Chinese have made up a lot of ground so that OCP should slowly be getting concerned about keeping #4. Behind them, TAAT are holding steady at #6 although under pressure from OCN (#7). The gap behind is quite considerable. AF at #8 might have motivation problems but a glance to the rear should quickly fix that. CNT (#9), RKN (#10) and MK (#11) have decided not to make it easy for the Francophones. Especially Meisterkühler have been running their soles red hot In the last few hours.
As the Marathon will be our steady companion in the next few days, let’s take a quick look at Swimming. There’s not a dry patch to be seen which doesn’t mean that the heat hasn’t been turned up.
Swimming
Here too, SUSA are ahead of P3D. However, the margin isn’t quite as large as at the Marathon. The little green men need to increase power or face swallowing SUSA’s wastewater. A haze over the water is obscuring the battle for #3. No, it’s not Fog – the fog of doom. The tension has reached boiling point: OCP are valiantly holding on to #3 but Team China (#4), OCN (#5) as well as SG (#6) are following in their wake. Here, no decision has yet been made, hopefully not too much water will evaporate as that would leave them swimming on dry land.
Will RKN (#7) be able to enter the fray? Going by my experience I rather doubt it but in the Pentathlon, nothing is impossible. The Germans are at least able to keep their distance to BOINC@Poland (#8) which the Poles are failing to do with TAAT (#9) and CNT (#10). It’s red alert east of the river Oder.
AF (#11) are not keeping up the pace but are also not put under enough pressure by BOINC.Italy (#12), Chinese Dream (#13), MK (#14) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15). USA at #16 are keeping Crunching@EVGA (#17) at bay whereby there’s hardly any pressure from Ukraine (#18), BOINCstats (#19) and LITOMYSL (#20). The Czechs have got LTT Forums (#21) and Das Kartell (#22) breathing down their neck. It’s not yet clear to what extend SETIKAH (#23) and AMD Users (#24) will be able to muscle in. However, we shouldn’t dismiss that possibility.
Overall
There are some noticeable changes in the overall standings. Even though SUSA and P3D are leading the field, there are quite a few skirmishes behind them. OCP are holding on to #3 and with a glance in their rearview mirror can’t miss the angry looking boys and girls from SG who are slowly making up ground.
Team China (#5) have pushed past OCN (#6) and will now try and light the fire under the German eagle’s bottom. Whilst TAAT hold on to #7, RKN (#8) and CNT (#9) are involved in a little skirmish in which AF (also at #9) decided to meddle. MK were able to improve their rank to #11 and have thereby overtaken Chinese Dream (#12) and BOINC.Italy (#13) and at the same time kept USA (#14) at a distance.
Crunching@EVGA (#15) are continuing to buzz about in Neverland and able to enjoy the show in front and behind. BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) are currently engaged in a duel with BOINC@Poland (#17), one point difference is hardly anything at all. Are Ukraine (#18) willing and able to step in? At the moment there doesn’t appear to be much danger to the rear as AMD Users (#19) and the duo of Das Kartell and BOINCstats at #20, LITOMYSL (#22) and UK BOINC Team (#23) are already trailing quite a bit behind.
BOINC@MIXI (#24) are trying to keep LTT Forums (#25) off their back and will be keeping a watchful eye out for 2ch (#26). At the end of the field, BOINC@Pfalz (#27), Crystal Dream (also at #27), USArmy (#28) and BOINC Confederation (#29) have all managed to collect some points.
And where do we go from here? Questions over questions:
- At Swimming, will Team China take over #3?
- At the Marathon, can P3D put SUSA under pressure?
- And when will AF put aside their cheese and wine and start crunching?
It remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 3 - 07 May 2018
The third day of the competition is under way with one or two warning lights flashing in the last few hours. Everybody is counting, calculating and speculating diligently. How best to distribute the computing power? Await the next discipline or hope for a chance in either Marathon or Swimming? The decisions now taken will be captured in the result on 19 May 18.
Marathon
The logic is in the nature of the long distance race like the Marathon which makes sudden twists and turns rarer the longer the race endures. This is being demonstrated right at this moment but with the announcement of further projects the situation will get really interesting. That’s when resources will be reallocated und thus open up new chances for the brave amongst the competitors. SUSA continue to lead the field and attempt to control their margin. P3D are keeping at Silver and have made up some ground. That’s when there could be danger from [H] (#3). They’ve caught up in the last few hours and are actually the fastest in the field.
It’s not only SG (#4) who will hope that this is only a momentary flicker. Team China (#5) too have surely not written off a medal just yet. The teams following behind will most likely not feature when the medals are being distributed but that’s far from sure. TAAT (#6) are currently weakening which allows OCN (#7) and AF (#8) constant nibbles at the margin. CNT can be found at only #9 but the Czechs have shown in the past that they are game for surprise attacks.
MK have got their work cut out to retain Rank 10 as RKN (#11), USA (#12) and Chinese Dreams (#13) are catching up with mighty dynamic strides. Crunching@EVGA (#14) are apparently not interested and prefer to play with BOINC.Italy (#15). AMD Users appear to have taken a look and decided to join them as they are visibly catching up. Ukraine can still be found at #17 but BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#18) have made up ground. The next few hours will show if they’ve got the stamina. Das Kartell had to let the Australians pass and are currently holding on to #19.
The Top20 is completed by UK BOINC Team, clearly ahead of MIXI (#21), LITOMYSL (#22), BOINCstats (#23), 2ch (#24) and Crystal Dream (#25). An unexpected turn of events shows the U.S. Army at #26 currently running out of steam. Or can we expect a covert attack? LTT Forums (#27) must hope that that’s not going to happen as they’ve slowly managed to get into attack position. BOINC@Pfalz, BOINC@Poland, SETIKAH and BOINC Confederation are closing the field from #28 - #31.
Swimming
A powerful wave raged through the water in the past few hours. SUSA (#1) and P3D (#2) barely noticed the effect but the teams behind were forced to swallow quite a bit of water. The cause of all this must be due to a Gallic magic potion. This catapulted AF to #3 which hit [H] (#4), Team China (#5) and SG (#6) between the eyes. We’ve now got to wait and see if AF can maintain enough supplies or if all vats have been emptied.
OCN can now be found at #7, still in the wake of SG. Can they hold position? At least their advantage over RKN (#8) and BOINC@Poland (#9) is clearly visible. The duo are close but the Poles are just beginning to build momentum. A glance at the Overall Standings also shows that they are apparently putting all their bets on Swimming. CNT and TAAT are having a bit of a tiff over #10 and don’t need to hurry as AUSTRALIA (#12) and Italy (#13) are some distance away. The Australians have just put on a quick burst of speed and thus not only overtaken the Italians but also Chinese Dream (#14) and MK (#15).
The next changes are onwards from #20. LTT Forums have crunched to that rank and in so doing, kicked LITOMYSL out of the Top20. Behind, SETIKAH have pushed up to #22, past Das Kartell. In the meantime, 2ch continue to try and separate from UK BOINC Team to secure #25.
Overall
There’s currently no change on the podium. SUSA ahead of P3D and [H]. Even though all is calm and placid here, the broth continues to boil in the ranks behind and if not careful could burn the fingers of the first three.
With their surprise torpedo launch in Swimming, AF advanced to #4 and did not just catch SG (#5) napping. Team China (#6) continue to keep pace with both and hope to benefit from the slipstream. Further on, OCN (#7) are giving it everything not to be left behind but that won’t be easy. TAAT appear secure at #8 but the duel between RKN and CNT at #9 is not only exciting but could result in mobilising hidden resources.
The best team outside of the Top10 are MK at #11. However, the temperature is slowly rising in the Cool team as Chinese Dream (#12) are creeping up. BOINC.Italy (#13) are already victims of the small dragon who doesn’t yet appear to have satisfied its hunger. On the other hand, the Italians must share #13 with USA and it won’t take long to decide who has the upper hand. BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15) succeeded in separating from Crunching@EVGA (#16); let’s wait and see when both are once again drawn to each other.
BOINC@Poland at #17 must step up a notch if they are to improve their ranking. The Poles are demonstrating an exciting tactic by investing all in Swimming at the moment. Neighbours from Ukraine (#18) are moving along without haste but not improving their standing. Behind them we find AMD Users at #19. BOINCstats and Das Kartell continue to fight over #20. Whilst LITOMYSL (#22) are trying everything to enable a jump into the Top20, UK BOINC Team (#23) and LTT Forums (#24) will find that a bit more difficult. At #25 we currently see BOINC@MIXI followed by 2ch (#26), SETIKAH (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), U.S. Army and BOINC@Pfalz (#29) as well as BOINC Confederation (#30).
You will already have asked yourselves:
- Can AF rake in precious metal once again?
- Are [H]ard|OCP going to retaliate at Swimming?
- When will SG attack at the Marathon?
You see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 4 - 08 May 2018
Whilst starting into the fourth day of the contest, our teams received glad tidings that the Sprint would commence in less than 3 days. The short notice period doesn’t give the teams much time to think and the conditions at the project Rosetta will contribute to allowing for fascinating tactical variations. It’s not possible to determine how the announcement of the 3rd discipline will impact on the races already underway. At least, not yet.
Swimming
P3D are trying to use the water to convert Silver into Gold. They could catch up on their margin to SUSA at the top could but it will be demanding. On the other hand, the fight for Bronze is in full swing. The last place on the podium is being defended rather viciously and noisily by the snappy beak of AF’s rooster. China (#4), [H] (#5) and SG (#6) are showing considerable respect and keep well away. SG are slowly managing to reduce the distance to [H] but must do more if they are aiming for precious metal.
Not unsurprisingly, OCN have had to break it off which isn’t something to be ashamed of. They have at least managed to distance themselves further from their pursuers. They are being led by CNT (#8), RKN (#9) and BOINC@Poland (#10). TAAT (#11) are fighting tooth and nail to reduce the distance to the Poles but they are not quite succeeding in closing the gap. BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12) and BOINC.Italy (#13) have managed to hold on to their ranks. Nevertheless, Meisterkühler (#14) put pressure on the Italians once they had pushed Chinese Dream down to #15.
A considerable interim spurt has catapulted Crunching@EVGA to #16 with the result that USA now find themselves at #17. However, the margin is still very small so that a counterattack could be successful at any time. Only at #22 do we then notice a change in the positions. AMD Users have swum past SETIKAH (#23) and Das Kartell (#24) to #22. BOINC@MIXI (#26) have shown that a good interim spurt brings results by relegating UK BOINC Team to #27.
