View Full Version : Your first build
What was the first computer you ever built from scratch?
My first was a PIII 866MHz with 256 megs of RAM and a 10GB HDD. I dont even want to remember how much that cost me back then. :((

Mine was a generic 80286 using compatible parts from my dead IBM "True Blue" 8088 system. 1.5MB RAM (IIRC), 40MB RLL HDD w/Controller card, 1.44MB FDD, Cardinal VGA adapter & NEC Multisync 3D monitor.
Note: This was the first time I had experienced a woman becoming jealous of an inanimate object (my then wife).
80286 as well, replacing my custom shop built 8088 (I was only 9 when I got the 8088 lol). :D
Then two flavors of 386, 3 different 486s, P3 1GHz, so on and so forth.
Been putting off a build for 2 years now because of money.
Mega Millions is up to $29 million. Buy a ticket! ;)

I built an AM2+ quad a little over a year ago, for the simple fact that I wanted to keep up with the Joneses here, and found a cheap kit. That way, even if I screwed up completely, I wasn't out much. And it's still crunching. So I was successful...

Not meaning to hijack the thread - but I have a friend who calls that "paying his stupid tax" and he buys one whenever it goes over 10Mil...just because. :D
