Good point actually, I've been through the spammer issue a lot. vBulletin has a few good ways to limit them that should probably get implemented here.

What I do at Free-DC.

1. Human verification. There are options to add basic questions which must be answered by anyone registering.
2. reCaptcha - I think that's already on
3. Users must be accepted by administrators. They get an email first, then the admin must approve them.
4. I have all users going into a usergroup named Registered which is severely limited - no PM's, avatars etc etc. Automatic promotion to a 'members' group after a set # posts gives all the options.
5. Restrict post flooding by setting the option to force an X second/minute delay between posts. X is configurable.

There are a lot of options available :)