Marathon
Now this race has moved to the long edge, it has become a lot quieter. The positions have been taken and the time has come to try and estimate what is still possible and how large the risk is going to be when resources need to be redeployed. Using the correct strategy here will be the cause of many more position changes. SUSA are succeeding well in defending their position at the top. It won’t be easy for the green hunter of P3D (#2) to bring the American eagle out of the sky. The fight for Bronze is contested once again by [H] (#3), SG (#4) and Team China (#5). The Teutones are currently weakening, allowing the Chinese to catch up strongly.
The fight for #5 is also a three-way skirmish. TAAT are currently holding the best cards in this fight but OCN (#6) and especially CNT (#7) are catching up. AF have become the victim of the breach by the Czechs. Only at #9 and not looking as if there is any more in it. A lot of resources are tied up at Swimming, the margin already quite noticeable and now MK (#10) are closing in.
They’ve taken notice of each other in the ranks behind but there’s not much evidence of an attack. It’s at the other end of the field where we find the action. 2ch have crunched themselves to rank 22, straight past LITOMYSL (#23) and BOINCstats (#24).
Unimpressed, Crystal Dream seem to drift along in a dream at #25. However, it would be better not to dream too much as the margin to LTT Forums (#26) isn’t quite so substantial. The same applies to U.S. Army (#27) and SETIKAH (#28). BOINC@Pfalz (#29), BOINC@Poland (#30) and BOINC Confederation (#31) are completing the picture.
Overall
The contests for Bronze especially are having a massive impact on the Overall Standings. The rankings are constantly on the move which isn’t going to change any time soon. But let’s first look at what hasn’t changed: SUSA ahead of P3D. Even [H] are able to hang on to Bronze but behind, Team China (#4) succeeded in overtaking the colourful rooster of AF (#5) and are giving it their all to close the gap to the top. We discover SG (#6) just one point behind AF and three points behind TC. Not really a good position for this traditional team in blue-yellow colours but not all is lost yet.
OCN retain #7 but will have noticed that CNT (#8) have picked up speed and set the course. TAAT (#9) have had to let the Czechs pass and will now be casting an eye over RKN (#10) and MK (#11). Rank 12 has attracted altogether 5 Teams so that the sequence can be completely different with every hour. Currently both on the same points are BOINC.Italy and Chinese Dream at #12, followed by USA (#14) and two further teams on equal points: Teams BOINC@AUSTRALIA and Crunching@EVGA at #15.
Ukraine (#17) and BOINC@Poland (#18) are still keeping each other busy and are not paying any attention to AMD Users (#19). Das Kartell and BOINCstats are sharing #20 at the moment and profit from a weak phase by LITOMYSL (#22). LTT Forums (#23) have gained a little ground but it remains to be seen if that will be enough to make further progress. Especially UK BOINC Team (#24) and BOINC@MIXI (#25) should not be disregarded. The same goes for 2ch who at #26 aren’t persuading us that they are fulfilling their potential. The field is rounded off by SETIKAH@KOREA (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), U.S. Army & BOINC@Pfalz (#29) and BOINC Confederation (#31).
Three-way contests over three-way contests. And of course 3 questions:
- Will CNT advance further in the Overall Standings?
- Will SG manage to cut loose from their undeserving Rank 6?
- How good are the sharpshooters of P3D?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 5 - 09 May 2018
With a good 36h to go before the start of the Sprint, the uninitiated might believe that an expectant calm has befallen the Pentathlon. But that’s far from reality. There’s frenzied action at both Swimming and the Marathon. At Swimming, the teams are moving into position for the end spurt and are already mentally practising their attack moves. It wouldn’t be the first time that the outcome was thus played out.
Marathon
Step by step is how the Marathon advances. Even though the margins seem large, we’ve not yet covered half the distance. However, it’ll be a mammoth task to snatch Gold away from the boys and girls of SUSA which only P3D could set out to achieve. It remains to be seen if they will rise to the challenge or place their bets on other disciplines. The Americans are maintaining their lead and I won’t need to consult my crystal ball to know that they are busily filling their bunkers for the Sprint. Mind you, that might also present a new chance.
It’s quite impressive to see how [H] manage to hold on to rank 3. The speed of the Green Planet is almost keeping pace and they’re thus leaving their astonished rivals behind. The Chinese Dragon has now pushed up to #4 ahead of TC. They passed SG (#5) who now need to ask themselves: what’s still feasible?
Whilst TAAT continue to maintain a great #6, CNT (#8) are starting to breathe down the neck of Team OCN (#7). There’s now more certainty of a forthcoming change of places. AF (#9) and MK (#10) complete the Top10. AMD Users who zoomed past three teams can now be found at #13. Even though Crunching@EVGA (#14) were able to hold position, BOINC.Italy (#15) are steadily moving closer. There’s evidence of a drama at #16. AMD Users’ profit became Chinese Dream’s deficit. Has the dream of a good ranking already evaporated? At the current tempo they’ve got to be afraid of BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) and Ukraine (#18) who continue to spur each other on.
Even the tussle between UK BOINC Team and Das Kartell over #19 has not yet been decided. Behind them, slowly getting into their stride, are 2ch who have pushed to #21 past LITOMYSL (#22) and BOINC@MIXI (#23). The change of position at #27 had already been forecast as U.S. Army put SETIKAH in their place. Now the Koreans have to look out as BOINC@Poland (#29) have nearly caught up and are set to overtake.
Swimming
For the moment, SUSA continue to lead the field. You’ll wonder why I am cautious. Isn’t the advantage ample? That is true, at least that’s what it used to be. P3D (#2) have made a massive leap in the last few hours and have more than halved the deficit. That promises an exciting final tomorrow. The outcome at Bronze will most likely be decided by Rooster and Dragon. Will the Rooster peck out the Dragon’s eyes or will there be grilled Rooster? We will see. AF are currently at #3 and TC (#4) are not coming any closer at the moment.
Duel or three-way fight? That’s the question at #5. [H] continue to contest their position valiantly ahead of SG (#6) but the Germans treasure every point and will not give up. OCN (#7) have lost the connection but aren’t so far behind that they can’t come back. On the other hand, BOINC@Poland have moved up to #8 and are thus holding the best cards in this four-way fight for one of the places in the Top10. Whilst RKN hold on to #9, CNT (#11) are clearly losing ground and had to let TAAT (#10) overtake them.
BOINC@AUSTRALIA continue securely at #12 as neither MK (#13) nor BOINC.Italy (#14) can match the Australian’s pace. There’s one disaster after another for Chinese Dream (#16). They’ve already collapsed at the Marathon and must now let Crunching@EVGA (#15) overtake them. And there’s more danger behind as USA (#17) are fast approaching. LTT Forums (#18) continue to forge ahead. That might almost be the end of the line as the gap to the front is already considerably large and not much time remaining.
You couldn’t fit a piece of paper between Ukraine (#19) and BOINCstats (#20) at the moment and even LITOMYSL (#21) aren’t too far away and could still attack. More about Swimming tomorrow at the dawn of the remaining few hours.
Overall
SUSA ahead of P3D ahead of [H] ahead of TC ahead of AF is currently the accustomed ranking lineup. SG at #6 have lost a bit of ground and must also brace themselves slowly for OCN (#7). A bad day at Swimming led to TAAT (#8) also losing points but as CNT (#9) behind them are also weakening, nothing happened. What brings misery to one, brings joy to another. RKN (#10), MK (#11), BOINC@AUSTRALIA and USA (#12) have managed to advance a little and don’t want to write off the Top10.
Crunching@EVGA (#14), BOINC.Italy (#14) and Chinese Dream (#16) will all be licking their wounds. This Trio managed to lose points and slide backwards. That could be the chance for BOINC@Poland (#17) and AMD Users (#18). Both have been busily collecting points and are thus moving in closer to the unhappy trio. There won’t be time to express their commiserations. Rank 19 has been taken by Ukraine.
LTT Forums are swimming at #20, past Das Kartell (#21) and LITOMYSL (#22). BOINCstats (#23) remain in fighting distance. When can we expect an attack? Though no improvement in ranks, points were claimed by UK BOINC Team (#24) and 2ch (#25) who were thus able to move away from BOINC@MIXI (#26). Then follow SETIKAH@KOREA (#27), Crystal Dream (#28) and U.S. Army (#29). The Army have to share their rank with BOINC Confederation who succeeded in pushing BOINC@Pfalz to the back.
And once again no answers, just more questions:
- Are P3D reaching out for Gold at Swimming?
- Are SUSA squandering their chances at the Marathon?
- Can [H] hold on to Bronze in the Overall Standings?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 6 - 10 May 2018
Rookies are beginning to discover what makes the Pentathlon so challenging. Two disciplines are currently active and tomorrow the teams must not only get out of the start blocks at the Sprint as quickly as possible but also proceed with the Finale at Swimming. Three disciplines on the same day, that will be a challenge to the scribes. In addition, the tacticians in the teams will have noticed that the City Run and the Cross-Country have been announced. There’s a lot to think about. But for now, the first decision of this year’s Pentathlon is approaching.
Swimming
In the last few days, P3D have managed to move ever closer to SUSA, once, for 1h, even the Germans moved past. But then the empire struck back. SUSA are currently leading in front of P3D. This clarifies that the first decision of the Pentathlon will be decided on the finish line. Both teams are not allowing the other any leeway at all.
The battle over Bronze continues to be fought intensively by Dragon and Rooster. Team China are currently at #3 and managed to really press AF (#4). Will the singed Francophones retaliate? Behind, SG managed to pass [H] onto #5. However, the margin doesn’t yet deserve to be described as such. Here too, the next 33h will remain exciting.
OCN at #7 can feel quite secure. Only an insane final sprint would allow BOINC@Poland (#8), RKN (#9), TAAT (#10) or CNT (#11) to pass. But that should not yet be dismissed, my dear readers. Everything’s possible at the Pentathlon. The Czechs have thus always been game for such surprises.
It’s the same here as at the Marathon where BOINC@AUSTRALIA are happiest in no-man’s-land, #12 appears well fortified. MK (#13), BOINC.Italy (#14) and Crunching@EVGA (#15) aren’t out of reach but I’ve got my doubts. At the very least, Chinese Dream have found their pace in the water, have for now secured #16 and are keeping USA (#17) at a distance. On the other hand, the next team LTT Forums (#18) find themselves in mid-table obscurity.
