Apparently I have been doing it wrong, when I mount radiators to the front.
TLDR: There is always some air in the loop. You want the air to pool in the radiator, not the pump. So make sure at least some of the radiator is higher than the pump when front-mounting. Also, make sure the high end of the radiator is the closed end, not the end with the tubes attached, to avoid the air pooling around the radiator connectors.
