I hope to get my new build together sometime this week I have a question on HDD and SSD. I bought the ASUS P8Z68-V PRO MB and was going to go with 2 WD Caviar Black 640 in raid 0 that I had in my old build.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319&cm_re=wd_caviar_black_640gb-_-22-136-319-_-Product

I'm looking at the below drive or the Crucial RealSSD C300 64gb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148357

Western Digital Caviar Black WD2002FAEX 2TB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136792

The obvious storage space increase aside, (More space is always good :D ) in your opinion will the WD 2tb drive run/load noticeably faster than the 2 drives above in raid 0? Or would I be better off getting the SSD drive, running the os on it and using the 2 drives above in raid 0 for data?

This will be used to crunch but also as my household computer for movies, video, gaming, the net, etc.

If you want SSD then JPM would probably recommend one of these OCZ SATA III. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100008120%2050001550%20600038483%20600038519&IsNodeId=1&name=SATA%20III&Order=PRICE&Pagesize=20)

And for extra storage NewEgg has a special one a Hitatchi 2TB SATA III HDD (http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/May-0-2011/Memorialdaysale24/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL052411&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL052411-_-EMC-052411-Index-_-E0-_-PromoWord) $69.99 with Promo Code: EMCKEHF22 and before $10.00 MIR

I have bad luck with 32Gb SSD's... they fill up fast and once the partition is full... they can sometimes corrupt the MBR.

Go with a 64Gb SSD & 2Tb Hard drive while finding the best deal.

Nice to see more power coming online!

I have 5 X 500GB drives in Raid 5. Gives me 2TB in disk space with performance and redundancy. My max read is 470 MB/sec with an average of 350. It beats my SSD on throughput. The difference is seek times. SSD start reading data after a seek of .1 ms. My HD starts reading data at around 12 ms.

I have a 128 GB SSD for OS and a few applications and the raid for storage of movies, music, photos, etc.

Holy cow! ;) That is some serious data speed. I guess I only use mine for 24/7 crunchers now and basic surfing...so I just have a single Caviar Black, and it does the job. :o

I always thought that the best of both worlds is to have an SSD for the OS and a number of preferred HD's in RAID to meet your circumstances for backups, Music/Movies. It is in thought only for I am still planning to purchase an SSD when finance permits it.

It is the only way to go. The painful stuff was migrating my OS to the SSD. It boots real fast now. The reason I went to SSD for the OS is that in benchmarking the HD, I noticed sharp drops in performance, these are caused by the OS doing it's thing. Adding the SSD, gave me a nice HD performance curve.

I also have a large MYSQL database on my box that I do a bit of data mining on, so performance is every thing.

128GB SSD is the minimal for win 7 and a few apps. I think 256 would be the best, but they are sooooo expensive.

Thanks for the replies. With the threat of death looming I think I'll go with the 2TB WD linked above. It has good reviews and seems like it would be faster that the 2 640 in raid and meet all my storage needs. Now to sell the idea to my wife. A dishwasher will not work here. :p

Data Mining for work or fun?

In my experience, SSD is only good for read ops on db's. I keep a 4x Samsung Spinpoint SATA array in RAID 0 for performing infrequent transaction posting tests on my 30 Gb SQL Server DB.

Data Mining for a fun project. The SSD is for the OS. I have 5x 500 GB drives in a raid 5 for the database. It's nearing 1 TB.

So your saying the China would be used as a "Mike Tenderizer"?

Wow Max. A 10MB HDD was my very first HD. It was a seagate HD. I remember says how could I possible fill that up. On the HD idea it was dropped.~:> :(( I'm just going with the two 640 striped. :)

Thanks for the replies and Mike was not injured during the process. Well, maybe a little. :-$

I had two stripped disks. One failed and I lost everything. That's why I went to raid 5. Make sure you back up frequently.

Yeah, I have a external 1tb drive I use as a back up. I just have to do it more often.

Neato SSD (http://www.legitreviews.com/news/10851/) if you have a slot available. Should be very competitive price-wise and the speeds are decent.