BOINCstats (#19) were able to push past Ukraine (#20) and are trying to make more space. LITOMYSL (#21) and AMD Users (#22) aren’t too far behind. Both teams are still capable and surely have the determination to enter into the battle for the Top20. Rank 23 continues to be fought over by Das Kartell, SETIKAH (#24) and 2ch (#25). BOINC@MIXI have consolidated rank 26 ahead of BOINC Confederation (#27). There’s intense action between UK BOINC Team (#28) and Crystal Dream (#29) whereby the Brits are shortly going to have to concede a rank. The end of the field is made up of BOINC@Pfalz (#30), U.S. Army (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).
Marathon
Here, the situation has calmed down. Although SUSA’s advantage over P3D has shrunk, it’s not significant. Let’s call it controlled shrinkage. [H] continue to secure #3, TC (#4) and SG (#5) can only glance wistfully in their direction. In addition, the field behind has sorted itself out. TAAT (#6), OCN (#7), CNT (#8), AF (#9) and MK (#10) aren’t currently showing any ambition.
The exception is BOINC.Italy who break through the monotony. The Italians snatched #14 from Crunching@EVGA. Further along, the drama involving Chinese Dream continues. Rang 16 should soon be history because the Chinese have trouble staying on their feet. They are even moving along the track on all fours. On the other hand, BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) have smelled blood. Hungry, they descend on their victim like an Australian saltwater crocodile and thus even the pizza-filled Italians could find themselves on the menu.
There are three lots of musical chairs to be found. Whilst Das Kartell and UK BOINC Team are disagreeing over #19, LITOMYSL and BOINC@MIXI are quarrelling over 22. Also LTT Forums and Crystel Dream are figuring out a plan for #25.
Overall
There won’t most likely be any significant changes until after the start of the Sprint but even so, no sign of boredom here. SUSA lead ahead of P3D which, however, could change at any moment when the Green Planet succeed in making the Americans swallow water at Swimming We can now find TC at #3. They managed the jump onto the podium as a result of their improvement in Swimming and a slight weakening of [H] (#4).
That’s still too far away for SG (#5). There’s got to be a better show in the next disciplines. Another reason is that AF (#6) continue to move closer. There are no changes further along: OCN (#7), TAAT (#8), CNT (#9), RKN (#10) and MK (#11) are holding position.
In the group fighting over #12, BOINC.Italy have glided into top position, scarcely ahead of the teams on equal points from BOINC@AUSTRALIA and USA (#13) as well as Crunching@EVGA (#15) and Chinese Dream (#16) who are lying in wait. Even BOINC@Poland can still enter the fray if they want. AMD Users and Ukraine follow on at #18 and #19.
Das Kartell have managed to secure #20 and have thus relegated LTT Forums (#21) and BOINCstats (#22). LITOMYSL could potentially still intervene but it’s currently not clear if that’s something they want to do. 2ch and UK BOINC Team are sharing #24, clearly ahead of BOINC@MIXI (#26), SETIKAH (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), BOINC Confederation & USA (#29) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).
What has this day brought us?
- Are P3D playing with SUSA at Swimming?
- Are SUSA playing with P3D at Swimming?
- Are AF retaliating at Swimming?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 7 - 11 May 2018
What a day! Start and Finish all on the same day. And straight away, everything is well mixed up again. Due to the action at Swimming as well as at the Sprint and the resulting consequences in the Overall Standings, I’ll leave the Marathon to one side today as that’s moving along nice and quiet at the moment. As expected, the teams have naturally moved their focus elsewhere because in the next few hours the decision is expected at:
Swimming
Claiming victory in the end spurt? We are expecting a great Finale. The spectators have jumped up from their seats. Anybody not on their feet needs to seek medical attention. Just now, SUSA once again regained the lead after P3D (#2) had earlier managed to overtake the Americans. What power can both teams still unleash?
The fight over Bronze is no less exciting. The last time AF (#3) managed to stand on the podium in a discipline was in 2015 and they seem highly motivated. TC (#4) must lick their scales as they were unable to counter the angry attack of the last few hours und had to relinquish the Bronze rank. However, I’m certain that the fire breathing dragon from the Far East has not yet set off all its fireworks.
SG (#5) continue to put distance between [H] (#6) but the margin isn’t yet substantial enough to ward off a potential last minute bunker attack. We’ve just seen TAAT launch such an attack. They shot past OCN (#8) and CNT (#9) with a mighty push and thus claimed #7. If there’s enough juice in the tank, they could potentially still attack Rank 5! That almost put the spurt of the Czechs in the shade but not so fast. Here too the powerful interim spurt has led to considerable improvement.
Losers of the last few hours are BOINC@Poland (#10) und RKN (#11) which doesn’t mean that both are giving up. There’s no obvious danger behind. The margin is comfortable and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12) aren’t making a move to attack. Rank 13 seems to be the maximum that Meisterkühler could potentially reach. They still call this rank their own, but Crunching@EVGA (#14) have already begun to lay claim to it. Even BOINC.Italy (#15) are still a contender despite just having had to forfeit a place.
Chinese Dream (#16) and USA (#17) appear content with their rankings, also LTT Forums who are looking smart at #18. But behind, #19 is far from spoken for. Ukraine (#19), LTOMYSL (#20), BOINCstats (#21) and even AMD Users (#22) are all making a powerful play for it. Rank 23 has not yet been fortified by Das Kartell as SETIKAH (#24) keep coming to take a closer look. Advice to the two is not to let 2ch (#25) out of their sight.
BOINC@MIXI have good chances to bring in #26. On the other hand, BOINC Confederation (#27) have found themselves under immense pressure. Crystal Dream (#28) are powering forwards and have moved past UK BOINC Team (#29). BOINC@Pfalz (#30), U.S. Army (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32) appear content at the end of the field.
Sprint
It’s not much of a surprise to see SUSA (#1) be the first to get out of the start blocks. Behind, TC have settled at #2 but only just ahead of P3D (#3). SG got away much better than usual. Rank 4 is a good starting position to allow them to stay in the fight for the medals. TAAT (#5) are running along just a fraction behind the Germans and are currently able to keep OCN (#6), CNT (#7) and [H] (#8) behind them.
We are not surprised to see RKN at Rank 9, followed by BOINC.Italy who have had a great start. Swimming must be taking it out of AF as only #11 on the scoreboard for them. Behind, the margins are wafer-thin. For that reason we anticipate many place changes in the next few hours. Nevertheless, LTT Forums can currently be happy with #12 followed by Crunching@EVGA (#13), USA (#14), MK (#15), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) and UK BOINC Team (#17).
Further along, a (really) very small gap is opening up. SETIKAH (#18) are leading this part of the field followed by BOINC@Poland (#19), AMD Users (#20), 2ch (#21), BOINCstats (#22) and Chinese Dream (#23). Behind, the gaps are miniscule: BOINC Confederation (#24) only just ahead of Ukraine (#25). BOINC@MIXI (#26) and Crystal Dream (#27) are separated by only a cell.
As you can see, there’s still a lot of variation to come. Time’s short and margins are small. All ingredients for a fascinating Sprint are right here.
Overall
The Overall Standings have been modified with the start of the Sprint. Though SUSA continue to lead ahead of P3D and TC were able to consolidate #3, there’s been a lot of activity behind them. SG now lay claim to #4, a paper-thin margin away from [H]. TAAT have improved and moved up to #6, past AF (#7). OCN (#8) are gaining lots of points through the Sprint and are thus putting pressure on AF. CNT (#9), RKN (#10), MK (#11) and BOINC.Italy (#12) were able to hold on to their rankings for the time being. The Italians gained points and managed to break loose from Crunching@EVGA (#13), USA (#14) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15).
Even LTT Forums (#16) leapt forward on account of the Sprint and are thus able to profit from the current Sprint weakness of BOINC@Poland (#17), AMD Users (#18), Chinese Dream (#19) and Ukraine (#20). The good interim Sprint result also benefits UK BOINC Team (#21) who together with 2ch (#22) and SETIKAH (#23) sprinted further ahead. Boincstats are holding on to #24 which is a result of the short track weakness of Das Kartell (#25), LITOMYSL (#26) und BOINC@MIXI (#27). At #28 we find BOINC Confederation ahead of Crystal Dream (#29), U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).
Do you know what you need to do today? Find the answers!
- Who will win at Swimming?
- Will AF at long last be able to claim a medal?
- What can we still expect at the Sprint?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 8 - 12 May 2018
It has been accomplished. The first individual medals have been distributed. However, our heroes from Swimming won’t have much time for celebrations. Out of the pool and onwards it goes. Tomorrow, the terrain will be rocky with the start of the Cross Country and then, the day after tomorrow, we begin the City Run. Also, don’t forget, there’s the decision at the Sprint tomorrow.
Swimming
SUSA win Gold and did not get torched in the end. Although P3D tried indeed everything, they were unable to get the better of the concentrated might of the Americans and thus burst their dream of victory. However, the Green Planet can be content with Silver. Team China managed to secure #3 with an end spurt and thus Bronze and thereby triumphed over AF in the final phase. Congratulations to all medal winners.
AF have achieved their best individual ranking since 2015. It might be a huge disappointment to them but nevertheless, it constitutes a great achievement. They won’t really be satisfied at SG. Rank 5 was the result and at that with a considerable deficit which will have caused a few grumbling stomachs. [H] crossed the finish line at Rank 6 and at the same time raked in the best standing since 2015 and as a consequence kept TAAT behind them at #7. This, by the way, was the best individual ranking for TAAT since 2010.
OCN claimed #8 and in the end, were not caught unawares by CNT (#9). However, BOINC@Poland (#11) did get a surprise as they were caught out by RKN (#10). BOINC@AUSTRALIA crossed the finish line at #12 with an easy crawl followed by Meisterkühler at #13. We then witnessed a real photo finish behind. Only 667 credits decided in favour of BOINC.Italy who thus claimed #14 and managed to leave Crunching@EVGA (#15) behind them. Just as well that the race ended when it did.
