View Full Version : Power conversion
Ok, I have a PSU that has a ton of SATA power cords but only 2 4 pin connections. I am looking for an adapter that will convert 2 SATA cords into a 6 pin for my video card........Anyone know where I can find these??

Like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812196870&cm_re=4_to_6_pin-_-12-196-870-_-Product)?

Actually, no, that is the standard molex to pci-e power.
What he needs is a sata to pci-e.
I think you will have to get a couple of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812198026&cm_re=sata_molex-_-12-198-026-_-Product
And then go from the molex out into the standard molex to pci-e power that Max linked to (and which you probably already have).
It may look a little ugly, but the card won't care; power is power! ;)

Not trying to step on any toes here......
I would be very careful about that. Many PSUs have multiple voltage rails to feed the various connectors. If your PSU is designed this way then the SATA connectors have a lower max current rating then standard molex. And using a SATA adapter setup would most likely fry the SATA voltage rail. Literally.
Edit: There is also a chance that the wires for SATA connectors are a smaller gauge wire which would further limit max usable current.

You're right - I misread the post.

Damn! Quick, someone write that on the calendar! ;) :o
@ F$ - could he find the rating of his SATA rail and see what the AMPs are? I see what you're getting at, but maybe for a smallish- GPU? ;)

using the SATA to Molex converters, i would only use 1 of the 2 Molex's from each converter for the Molex to 6pin converter. Also the sticker on the PSU should tell what the power rating of each rail is.

you can find this on ebay

Its not going to handle a Video Card though look at this for the science.

I think Dandasarges second link should be made a sticky in (the/a) Essential Hardware Info forum. Good stuff for sure!
