View Full Version : SETI@Home: SETI@home hibernation

On March 31, the volunteer computing part of SETI@home will stop distributing work and will go into hibernation.

We're doing this for two reasons:

1) Scientifically, we're at the point of diminishing returns; basically, we've analyzed all the data we need for now.

2) It's a lot of work for us to manage the distributed processing of data. We need to focus on completing the back-end analysis (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/nebula/index.php) of the results we already have, and writing this up in a scientific journal paper.

However, SETI@home is not disappearing. The web site and the message boards will continue to operate. We hope that other UC Berkeley astronomers will find uses for the huge computing capabilities of SETI@home for SETI or related areas like cosmology and pulsar research. If this happens, SETI@home will start distributing work again. We'll keep you posted about this.

If you're currently running SETI@home on your computer, we encourage you to attach to other BOINC-based projects (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php) as well. Or use Science United (https://scienceunited.org) and sign up to do astronomy. You can stay attached to SETI@home, of course, but you won't get any jobs until we find new applications.

We're extremely grateful to all of our volunteers for supporting us in many ways during the past 20 years. Without you there would be no SETI@home. We're excited to finish up our original science project, and we look forward to what comes next.

doesn't give you much of a warning if you want to get something done over there.

I have just over 25M at both seti and seti beta. No way I would try to push for 50M MMs.

WRT wuprop hours, I already have over 100k at seti. The only possible improvement would be to take seti beta from 55k to 100k. But there is no work available at seti beta.

So I guess that's it for me and S@H.

Bitter-sweet news. Their pre-BOINC project is what got me started with distributed computing all those years ago, and I thank them for that. OTOH, the project was not run well and it soured for me over time.

P.S. I *really* wish it was possible to change a team name...

Since we can't change the team name, maybe we can change the meaning of SETI making it an acronym.

I notice our team is still in 2nd place, and SETI.Germany is in 3rd. :D

we are going to have a ton of members that probably are not going to know what to do after seti shuts down. might be a good time to help them move to a different project. we could inform them of the most stable projects, as a lot to them are set it and forget it users. if we don't try to help them they might just stop boinc all together.

There is a way to email all team members via the founder account on most projects. Of course I can't check that right now because the project is shut down for Tuesday maintenance.

Oh man. This is nuts to hear. Not sure if I should try to 5m or bail out. Was my first project as I assume for many others.

Did the quick math. No chance I can make 5m before the shut down. But, I will let all the WU's finish out that I have.

yea Al I know, just seems that every time I have brought up giving a notice to members I catch crap about spamming them. I think we need to give them a heads up, but not my decision.

How much too you need to get you to 5m? Something like 500k more? PM me your credentials, and I will help.

Same here! 18 years... probably half million hours of CPU and GPU time... can't say I'm sure where it all went :p

I think WCG would be a good one to steer that kind of crunching power to.

Let me work on a short message, with help from anyone that want's to help. :) WCG, Einstein, Universe or Asteroids might all be good projects. Possibly linking to this page (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php) might to a good idea also.

With the deadline fast approaching, I'd like to offer some GPU help to anyone who has a reachable MM goal in SETI for the next 10 days. Just PM me your login and I'm happy to help. I got mine to 15M and then backed off when I realized I couldn't get past that in time.

Like Zombie mentioned above, it was the original "Pre-BOINC" SETI crunching that got me into distributed computing. I was 17 up at university with a shiny new Pentium 200 MMX that I'd put together with all my saved up summer job money, and experiencing my first "real" always connected Internet. The university shared a single T1 pipe to the whole campus and we thought we'd gone to gamer heaven. Those were the days... :D

I'm going to put a few GPUs on it but I have to wait until sprint is over or it cools down a little, tomorrow at latest.

Quick question, when the WU,s comes to a end, do you think that the remaining WUs on your computers will still count.

I am not sure what the official plan is from SETI. But I would never count on things going to plan with that hot mess. I would not be surprised if the servers crash 3 days ahead of schedule, never to return. So I am pushing to hit the 25m goal ASAP.

Edit: And there it is. No work available. If it required human intervention to fix, probably no more new tasks until Monday.

Ok thanks. I tried to install 2 rx 580s but the server said no tasks available, i will give a go later.:(

Awesome! I just brought a 4th rig on from all my cobbled together parts, so hope it gets some work. Thanks again for all the help!

Well that got me thinking, so i put together frankenstein from old parts with a 980, windows update, NV update. Should be good to go in the next hour. 8-x

WOW! Man, This is wild. I hope we get enough work to pull this off. Never seen so many rigs on one account, let alone mine. :))

I did try to send a team message this evening and, of course, all I got back was a memory server error. No message was sent. Server problems will haunt you to the end with this project.

yea I bet it will and why shouldn't it, it's done it all its life, at least there was a try.