At their premiere, Chinese Dream swam over the finish line at #16 and kept USA #17 and LTT Forums (#18) behind them. There was a right old skirmish in the water over #19. LITOMYSL managed to triumph in the end, followed by Ukraine (#20), BOINCstats (#21) and AMD Users (#22). Das Kartell secured #23 as a result of SETIKAH (#24) not having enough power for the end spurt.
2ch touched at #25 ahead of BOINC@MIXI (#26) and BOINC Confederation (#27). That team had to tremble at the end as Crystal Dream (#28) came threateningly close. However, the victim of Crystal Dream’s end spurt were UK BOINC Team (#29) where the British lacked power to turn the tide. Rank 30 went to BOINC@Pfalz ahead of U.S. Army (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).
Sprint
The pattern is the same, a quick start and then monitoring the advantage. That’s how SUSA operate this year and very successfully at that. P3D (#2) are toiling away but are unable to keep up. [H] (#3), SG (#4) and TC (#5) don’t grant any favours in their fight for Bronze and it remains completely open who might in the end come out on top.
At #6 there is a fight between CNT and TAAT (#7), here too, the standings could potentially change with the start of every new hour. Fantastic progress is made by USA at #8 who should remain vigilant as OCN (#9) are lying in wait. Behind, AF (#10) and RKN (#11) are keeping each other busy and forgetting to check on their surroundings. At first glance it’s not so serious as LTT Forums (#12), BOINC.Italy (#13) and Chinese Dream (#14) are also engaged with each other.
Just as they did at the Marathon, BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15) are slowly gaining ground at the Sprint and thus increase the distance to MK (#16). Behind, margins are really tight. Only around 75k separate Crunching@EVGA (#17), UK BOINC Team (#18), 2ch (#19), AMD Users (#20), BOINC@Poland (#21) and SETIKAH (#22). Changes here cannot be prevented.
Marathon
On the long track, SUSA continue to be attracted by the glitter of gold. Although P3D continue to make up ground, it won’t be enough. [H] are steadfastly holding on to #3 and continue to keep TC (#4) at a distance. SG (#5) are in acute danger of losing touch with the Chinese and must react if they want to bring in Rank 4.
In the end, three teams will fight it out over #6. TAAT (#6), OCN (#7) and CNT (#8) are packed together at approximately the same pace and keep a close eye on each other. The motto for AF (#9), MK (#10) and RKN (#11) appears to be to hold position. However, that won’t be quite so easy as AMD Users have kicked into gear and moved up to #12 and at the same time simply left USA (#13) standing.
Nothing new about BOINC.Italy (#14) and Crunching@EVGA (#15) fighting over #14 but now BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) mean business and are coming up on the outside lane. Whilst Chinese Dream (#17) are showing signs of life, Ukraine (#18) will begin to get nervous. And the reason for that is UK BOINC Team (#19) and 2ch (#20). Both teams are currently going full steam ahead.
Das Kartell (#21) are unable to keep pace with the Japanese and should quickly risk a glance to the rear as BOINC@MIXI (#22) are slowly creeping up. LITOMYSL are found at #23, followed by BOINCstats (#24), LTT Forums (#25), Crystal Dream (#26), BOINC@Poland (#27), U.S. Army (#28), SETIKAH (#29), BOINC@Pfalz (#30) and BOINC Confederation (#31).
Overall
SUSA’s chances for Overall Victory are increasing day by day. P3D (#2) must come up with a solution or hope for some American recklessness. Rank 3 will surely be contested by [H] (#3) and TC (#4). However, SG (#5) cannot yet be dismissed as they could be back in the mix with a good result in the Cross Country.
Margins continue to be extremely tight between ranks 6 to 9. TAAT (#6) are a model of consistency and don’t make it easy for AF (#7), CNT (#8) und OCN (#9). On the other hand, RKN have entrenched themselves at #10. Behind, USA (#11) and MK (#12) don’t give each other an inch. Even so, BOINC.Italy (#13) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) are still in a position to have a say in the matter.
Rank 15 will be within the grasp of both Chinese Dream (#16) and Crunching@EVGA (#15) who are both currently on equal points. Behind, LTT Forums (#17) profit from their strong performance at the Sprint and the weakness in that race of BOINC@Poland (#19). AMD Users have prepared the ground for #18 at the Marathon but they are not so strong at the other disciplines. If that were to continue, it could be a chance for Ukraine (#20), UK BOINC Team (#21) and 2ch (#22).
Behind then follow LITOMYSL (#23), BOINCstats (#24), Das Kartell (#25), BOINC@MIXI (#26) and SETIKAH (#27) packed tight. Crystal Dream are busy collecting points and stand at #28 ahead of BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).
- Who will get the best start at the Cross Country?
- Can P3D still attack SUSA at the Sprint?
- Can TAAT hold on to Rank 6 in the Overall Standings?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

We are now moving into the deciding phase of the Pentathlon with the start of the Cross Country. This is where important decisions are made and a graphic card weakness could in the end be a deciding factor in the Overall Standings. It’s great to see such a high number of teams, more than ever, fighting for medals in the individual disciplines even though SUSA appear dominant at the top at this time.
Cross Country
What a great start from SUSA once again, can you believe it? As soon as the shot was fired, the Americans raced off over the uneven ground and didn’t seem bothered by rocks and shrubbery. It appears they prepared well and were kitted out perfectly. And thus their competitors don’t get to see but the tail feathers of the American Eagle.
Another team which started well are Team China but it remains to be seen how long the cleverly crunched buffer will last. At last CNT (#3) have found a discipline where they engage in a fight for a medal. SG are currently only able to sit at #4 and will now set course for the medals. You can always count on SG at GPUs. On the other hand, more often than not, this seems to be P3D’s Achilles’ heel. Maybe that’s going to change?
AF’s position at #6 cannot be taken for granted, let’s see how that develops. OCN are still holding back and are underway at #7 ahead of [H] (#8) and TAAT (#9). Rookie LTT Forums (#10) continue to cause a stir and are therefore not only surprising RKN (#11), MK (#12) and BOINC.Italy (#13). BOINC@MIXI are valiantly holding on to #14 ahead of 2ch (#15) and BOINC@Poland (#16), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) and USA (#18) who are almost running abreast.
However, BOINC Confederation (#19) have lost sight of their competitors. It’s not as if they’re getting bored as UK BOINC Team (#20) and AMD Users (#21) are almost in line with them. LITOMYSL at (#22) have to invest a bit more if they’re to keep up. BOINCstats follow at #23, ahead of U.S. Army (#24) and Crunching@EVGA (#25). Also, almost running neck and neck over the terrain are BOINC@Pfalz (#26) and SETIKAH (#27) who are thus leaving Ukraine (#28) and Das Kartell (#29) behind them.
Sprint
The decision is getting closer. Surely, quite a few bunkers will be emptied in the next few hours resulting in position changes of any magnitude. SUSA are sprinting towards the next Gold. P3D seem to have decided that Silver is enough but [H] (#3), SG (#4) and TC (#5) aren’t just eyeing up Bronze. There’s much more to come.
It is momentarily unclear what CNT (#6) are still able to do. A sudden attack from the Czechs will continue to be a danger to them. It’s looking good for TAAT (#7) as USA (#8) and OCN (#9) are trailing and have slackened in their pace. AF (#10) and RKN (#11) will most likely decide the last place in the Top10 between themselves. The group fighting behind are just beginning to determine position, currently BOINC.Italy at #12, followed by LTT Forums (#13), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) and Chinese Dreams (#15).
Meisterkühler (#16) are always game for a last minute surprise, let’s wait and see if they can still pull something out of the hat. Just behind, 2ch (#17) and AMD Users (#18) have made good some places and thus left Crunching@EVGA (#19), UK BOINC Team (#20), BOINC@Poland (#21) and SETIKAH (#22) behind them. Ukraine are giving it everything to try and catch up with this group but #23 could be the end of the line for them.
BOINC@MIXI can now be found at #24 only just ahead of the chief statisticians of BOINCstats (#25). There’s a more pronounced gap to BOINC Confederation (#26). Here too, margins are very tight as LITOMYSL (#27) are breathing down the neck of the confederates and even the breath of Das Kartell (#28) and Crystal Dream (#29) can be felt. The field is currently concluded by: U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).
Marathon
Again, just a short detour onto the long distance track today. Our valiant runners are facing many more days here whilst the other individual disciplines take place. There are many more chances to change fortunes with a change of tactics. As the margins are naturally larger due to the nature of the race, this should not be postponed indefinitely. There’s been no change in the top ranks. SUSA are clearly leading the field. However, P3D (#2) continue to nibble at the backlog. [H] can still be found at #3.
We’ve got a new #6 in the Top10. OCN managed to overtake TAAT (#7) this morning and reaped just rewards for their patient pursuit race, at least for the time being.
Lethargy appears to have descended over the teams behind. Are they in a trance? Who knows. On the other hand, BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14), Crunching@EVGA (#15) and BOINC.Italy (#16) are very perky. There’s a lot of fiery activity from #14 to #16. Who knows who will come out on top from this lively trio.
Maybe that’s why it’s so quiet as the other teams are enjoying the show. But not all. At least 2ch fail to be distracted and claim #20 ahead of Das Kartell (#21).
Overall
If the situation remains the same, there’s not much of a chance of taking Gold off SUSA but there’s further development at Sprint and therefore, all’s not yet been decided. Realistically, only P3D (#2) could still be a danger to the Americans. To what extent TC (#3), [H] (#4) or SG (#5) could lay waste to the Green Planet remains to be seen. It cannot yet be dismissed.
CNT have pushed up to #6 past AF (#7). The Francophones were able to hang on to this rank whilst dismissing TAAT onto #8 at the same time. At this moment, TAAT have to share this rank with OCN. RKN have currently fortified #10 as MK (#11), BOINC.Italy (#12) and USA (#13) aren’t managing to crunch any closer. However, this is exactly what BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) have succeeded in doing. They’ve managed to establish the connection to the front runners through powerful kangaroo jumps at the Marathon and the Sprint.
There are also LTT Forums (#15) who have moved up in the rankings as they pulled off a very good start at the Cross Country. BOINC@Poland (#16) are moving along in the slipstream and are thus able to keep AMD Users (#17), Crunching@EVGA (#18) and Chinese Dream (#19) behind them. 2ch have worked their way up to #20 followed by BOINC@MIXI (#21) who have made a giant leap.
