While I was trying to figure out a way to get some files to a friend I discovered some free online storage sites that have boat loads for space available. I am sure many have heard of DropBox (https://www.dropbox.com/) that gives you 2GBs of free sharable storage which is nice for pics and short videos and such and integrates well with Windows, Linux and Mac desktops. There are others with similar capacity but 2GBs is not enough for large files like system backups, homemade DVDs of the family vacation, etc...

Of the handful of sites that I found today, the two with the largest FREE storage are Adrive (http://www.adrive.com/plans) and Microsoft's Skydrive live (http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive).

Skydrive offers 25GBs of storage and is sharable Although sharing of files is limited to pictures, Office files and documents. Microsoft also limits the size of an uploaded file to 50MB.

Better still, Adrive offers a whopping 50GBs of storage with all that space available for sharing, regardless of file type or file size.

I used Adrive today and uploaded a file that was 970+ Megabytes in size.

Both Google and Amazon have something coming online too if it isn't already. online storage is the next push, and I have no idea why? can anyone tell me how they make money off this?

Probably by pawing through the stuff you put on their servers. :-|

I am very leery of these sites. Just because they offer you free storage, doesn't mean they won't be poking around in your files. I would recommend that anyone that is going to put ANYTHING of ANY PERSONAL nature WHATSOEVER on them, they better read the disclosure agreement very carefully before putting it out there.

NEVER STORE ANY USER NAMES OR PASSWORDS IN FILES THAT CONTAIN THIS TYPE OF INFORMATION ON ANY SITE THAT OFFERS FREE STORAGE.

If you're just using these sites for pictures and things of that nature, you'll probably be ok.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start an, "OMG" what will we do kinda thing here. I just want ppl to think before they do something that could harm them from identity fraud or some other such thing.

Porn is OKAY! Just make sure whatever you put out there has actors that are OBVIOUSLY over the age of 18 years!

That's all fine. Your only risk with that is if it's the unreleased videos of your mom with me and/or the goat. Those might get out...

Of course, the videos of you with my mom are already out there, so no need to worry about them.

I am not so concerned about the host site seeing my stuff. I am more concerned about them giving it to the government. They may even not want to, but be forced to do so under law or judge. PASS!

The 4th amendment was written for a reason.

Remember, if you can't say FUCK, you can't say FUCK THE GOVERNMENT.

There is a FAIRLY secure way around all that "We're rummaging through all your unmentionables......" Its called encryption. Say it with me, In-crip-shin. Now you try it by yourself. See, you can say it. I knew you could.

But what about the videos of me, our moms, the goat and the black Russian midget? Will the government "come" after me for those???

Online storage sounds great along with going paperless. But until computers get to the point where you can TRUST them I still like to have a "hard copy" of anything important I need.

As much as you all know from all the computers you have worked with they can fail at the worst times and if you don't have a backup you have to start all over. Pictures are one items you need to keep a "Hard Copy" of because once they are lost you only have the memory of them.

Then there is like some have said hackers that like to brake into computer systems and steal info or cause that system to crash.

Another thing to look at is does the "online" site have a backup plan? If their system go down will you lose your files?

I can see times when a online storage can be a great help if you are on the road and don't have room on your laptop to store a file you can store it online until you get home and then download it.

Very VERY true. One should always have "At home" backups of all his/her important data and hardcopies of "Never Lose These or your S-O-L" personal documents. Online storage for now is just a convenience to avoid having to dig up (keeping an eye out for little ol' ladies with spades....) a myriad of CDs & DVDs.
