Looking for help to look into building a new webserver.

A few people have expressed interest in helping out given the recent problems and I've received a few donations overnight so have partial funding already. No great hurry anyway I'd like to get this right and you guys seem to get the builds pretty good.

Important part is I'd like 16Gb Ram, so it'll have to be DDR3 and likely 4x4Gb modules. CPU speed is unimportant. Graphics are unimportant etc. I should already have the drives here though one more might be good.

I'm thinking a Core i5/i7 but am open to any suggestions. Still going to play with the current XFX nForce 680i SLI mobo I already have that I seem to be getting SATA errors with whatever I try. Got a couple of suggestions over at Free-DC already like [url=http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=165440&CatId=6982]this one[url].

Thanks

I guess I need more info, You want a workstation class MB to use as your web server? and not a server class? Would save you some dollars but I want to confirm. Intel based? any extras this will be holding? raid controller or anything? How many SATA slots do you need? How big is your PSU?

Doesn't particularly need to be server class as long as it's robust.

At least 4 sata slots and I have a 550 or 600watt PSU which should be more than enough given it's not going to have a high end GPU at all?

No extra raid controller. I may or may not use onboard RAID. I'll have the other machine running as a backup webserver anyway and keep them rsync'd with some form of failover in place.

Instead of a new MB maybe think PCIe SATA controller card?

Appreciate it. I think the PSU's are good that I have and I have 2x750Gb WD Black drives as well as a bunch of smaller ones.

There is a paypal link on stats.free-dc.org down the left hand side of every page.

Thanks!

Good Point F$ nothing is more annoying then working with a faulty MB but a raid controller would fix hard drive issues as long as you don't have PCI-E issues aswell.

I'm all up for a new build.

Now if we can just talk you into running Video cards :)

What do you all think of this AMD Based build ? (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=602618&CatId=332)

Not that I'd really need the case or drives..

That MB has a good review rating at Newegg so it should be a fine choice. As for the hardware you don't need there is always eBay :D

I checked the pricing against Newegg (& TigerDirect for the parts NE doen't carry). This special is the cheapest way to get this parts combo.
If you just bought the hardware you wanted, MB + CPU + RAM + DVD Drive, then Newegg and Tiger price out the same at $351.96 before before shipping and Tiger's $20.00 Corsair rebate. But then you miss the chance of some eBay fun.........

I'm actually looking at this at the moment.. unless anyone can recommend something better/comparable.. ?

Mobo/Cpu (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.658260)

16Gb DDR3 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428)

Thoughts ?

Comes out to just under $500 and I've got close to $400 in paypal right now.

I did get a very generous offer from rgathright earlier on which I VERY much appreciated, but it wouldn't have worked as we figured out..

On a different note, the XP box I gutted for the current webserver was a VERY long standing box of mine which has been slowly working on my Chess960@Home 100K, think it has taken close to 4 years to get to 74K, alas without a 64bit client I'm stuck now :( Guess I could do a VM...

?? Are you talking windows? If so, I think you mean x86/32 bit. They have only a 32 bit app. You have to use an app_info.xml to get work on a 64 bit win machine.

I just gutted my old p4 with a Promise fastrak tx 2000 raid card. It's Ultra ATA/133 raid card.

I still have all the manuals and may even have the driver floppy if i look hard enough. :o

Looks good to me but I'm no expert. BTW: I hope you have already made your purchase as the G.Skills are now Out Of Stock :( You could always go Corsair......

Ugh, no, I'm not in a great hurry, waiting on everyones expert opinions first :) I Do see that Ram is out of stock now :(

Zombie, I did NOT know you could force Chess to work under 64bit, want to share that with me ? I'd have probably hit 100K by now if so :)

You could run it in a 32bit VM.

1) Attach your 64bit win machine to chess.
2) Quit BOINC
3) Get this and put the files into the chess project folder: https://files.me.com/zombie67/01arf5
4) Restart BOINC

Had a number of donations so am thinking of doing something even better.

What do you all think of this?

Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131665)

CPU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070)

Ram x3 (24Gb) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314)

This would actually be better than the current database server so would replace that and then I could use the mobo/cpu/ram from that as the webserver (i7 920 with 12Gb)

Not quite there yet, I've got about $500 or so in paypal right now so not too far away. Would you all change anything ?

Bok

p.s. I managed to get the broken webserver machine up and running with an IDE drive, put the GTX460 in it so it's at least crunching (on DrPop's PrimeGrid account so the points come here :) )

Just to throw it out there, this MB has better ratings (reviews) and is slightly cheaper after MIR: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131641

I noticed the CPU is socket 1155 and the motherboard is socket 1366. Unless i missed something, this won't work :/

joker
06-11-11, 06:25 PM
Wow, I didnt even look at that. I just assumed that it would be 1366. Time to do more shopping.

Hmm, I can't seem to find a 1155 mobo that has 6mem slots :(

There aren't any. Sandy Bridge only supports dual channel memory instead of triple. :(

Maybe??

MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128498

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231315
Or just stick with the memory you first picked.
I know it is not 24 but it is more then 12.

Edit after seeing JPMs post: Which makes one wonder if there was any real advantage to triple channel memory..........

Looks like a good option.

And I guess they'll take 8Gb Ram modules once they become widely available ??

Says it will support 32 Gigs so I am guessing yes. Lets see what JPM has to say.

John P. Myers

It should. Will probably only need a BIOS update at the most when the 8GBs are released.
