View Full Version : Grrrr...lost a card today

Guys, I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that with all the hardware failures I've had...this stuff isn't meant to be O/Ced and then ran hard 24/7! :D heh...

Lost the ASUS GTX 460 today. Got a hyper transport sync flood error, reboot and "hit F1 to continue" . . . and then a blank screen. Tried swaping out RAM, PSU, CPU...never even thought that issue would be a GPU failure, LOL! ;) Oh well. Popped another GPU in there, and we have lift off.

Out of the 3 GTX 460's I purchased at the same time, who would have thought the ASUS one would die first? Lots of variables, I know, but still...:p

Oh yeah...and a fan got totally frozen on that rig. Never seen that before, not sure what happened, because it was only a couple months old, but a case fan I put on the back - 120mm - was completely frozen and not spinning at all. I've had lots where they "go out" and get loud and stuff, and replace them, but this one was just like the inside motor parts melted or something maybe so it was stuck - weird.

EDIT: Not to mention my rig with the 5870 as the primary GPU now crashes anytime a video or even a flash website is viewed. :p I think the card is showing its age...even though not yet 1 year old! But run at 900/450 clocks, 24/7 for 10 months, I suppose these things happen... :D
Just to be safe with this hot weather, I have dropped my CPUs to stock settings, and looks like the CPUs are now 10C cooler under a load, which is worth it for longevity right now, I think!

Oh man...That sucks!

With all the money you "invested" in hardware this last year, I would be annoyed with these things...

I always run my HW at stock and with oversized coolers. I found - at least for me - that it the way to make HW last. (off course I also have the advantage of more cool weather overhere...)
Even on the hottest day of august here in Denmark, my CPU will not exceed 50*C in load!

I sympathize with you Dr Pop but I can tell you you are not on your own and those Gremlins are everywhere ready to destroy cards at their whim. I lost three Asus 5870's in the last three months and an Asus Motherboard. All under warranty. In the case of the GPU's, they all had fan problems. In one instance it just physically flew off the spindle and into the case. When I returned it they maintained that it was operator error and I must have damaged it. I am still waiting for the results of the other two similar problems, where one of the fans just stopped working, thereby overheating and switch off. In the case of the MB, less than three months old, I was told also that it had a physical damage caused by the user. I can tell you now that I have been building computers for over thirty years and I will not accept that the so called physical damage was caused by me installing the supplied cpu cooler to the board. The picture they showed me indicated that there was a discolouration around the four screw holes of the cooler. Most people would be aware that those four holes are electrically neutral to allow the screws to be fixed and therefore I can not accept that statement that it was user caused error. Since I am not in the position to fight them, I have advised them just how much ASUS gear I have purchased from them in the passed and do not expect another penny form me. Strange enough, I have a number of so called cheap GPU's both AMD and Nvidia makes that to date have not caused me problems.

By the way, I have learned that it is not cost effective to overclock especially in summer and I only do so at a specific time and for short durations as I have suffered many other HW failures that was out of warranty but I am sure it should have lasted longer..

I'm sorry to hear about your lost card. I do know of a machine where you have a spare one. Just let me know when to shut it off.

That's OK - I just robbed it out of the DrPop rig for now. :D I will call ASUS when I get a chance and see if they will warranty it - who knows, it's worth a shot. I am still trying to save the $ out to ship you the Twin there...maybe after I get my office lease paid this week. :p

@Cruncher Pete - yeah, I have decided that the 10C cooler running is worth downclocking the CPUs to stock settings. If I had water cooling it might be a different story. I've been overclocking rigs since the Pentium 120MHz :D but I have never run crunching loads i.e. 100% load for 24/7 operation until this last year.