UK BOINC Team continue to hold on to #22 as Ukraine (#23), LITOMYSL (#24), BOINCstats (#25) had to forfeit some places. I managed to find BOINC Confederation at #26. They’ve just moved past Das Kartell (#27) and continue to put distance between SETIKAH (#28), U.S. Army (#29), Crystal Dream (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).
- Who is still able to spoil SUSA’s victory at the Sprint?
- Can SG claim Bronze at the Sprint?
- Who will come off best at the City Run?
As you will see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 10 - 14 May 2018
What an enthralling end phase at the Sprint, there was everything to be played for. The City Run got underway with lots of action and the current situation there can only be described as prickly. The Pentathlon has moved into its torrid phase, 2 decisions have already been made but 3 are still outstanding. And they still pack a punch.
Sprint
Gold goes to SUSA who dictated the tempo throughout and managed to cross the finish line with the original margin intact. Silver goes to P3D who were made to fear for their Silver medal right at the end. With a final strike, CNT shot past their competitors onto Bronze on the last day. Congratulations.
other teams would surely have known that they have to reckon with the Czechs at the Sprint. It’s all the more inexplicable that they had nothing to offer to counter their attack. [H] shouldn’t be reproached as there’s ‘only’ sheet metal left with #4 but still, this fourth place is their best standing ever in the Pentathlon. I would suggest that they deserve to be congratulated for it. On the other hand, SG (#5) and TC (#6) ended up under the wheels and would each have expected more. That might have consequences for the Chinese, especially as they are thus losing valuable points in the Overall Standings.
TAAT claimed another 7th place without being challenged. OCN (#8) and RKN (#9) were not quite able to keep to the pace whilst RKN’s end spurt either came too late or was just a little too weak. USA complete the Top10.
As for AF, the same as for RKN applies to them, there was a measurable end spurt but it wasn’t enough to catch the Americans and thus, they are at #11 in the standings. BOINC.Italy completed the Sprint at #12 as per usual, ahead of LTT Forums who made us take notice with a finish at #13. BOINC@AUSTRALIA were able to secure #14 in the end and did not leave Chinese Dream with a chance. In the end, Meisterkühler were left with #16. Margins were tight behind. 2ch claimed #17 ahead of AMD Users (#18), UK BOINC Team (#19) and BOINC@Poland (#20).
There was quite a bit of drama to be found behind. Crunching@EVGA (#21) ran out of breath on the last day whilst SETIKAH (#22) gave it everything. In the end it was only just enough for Crunching@EVGA. Ukraine went over the finish line at #23, followed by BOINC@MIXI (#24) and BOINCstats (#25). LITOMYSL got the better of BOINC Conferation (#27) and thus rank 26. The decision behind was decided by a photo finish. Crystal Dream claimed #28 and thus thwarted the effort from Das Kartell (#29) to regain their place. U.S. Army crossed the finish line at #30, followed by BOINC@Pfalz.
Marathon
Once again, just a quick look at the Marathon. SUSA lead and control the advantage but P3D are closing in. It has to be said that the harvest on the Green Planet needs to improve as otherwise, it won’t be sufficient. Rightfully, [H] (#3) can continue to be hopeful of claiming Bronze but Team China pose a threat. The dragons are closing in and if the H-team don’t soon pick up the pace, it will get very difficult for them. Behind, SG (#5) and OCN (#6) appear to do nothing but maintain their positions which leads us to suspect that their focus lies elsewhere.
TAAT can naturally be found at #7 ahead of Team CNT (#8) who are slowly getting into the rhythm. AF will most likely be left with #9, whilst MK (#10) shouldn’t feel too reassured. The reason for that is that AMD Users (#11) and RKN (#12) are not giving each other an inch, are spurring each other on and thus advancing in powerful strides.
There’s continued hot action at #19. 2ch (#19) and UK BOINC Team (#20) are in a clinch and can’t currently decide which of the two are the better team. On the other hand, BOINCstats (#23) have managed to get away from LITOMYSL (#24) and thus been able to secure #23.
Cross Country
This is where we see the big numbers but don’t be deceived. It’s to be compared to the time when Germany had hyperinflation and 50 million aren’t an awful lot and advantages can melt faster than butter in the sun. SUSA lead the field and are clearly demonstrating their ambition for their third Gold. Behind is an aerial battle between Eagle and Dragon. SG (#2) have got their nose in front at this time and are keeping TC (#3) behind them. However, this can change by the hour.
CNT don’t appear to be able to follow and remain at #4 just lying in wait. P3D are faced with losing valuable points for the Overall Standings as are currently only at #5. They’ve got to make something happen! AF (#6) continue to maintain their position well but are slowly coming under pressure from OCN (#7) and TAAT (#8). [H] follow at rank 9 and are looking good in the rocky terrain. RKN are currently en route to #10 only just ahead of LTT Forums (#11). Then follow 2ch (#12), MK (#13), BOINC@MIXI (#14), BOINC.@Italy (#15), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) and BOINC@Poland (#17).
USA (#18) have had to break off but maintain a little buffer to AMD Users (#19) and UK BOINC Team (#20). It’s really tight between LITOMYSL (#21) and BOINC Confederation (#22), a similar situation to the one between Crunching@EVGA (#23) and BOINCstats. U.S. Army (#25) have found a few graphic cards but need them to counter the attacks by SETIKAH (#26) and BOINC@Pfalz (#27) and even Ukraine (#28). Das Kartell can do nothing but watch (#29), the same goes for Crystal Dream (#30).
City Run
The traditional City Run is harbouring a surprise. It’s not SUSA who lead the field. It’s P3D who had the best start. SUSA are currently trying to clear the field from behind and have just gained #2 and thus relegated SG to #3. Further along, there’s already a little gap opening up to CNT (#4), TC (#5), TAAT (#6) and OCN (#7). Whilst AF are not unexpected at #8, LITOMYSL (#9) aren’t usually found so far in front. Let’s wait and see if the Czechs can keep this up.
BOINC.Italy at #10 follow behind by a small margin ahead of USA (#11), Chinese Dream (#12) and [H] (#13). SETIKAH are also moving along well at #14 and are keeping BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15) behind them. It’s surprising to find RKN this far behind, currently only at #16. Ukraine at #17 follow on not far behind. The next teams are MK (#18) and Crunching@EVGA (#19) who are only separated by a whisker. Also, the margin between AMD Users (#20) and Das Kartell (#21) is paper-thin. BOINC@Poland should be expected to do better than #22, whilst Crystal Dream #23 won’t be too dissatisfied.
2ch are currently running at #24, followed by LTT Forums (#25), BOINC@MIXI (#26), BOINCstats (#27), UK BOINC Team (#28) and BOINC Confederation (#29). On the other hand, there’s once again a fight between U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).
Overall
We now have a list, for the first time, with points in all disciplines. And that shows that it’s unlikely that victory will be taken from SUSA. And even P3D could afford a slipup but shouldn’t become reckless. SG are currently at #3 and have just pushed TC down to #4. CNT (#5) maintain a small distance but with a surprise attack at the Cross Country could reshuffle the pack.
[H] have fallen back to #6. They are losing points, especially at the City Run but we shouldn’t overlook that this team are still fighting for Bronze at the Marathon. TAAT have naturally taken up residence at #7, where else? On the other hand, rank 6 is not too far away. However, #8 is a lot closer and currently taken over by OCN and then AF at #9. Even though RKN are a little behind in the City Run, their success at collecting points secures them #10. BOINC.Italy can be found at #11, followed by USA (#12) and MK (#13) who in turn can feel BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) breathing down their neck.
Further along you can see a bit of a gap developing which begins to divide the field. Those who wish to overcome the distance must do so in giant leaps or down their tools. Chinese Dream (#15) are leading the second half of the field, followed by LTT Forums (#16) and AMD Users (#17) on equal points. Further along, Crunching@EVGA are holding on to #18 and thus ahead of BOINC@Poland (#19) who should, however, keep an eye on 2ch (#20) and LITOMYSL (#21). Ukraine are at #22 and thus ahead of: BOINC@MIXI (#23), SETIKAH (#24) and UK BOINC Team (#25). Das Kartell (#26) are determined to hold on to their ranking which BOINCstats (#27) wants to prevent.
- Can the Pfalz triumph over the Army at Cross Country?
- Can SG win the City Run?
- Will P3D recover at the Cross Country?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 11 - 15 May 2018
More than 2/3 of the Pentathlon is now behind us and we thus enter the deciding phase in this year’s event. Three disciplines are still active and the effort is written all over the teams‘ faces. SUSA are the first team who could potentially win all five races in one year which would constitute a phenomenal achievement. However, there’s still time for the other teams to put a spoke in their wheel.
Marathon
It’s in the nature of this race that distances grow the more time passes. However, the battle at the City Run will tempt the teams into drawing off resources and only maintain the established distance here. And that can quickly go awry. There had to come a reaction from SUSA (#1) or they would otherwise have got their tail feathers singed in P3D‘s (#2) in pursuit of them.
[H] (#3) too are forced to counter-steer to prevent TC (#4) from coming any closer. That has repercussions in their performance at the City Run and possibly affects both teams. On the other hand, SG (#5) are maintaining a high tempo and the Germans are even extending their advantage over OCN (#6). The question must be asked how meaningful that is as they are right in the middle of the battle for medals at Asteriods.
TAAT (#7) can only hope that CNT (#8) move their focus over to the City Run as it might get pretty tight otherwise. On the other hand, AF seem to be content with #9 and don’t appear to feel any pressure from MK (#10), AMD Users (#11) and RKN (#12). The margins within this trio are tight enough to allow for improvement in ranks but also for losses. It’s beginning to get a little tight for USA at #13 as BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) are advancing fast in long strides.
Crunching@EVGA (#15) might find themselves a little too far away. Caution is advised in regards to BOINC.Italy (#16) und Chinese Dream (#17). However, it looks as if the Chinese dream bubble has burst because you couldn’t possibly describe this as running. You think you are watching it in slow motion though they do rear up now and again. Ukraine continue to float between the worlds at #18 but the Ukraine team should not get too complacent. 2ch (#19) have got the better of UK BOINC Team (#20) who have come under pressure from BOINC@MIXI (#21) who in turn have overtaken Das Kartell (#22).
BOINCstats at #23 can’t decide whether to keep in touch with those in front or behind. The current tendency seems to be to go forwards. LTT Forums (#24) and LITOMYSL (#25) have changed places and attempt to detach from Crystal Dream (#26), BOINC@Poland (#27), U.S. Army (#28), SETIKAH (#29), BOINC@Pfalz (#30) and BOINC Confederation.
Cross Country
SUSA continue to lead the pursuit for points but SG (#2) are not giving in and setting everything in motion to keep up. TC (#3) on the other hand had to break off. Tactics or weakness? We will see. We must always consider tactics when looking at CNT (#4) even though the deficit is already becoming quite large. This year too, P3D (#5) appear to be weak in the GPU-discipline which sees them forfeit vital points in the Overall Standings.
AF are coming under pressure at #6 from [H] (#7) who have picked up their pace considerably. They have changed places with OCN (#9). TAAT continue to remain at #8. A really strong performance by LTT Forums who have clawed #10 off RKN (#11). The Rechenkraftlers can afford a calm look to the rear as the next battling teams are a few light years away.
That group of battling rivals really pack a punch. They are led by BOINC@MIXI (#12) who are in a skin-tight duel with 2ch (#13) at the moment. Close behind follow BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) and BOINC.Italy (#15) who are also packed tight together. Lying in wait and using the slipstream are MK (#16) and BOINC@Poland (#17). The spectators are witness to a fight between three teams behind. USA still at #18 are awaiting the overtaking manoevre of Crunching@EVGA (#19) who have made a mega leap and thus surprised their neighbour in the standings, AMD Users (#20).
Other casualties were UK BOINC Team (#21), LITOMYSL (#22) and BOINC Confederation (#23). Unimpressed, BOINCstats are holding on to #24. The Statiticians are quite able to do that as there’s no danger from behind. SETIKAH (#25) and Ukraine (#26) were able to improve which had as a consequence that U.S. Army (#27) and BOINC@Pfalz (#28) deteriorated. Behind them, Crystal Dream (#29) are trying to stir these two up which already gave them success with Das Kartell (#30).
City Run
SUSA are having to put up a fight to keep their competitors at bay. Neither P3D (#2) nor SG (#3) are willing to give up. However, we shouldn’t discount CNT (#4) and TC (#5) in the fight for medals as final bunker actions can and will stir up the field.
OCN have lost quite a bit of ground, now only at #9. TAAT (#6), AF (#7) and [H] (#8) were thus able to benefit. The strong interim sprint of [H] has cost LITOMYSL (#10), BOINC.Italy (#11), USA (#12) and Chinese Dream (#13) a place. In all that commotion, SETIKAH (#14) are creeping up to the Chinese and are nearly in a position to overtake.
It’s unusual for RKN at #15 to be so far behind but that doesn’t have to be their permanent resting place. Crunching@EVGA (#16) are coming closer as well as BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) who aren’t that far away. Ukraine can be found at #18 ahead of the solidly frozen MK (#19), AMD Users (#20) and Das Kartell (#21). 2ch (#22) have managed to gain 2 places and have just activated their blinkers. Not attracting much attention are BOINC@Poland (#23), Crystal Dream (#24), BOINCstats (#25) and BOINC@MIXI (#26).
At this moment, LTT Forums appear to be out of breath and if not careful, #27 could soon be gone as UK BOINC Team (#28) are already on their heels. Then follow BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).
Overall
SUSA are clearly in the lead and it ought not be possible to separate them from their Gold. In addition, P3D seem secure at #2 but watch out as a lot can still happen at the City Run and Cross Country. SG continue to hold on to #3 only just ahead of TC (#4) and CNT (#5) who have still got potential. Now [H] (#6) decide to get into the fray. A powerful increase in speed at the City Run and Cross Country are pushing them back into the fight for overall medals.
TAAT are once again the 7th little goat which is being pursued by the Francophone rooster (#8) in sheep’s clothing. OCN at #9 have had to concede some ground but should be able to retaliate. There don’t seem to be many chances for RKN (#10) to improve, their arrears are already quite substantial. Rechenkraftlers won’t be easy to banish from the Top 10 as BOINC.Italy (#11), USA (#12) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#13) would have to surpass themselves.
Only #14 for MK leaves us wondering why, especially as at Asteroids it’s not looking great. Or is that a sign?
Crunching@EVGA have crunched to #15, past Chinese Dream (#16). Super progress in the Cross Cuntry but desolate in the City Run, that‘s LTT Forums (#17). This is resulting in an increase in distance to the front and allows the following teams of AMD Users (#18), 2ch (#19) and BOINC@Poland (#20) to be hopeful. We can find LITOMYSL at #21, followed by Ukraine (#22), BOINC@MIXI (#23), SETIKAH (#24) and UK BOINC Team (#25).
BOINCstats have dug in at #26 and behind in the points are Das Kartell (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).
- Can we expect a bunker from MK at the City Run?
- Can [H] reach for Bronze in the Overall Standings?
- Will TAAT succeed to cross the finish line at #7 in all the races?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 12 - 16 May 2018
The 12th day of the Pentathlon is up and running. The computers groan and smoulder. A few make some funny noises. And some of the hardware has given up the ghost. However, our associated crunchers aren’t suffering quite as much but you can tell that the last few days have been taking their toll on them. Some teams look shattered and yet others as if they’ve only just started. It’s not just the fitness that will be the deciding factor in the end but the will to persevere, the will to squeeze maximum performance out of the available hardware. The will to succeed.
Cross Country
The deciding phase has begun. The teams are lining up for tomorrow’s last day. Here, there’s not been a preliminary decision regarding any medals. Even SUSA (#1) could go empty handed. SG (#2) are putting the pressure on which they’ve got to do because TC (#3) are pushing even harder. The joker could be CNT (#4). Though the Czechs are losing ground, a massive bunker on the closing day would not be unrealistic. It remains to be seen if it will be substantial enough.
P3D at #5 are finding it hard to keep up the tempo and are now coming under pressure from [H] (#6) who are showing us their best side at this Pentathlon. As is customary, TAAT have crunched to #7 and are increasing their distance to AF (#8) by the hour. OCN have already collected twice as many points as RKN at #10 which should make it difficult to dislodge them from #9. LTT Forums continue to secure #11 whilst behind them #12 continues to be hard fought over. BOINC@MIXI are still holding on to it but MK (#13) have finally stepped on the gas and thus shaken off 2ch (#14), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15), BOINC.Italy (#16) and Crunching@EVGA (#17).
BOINC@Poland (#18) had to forfeit a place as well as USA (#19). AMD Users aren’t making any effort to get further ahead and so remain at #20 in the table. LITOMYSL (#21) have used the rough terrain to their advantage and managed to get past UK BOINC Team (#22). Almost marching in step are BOINC Confederation (#23) and BOINCstats (#24). Will they have to be apprehensive about Crystal Dream? The Dreamers have won a massive amount of places and thus caught Ukraine (#26) and SETIKAH (#27) red-handed. But so far the distances are minimal and each stumble could make quite a difference. BOINC@Pfalz (#28) and U.S. Army (#29) continue to run neck and neck and must prepare for a new fellow player as Das Kartell (#30) are on the move.
City Run
SUSA are slowly but surely expanding their lead. P3D (#2) are trying to limit the damage and can at least keep SG (#3) at a distance. [H] have made a giant leap to #4 and have surprised their rivals which the [H]ardens mainly suspected at the Marathon. It’s quite a controversial strategy which could in the end result in two forth places.
As a consequence, CNT have fallen back to #5. The deficit is already quite large. The same goes for TC (#6) who are moving along just behind the Czechs. It remains to be seen if both their end spurts can wipe out their arrears. TAAT have slipped down to #7 but at least still ahead of AF (#8). The Francophones should remain vigilant. LITOMYSL (#9) and OCN (#10) are currently engaged in a hot battle which could push both teams further forward.
BOINC.Italy (#11) and USA (#12) aren’t paying any attention to all these position changes. However, that will soon change. RKN (#13) and MK (#14) have woken up and are moving towards the front. SETIKAH (#15) and Chinese Dream (#16) were the last victims of Meisterkühler and together with Crunching@EVGA (#17), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#18) and Ukraine (#19) might want to launch a self-help group. AMD Users at #20 have no need of that.
2ch have just taken up #21 followed by the teams on equal credits of Das Kartell and BOINC@Poland at #22. BOINCstats (#24) were able to benefit from a weak phase of Crystal Dream (#25) but the dream bubble isn’t about to burst just yet.
Marathon – Quick Update
The medals had practically been handed out already: SUSA ahead of P3D ahead of [H]. But Bronze at least is threatening to wobble. This is due to TC who continue to catch up and will be in striking distance right until the end. [H] are currently causing a stir at the City Run and could potentially risk their Bronze medal at the Marathon. There aren’t any changes for quite a stretch behind them. It’s only at #16 where there’s been some development. That’s where Chinese Dream pounced and with a hefty interim spurt relegated BOINC.Italy to #17. Even the fight for #19 is beginning to get interesting. 2ch (#19) had to look on as BOINC@MIXI (#20) overtook UK BOINC Team (#21) and have now set their course. At the end of the field, SETIKAH won #28 and so pushed back USA (#29).
Overall
Gone are the times when there were big leaps in the Overall Standings. The teams are preparing for the end battles which will bring about a bit more movement.
SUSA remain in the lead ahead of P3D (#2) and SG (#3). TC (#4), [H] (#5) and CNT (#6) continue to lie in wait and keep their focus on Bronze. And just behind, TAAT have currently managed to stand at #7 in all assessments, quite a feat. However, AF (#8) and OCN (#9) could still spoil their plan. The Top10 continues to be concluded by RKN.
MK (#11) should keep an eye on BOINC.Italy (#12) and also USA (#13) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) who remain visible on the radar. Crunching@EVGA are currently beginning to fortify #15 which is made easier as Chinese Dream (#16) had to forfeit some points at the City Run. This is bringing LTT Forums (#17) and AMD Users (#18) closer to the Chinese and gives both new hope. Even though 2ch (#19) and BOINC@Poland (#20) are packed tight, there’s currently not a lot of friction between the two. LITOMYSL (#21) might be able to coax a fire to burn.
Behind, MIXI (#23) had to let Ukraine (#22) pass just now, though on equal points. SETIKAH continue to defend at #24 ahead of UK BOINC Team (#25), BOINCstats (#26), Das Kartell (#27), Crystal Dream (#28) and BOINC Confederation (#29). The decision of who will cross the finish line at #30 in the end will be decided by U.S. Army and BOINC@Pfalz, whereby the Americans are currently enjoying a slight advantage.
- When will the teams release the bunkers at the Cross Country?
- What is still possible at the City Run?
- What’s to come in the Marathon?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 13 - 17 May 2018
The penultimate day of the 9th Pentathlon is under way and it could be the day of the dragon. However, a bit more about that below. Today is decision day at Cross Country and tomorrow is the day of the Grand Finale. I hope that you are ready?
Cross Country
Here is where the decision of the day will take place. SUSA look like the assured victors and it will be difficult to dislodge them from their place in the golden sun. But behind, everything is still possible. Even SG (#2) could still stumble and fall off the podium because an attack from Team China (#3) and CNT (#4) are almost certain in the end phase. However, the Germans won’t just be standing by and do nothing. Once again, in the end, it’ll come down to who has the largest ...
P3D (#5) are theoretically still within reach of the podium but the graphic power of the other teams appears mightier. But maybe the Green Planet will surprise us with green power. On the other hand it’s not quite clear what [H] (#6) are still planning to achieve. However, we can’t rule out a big surprise from them.
TAAT continue happily at #7 and must be hoping that AF are equally happy with #8. The defending champion of the Cross Country, OCN, can only be found at #9 at the moment. Don’t they like numbers or is there more to come? Behind, RKN should be fairly secure at #10 as LTT Forums (#11) are already very far away with an equally large margin to the rear.
In the fight over #12, MK have managed to put distance between BOINC@MIXI (#13), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) and 2ch (#15). However, the margins aren’t large enough to provide a sense of security. This could provide a chance for BOINC.Italy (#17) and Crunching@EVGA (#16). They had to break off for now but a well timed end offensive could turn everything upside down.
It appears as if BOINC@Poland are currently trying to secure #18, however, USA (#19) are slowly beginning to catch up. A good performance in the last few hours has assured #20 for AMD Users as LITOMYSL (#21) and UK BOINC Team (#22) are noticeably behind and haven’t drawn attention to themselves with sudden activity. The decision of who will be allowed to claim #23 has not yet been taken. BOINCstats (#23) have just set off at a pace but BOINC Confederation (#24) are not to be shaken off lightly.
Rank 25 is not yet secure for Ukraine as Crystal Dream (#26) and SETIKAH (#27) are just too close. BOINC@Pfalz had risked a brave attack on USA and were thus rewarded with #28. The Americans must be careful that they don’t lose #29 as well because Das Kartell (#30) is running faster than them.
Marathon
On this long track, most postions appear to have been secured already. Short spontaneous bursts will not be expected regularly as the margins are considerably larger. However, those who have prepared well in the last few days may find themselves justly rewarded. SUSA continue to lead the field and once again extend their distance to P3D. However, there has been a change behind them. TC have run to #3 and have thus taken the Bronze medal out of the hand of [H]. Will there now follow a counter attack? If not, that would be a bitter blow for [H].
What else is new? BOINC@AUSTRALIA have run up to rank #13 and thus relegated USA to #14. And at #19 we can now find BOINC@MIXI who have pushed 2ch back again. At the end of the field, BOINC Confederation have reared up and snatched #30 by overtaking BOINC@Pfalz.
City Run
SUSA ahead of P3D, the familiar duo at the top. However, behind them, TC have struck once again. With a mighty interim spurt, the Dragons powered past SG (#4) to #3. Can the blue-yellow team retaliate? CNT were a victim of the Dragon but as [H] (#7) have lost momentum, they were able to remain at #5. AF have pushed up to #6 and appear to be profiting from [H] diverting resources to the Marathon. That could mean a chance for TAAT, allowing them to reclaim #7. OCN have succeeded in relegating LITOMYSL to #10 which gives them #9.
BOINC.Italy (#13) have shown some weakness in the last few hours which their rivals at USA (#11) and RKN (#12) boldly used to their advantage. SETIKAH (#14) are currently not posing a threat to the Italians despite having nabbed MK (#15) and cutting loose from Chinese Dream (#16). Behind, BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) are beginning to come closer and will be expected to be passing by. That will most likely no longer be possible for Crunching@EVGA (#18).
Ukraine secure #19 even though AMD Users (#20) have not yet given up. Meanwhile, BOINC@Poland (#21) and BOINCstats (#22) have overtaken the duo of 2ch (#23) and Das Kartell (#23) who have accomplished the feat of having the same points. There are no changes behind: Crystal Dream (#25) only ahead by a very small margin of BOINC@MIXI (#26) and UK BOINC Team (#27), LTT Forums (#28), BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32).
Overall
SUSA are close to Overall Victory and it shouldn’t be possible to take Silver away from P3D. However, there’s still a hard contest for Bronze. TC have pushed onto the Bronze rank with their increased performance at the Marathon and the City Run. It will now be difficult for SG (#4) to recover from this without any help. However, as [H] (#5) had to break off, the Germans can at least be assured of rank 4 at this time. On the other hand, CNT (#6) will already have rank 5 in their sights.
TAAT hold on to #7 but must keep an eye on AF (#8) and OCN (#9). On the other hand, it shouldn’t still be possible to take #10 away from RKN. Behind, BOINC@AUSTRALIA are continuing with increased pace and now already at #12. Could Meisterkühler (#11) still be a threat to the Australians? We will see. But let’s not forget about USA (#13) and BOINC.Italy (#14). Both are still within striking distance. Behind there are no changes at Crunching@EVGA (#15), Chinese Dream (#16), LTT Forums (#17) and AMD Users (#18). I can only hope that this is the calm before the storm. BOINC@Poland at #19 will be watching without much excitement.
LITOMYSL (#20) were able to use a small weakness of 2ch (#21) to their advantage whilst Ukraine (#22) managed to detach from BOINC@MIXI (#23) under their own steam. SETIKAH have good chances to retain #24. Trembling behind, UK BOINC Team (#25) must fear an attack from BOINCstats (#26). Das Kartell (#27), Crystal Dream (#28), BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32) are too far away for that.
- Can SG claim Silver at the Cross Country?
- Will [H] retaliate at the Marathon?
- Will TAAT climb back up to #7 at the City Run?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Day 14 - 18 May 2018
As we look into the faces we see how tired and drawn they are. Once again, the last few metres will demand everything from the competitors. However, they’ve got to persevere as two disciplines are still outstanding.
Cross Country
The third Gold this year is going to SUSA who managed to cross the finish line at a comfortable pace. SG secured Silver with a brilliant final spurt and didn’t leave Team China a sliver of a chance. TC thus collected their third individual Bronze medal overall. Congratulations.
The final spurt of CNT turned out to be a bit meagre so that even #4 was wobbling. However, P3D didn’t pull it off on the home straight and had to contend with #5. [H] went over the finish line at #6 ahead of TAAT who at #7 stayed true to their form. AF (#8), OCN (#9) and RKN (#10) didn’t get scorched in the end.
LTT Forums finished at #11 in the field which was thus their best individual standing. Although Meisterkühler tried to intervene it didn’t make a difference for them in the end at #12. BOINC@MIXI managed to salvage #13 as BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) threatened with excess tempo. The same goes for Crunching@EVGA whose final spurt resulted in #15. In the end, neither 2ch (#16) nor BOINC.Italy (#17) were able to follow such concentrated power.
For BOINC@Poland rank #18 didn’t get torched because neither USA (#19) nor AMD Users (#20) were in a position to start the fire. In addition, both LITOMYSL (#21) and UK BOINC Team (#22) were able to cross the finish line in a relaxed manner. That’s not something the teams behind could do. On the home straight, BOINC Confederation grabbed #23 and gave BOINCstats (#24) quite a shock. And behind, Ukraine (#25) had a fulminant last day and gave Crystal Dream no chance.
SETIKAH cross the finish line at #27, followed by BOINC@Pfalz (#28). The expected attack by U.S. Army (#29) did not happen in the end. That allowed even Das Kartell (#30) to move closer. Chinese Dream arrived at #31 and didn’t seem to be getting on too well with GPUs.
Marathon
What’s going to happen here in the next few hours? SUSA’s advantage is large and to catch up to them would be a feat compared to climbing Mount Everest. P3D (#2) are currently still trying to make the impossible possible. However, there’s serious danger behind in double measure. TC (#3) and [H] (#4) could potentially shake up the podium with a powerful final sprint and thus cause the Green Planet to quickly wilt.
SG should be safe at #5 as well as OCN at #6. TAAT (#7) can’t be sure yet that CNT aren’t going to decide to shake off #8 and AF at (#9) aren’t that impossibly far behind. The last team able to push their way into the Top 10 will be decided between MK (#10) and AMD Users (#11). Both are only separated by a whisker. Who knows, even RKN (#12) might still harbour ambitions, it wouldn’t be impossible. On the other hand, #13 seems to constitute maximum outcome for BOINC@AUSTRALIA #13. They’ve so far been able to keep USA behind them at #14 without any great difficulty whereby the Americans are almost completely exhausted standing up. Chinese Dream (#15) could still use that to their advantage.
Crunching@EVGA were already made to feel the power of the Chinese and currently find themselves at #16 and should at least not let BOINC.Italy (#17) out of sight. It might get tight on the finish line for the Ukraine, currently at #18, as BOINC@MIXI (#19) have powered a little closer. At this time, 2ch have secured #20. Behind are UK BOINC Team (#21), BOINCstats (#22), LTT Forums (#23) and Das Kartell (#24), all keeping together. The Brits have a small advantage, the trio behind don’t leave each other any leeway. The organisers would do well to calibrate the camera for the photo finish.
LITOMYSL are holding on to #25 and should be safe from Crystal Dream (#26). The Dreamers’ point of departure now looks a bit uncomfortable as BOINC@Poland (#27), SETIKAH (#28) and BOINC Confederation (#29) are all perfectly capable of an attack. This would be possible but not expected from U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31).
City Run
It continues to be difficult to work out the standard track at the Pentathlon. SUSA lead and will most likely make the race safe with an expected spurt at the end but what’s happening behind? P3D cannot be assured of Silver as TC (#3) cannot be dismissed and SG (#4) and CNT (#5) have most likely still got their pockets full. AF #6 can enjoy the spectacle from the Rooster’s best vantage point. TAAT (#7) won’t most likely pose a threat and hope that [H] (#8) don’t return.
It took just one twitch of their muscles for RKN (#9) to whizz past OCN (#10), LITOMYSL (#11) and USA (#12). There appears to be no going back or forth for BOINC.Italy (#13). This gives the Italians a great spot from where to view the action behind them. SETIKAH (#14) have come under pressure from MK (#15) and who knows, maybe even BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#16) can get back into the mix. The kangaroos have just managed to rush past Chinese Dream (#17). Behind then follow Crunching@EVGA (#18), Ukraine (#19) and AMD Users (#20).
BOINC@Poland are currently at #21 and need to guard against BOINCstats (#22). And even BOINC@MIXI (#23), 2ch (#24), Crystal Dream (#25) and also Das Kartell (#26) will not be giving up quite so easily. The end of the field is led by LTT Forums (#27) who managed to slip past UK BOINC Team (#28). Lying in wait behind are BOINC Confederation (#29). The duo of U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31) are clinging to each other and can see SETI.Bitola (#32) far behind them.
Overall
Have all the medals been allocated? At least Gold will certainly go to SUSA. Otherwise the distances seem large but as the City Run could get a bit chaotic, nothing can be dismissed at this stage. P3D will want to defend #2 but TC (#3) might want to put a spoke in their wheel. Even SG (#4) have still got a chance to win Bronze but will need others to help with that. However, CNT should do everything to defend #5 as [H] (#6) could still affect a change of places here.
TAAT at #7 must continue to keep an eye on AF (#8). On the other hand, OCN (#9) have lost a little ground and must put aside any further ambitions they might have had. RKN will most likely cross the finish line at #10. It’s looking good for MK (#11) but as BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12) are beginning to excel at the City Run, it could still get pretty tight here. Behind, USA (13) and BOINC.Italy (#14) are only separated by one position which will make a long day for both. Behind are Crunching@EVGA at #15.
Neck and neck continue Chinese Dreams (#16), LTT Forums (#17) and AMD Users (#18). BOINC@Poland at #19 would be able to push up to their ranks but their previous performance leaves that in doubt. LITOMYSL (#20) have nabbed 2ch (#21) and removed themselves further from Ukraine (#22) and SETIKAH (#23).
Behind, on equal points, close together and fighting it out are UK BOINC Team (#24) and BOINCstats (#25). It remains to be seen if that continues or if there isn’t a split on the cards soon.
Das Kartell must fear for #27 as BOINC Confederation (#28) have closed in and are now in overtaking distance. Although Crystal Dream (#29) are trying to contain Confederation, it remains to be seen if they can succeed. U.S. Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32) are bringing up the rear of the field.
What questions are left?
- Who will claim the medal in the City Run?
- Can [H] take Bronze in the Marathon?
- Must SG be content with sheet metal in the Overall Standings?
As you can see, it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

The End - Part 1
The deed is done. All participants can give themselves a pat on the back for the 9th time as hardware, body and soul have been taken to their limit and often beyond. Some of you may have redrawn your boundary of endurance. It’s now time to recuperate and to look back at the events of the last few days.
As is customary, the report will appear in two parts. Part 1 will deal with the outcome of the disciplines whereas part 2 following behind will be concerned with the Overall Standings.
City Run
This discipline which takes us over the traditional route ended surprisingly quiet. The great bunker battle failed to materialize which gave us an insight into how exhausted the teams were. SUSA won the City Run and were not even being pressured by any of their rivals. P3D took Silver ahead of Team China. Congratulations to the medal winners.
Though they tried their hardest, SG remained at #4 but as there was no challenge by CNT (#5), there was thus no danger from behind. AF can also be content with #6 which shows what a great race the Francophones had. Rank #7 did of course go to TAAT who were an example of consistency this year. [H] were left with #8 and at that with a great margin. Had they been prepared to sacrificed this, it might have been enough to reach Bronze at the Marathon.
With a final spurt, RKN snatched rank 9 and thus relegated OCN to #10. It’s the first time this year that the Overclocker’s position isn’t in single figures. LITOMYSL should be popping the corks, rank 11; it took me a while to find another example of such a good standing at a discipline. In 2014 we find them at 10th place in our history and thus #11 is by a long way the second best achievement of this team at a Pentathlon ever.
Rank 12 goes to USA ahead of BOINC.Italy (#13). On the final day, Meisterkühler were able to show improvement to claim #14 and thus ditched SETIKAH (#15). For the Koreans this is not a reason to cry as this ranking is this year’s highlight for them. Next over the finish line follow Chinese Dream (#16) and in so doing, they left BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#17) behind them. This year, the City Run constituted Australia’s weak point, on the other hand, last year, rank 17 at the Cross Country was the team’s best individual ranking; there’s going to be a lot of lamenting at the highest level.
Rank 18 goes to the Ukraine. Here too, the final spurt was the deciding factor. It thus allowed them to run past Crunching@EVGA (#19). AMD Users secured #20. Behind them, BOINC@Poland dragged themselves over the finish line at #21. Just in time as BOINC@MIXI (#22) were advancing at quite a tempo having already steamrollered BOINCstats (#23) and 2ch (#25). Crystal Dream were able to get into the fray and improved their standing to #24.
Das Kartell (#26), however, preferred peace and quiet, their attack did not happen. Indeed, there was no threat from behind. Although LTT Forums improved onto #27, the margin was already quite pronounced. Thus, UK BOINC Team had to content with #28 but were able to leave BOINC Confederation (#29), US Army (#30), BOINC@Pfalz (#31) and SETI.Bitola (#32) behind them.
Marathon
Victory went to SUSA and thus in the 5th Discipline for this year. They made their intentions known on the very first day and as the assembled competitors didn’t dare to rough things up, couldn’t in the end avert the American win. Silver went to P3D who were able to keep Team China off their backs in the end. Congratulations.
In the end, [H] were left with only #4. It looks as if they felt secure far too soon and invested too many resources in the City Run. This shows us once again why tactics can be so decisive in the Pentathlon. SG had the luxury of trundling along in the last few metres as #5 couldn’t still be taken from them. This also applied perfectly to OCN who crossed the finish line at #6 and in so doing, recorded the best individual result in this year’s Pentathlon.
TAAT were able to secure #7 in the end as neither CNT (#8) nor AF (#9) had the power to influence that. Behind, the photo finish had to decide the order. MK or AMD Users, that was the question. It was enough for Meisterkühler in the end for #10. Even though AMD Users (#11) didn’t manage the jump into the Top 10 they were able to celebrate their achievement along with MK because it was the best ranking for both this year.
Not in any danger behind, RKN collected #12 and thereby completed the dozen. Chinese Dreams managed to turn on the heat and BOINC@AUSTRALIA had to sweat it out for a bit. With a final spurt, the Chinese collected #13 and must have given BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#14) quite a surprise at the finish. This end spurt topped off the Chinese in their first Pentathlon and brought them up to #15 in the Overall Standings.
There was no resistance to this Chinese onslaught by USA (#15) and Crunching@EVGA (#16). Even behind there were no changes to record in the end. BOINC.Italy claimed #17, ahead of Ukraine (#18). Their best result at a CPU-discipline this year showed BOINC@MIXI (#19) ahead of 2ch (#20) and UK BOINC Team (#21).
That lively fight by the trio at #22 has now been decided. Das Kartell (#22) came out on top, LTT Forums (#23) finished in the middle which left BOINCstats (#24) at the bottom. LITOMYSL (#25) had quite a lot of fun behind, being the silent spectator. The end of the field is led by Crystal Dream (#26) ahead of BOINC@Poland (#27) who didn’t seem to be true fans of the long track. Then follow SETIKAH (#28) who also had their weak point. BOINC Confederation (#29), U.S. Army (#30) and BOINC@Pfalz (#31) conclude the field of teams which started.
End of Part 1

The ninth BOINC Pentathlon is over
After two exciting weeks the ninth BOINC Pentathlon ended on 19 May 2018. 32 teams gave it their all in 5 disciplines.
A big thank you to the operators of this year's Pentathlon projects, as the competition would not have been possible without their support: NumberFields@home (Marathon), Universe@Home (Swimming), Rosetta@home (Sprint), Asteroids@home (City Run) and PrimeGrid (Cross Country).
We'd also like to thank all participants and are looking forward to seeing you again at the tenth BOINC Pentathlon starting on 05 May 2019.
For your convenience there is a feedback page for hints, criticisms, wishes and suggestions to take on board for the next time: https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/feedback.php?&lang=en.
Jeeper is now having a look at this year's Pentathlon results. All figures can be found here: https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/statistiken/pentathlon.php?&lang=en.
The End - Part 2
Before I start with the analysis I would like to thank Modesti and Susanne whole-heartedly. Modesti claims responsibility for the translations into French and Susanne for those into English. The translations contribute substantially to the enjoyment of the Pentathlon by crunchers on a global scale. Many thanks to you both for this work!
It’s not so easy to categorize this year’s Pentathlon. 5 teams collected medals, last year there were 6. SETI.USA were even more dominant than last year. However, it was never dull. This year, it was plain to see how gripping individual disciplines could be and that the Overall Standings don’t necessarily have to be all that matters.
32 Teams were at the start, amongst them three newcomers (Chinese Dream, LTT Forums and U.S. Army) who have put up a good show. At the disciplines, NumberFields@home made its debut on the stage. All projects endured throughout valiantly. A big thank you to those responsible for all their support throughout.
And now for the final analysis of the 9th BOINC Pentathlon. The rankings in brackets correspond to the sequence: Swimming (Universe@Home), Sprint (Rosetta@home), Cross Country (PrimeGrid), City Run (Asteroids@home), Marathon (NumberFields@home).
Gold Medal
1. SETI.USA (1-1-1-1-1) – previous year: #1
2940
There’s nothing left to write about. They cleared the lot. 5 times Gold, you can’t do better than that. The Americans entered the stage as dominant as we’ve never seen a team before and their victory in the overall standings was never really endangered. A strong start showing their competitors where the rubber hits the road and then controlling the situation, that was the successful tactic this year.

Too bad Jeeper didn't record that no team previously has placed 1st in all five disciplines, even though he did mention on behalf of Planet3DNow, "4 times Silver, no other team has ever managed this." But, maybe some team has won gold in all disciplines before. ???? He did report, "- SETI.USA have now got the most comprehensive collection with 35 Individual Medals, amongst them 15 x Gold"
