View Full Version : Build a maximum cruncher on a budget - a challenge..

Hey there team...

Hereīs a little challenge I have been thinking about for some time...We have some very HW skilled members on this team - so this goes out to those....

Given a certain amount of money, build the best overall cruncher creditwise.

I propose 3 categories:

1. 400$
2. 400-800$
3. Above 800$

The "rules" are that you must keep the budget while setting a build for maximum credits.

Any takers???

One question? Is this meant to be an entirely new build? Or is this to be one that will scavenge parts from another machine (or spare parts lying around)?

Well I would say that spare optical drives and HD is OK. Most of us probably have a HD lying somewhere...:p

I could do this to use an HD 5450 instead of the HD 6950 and put a slightly more on memory. Is it possible? Can I use:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-M68MT-S2 - $44.99

CPU: AMD A4-3300 Llano 2.5GHz Socket FM1 65W Dual-Core - $59.99

PSU: RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-730SS 730W - $59.99

RAM: Crucial Ballistix sport 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 - $21.99 ++

GPU Radeon HD 5450

Or is anything wrong in this configuration. Sorry for Hijacking the Thread. Can someone help me in this? Maybe the PSU needed could be cheaper also.
I dont think the HD 5450 needs so much power.

Yes if you wanted more memory than that could be a decent compromise. Note that the HD 54xx cards are not double precision (DP). For the 5xxx family only the 58xx & 59xx are DP. This just means that you can't use that card on MW. I think there might be another project that requires DP but the name escapes me.

Christopher Herr (CH) sent me this HD 5450 and I have used in another lend computer for a small while. Because I have tried in my computer and just dont crunch.

This last time (today) I cant enter Linux because I tried to force the instalation of the drivers and now I dont know how to recover from that. Good Linux but a slight complicated on command line. It is good for starting GPU crunching for a no money Duke and wait for better times.

Can you only tell me what kind of 4G memories I could buy in a good price.

Hey Duke,

Triggl, zombie and others may be able to help with your broken Linux. I use Ubuntu but do not know enough to be of use other than to say that my solution would be to reinstall. But that would mean you would lose all docs and pics that you have stored on you computer.

For the RAM question, what kind of memory does your system need? A better question might be, what kind of system or motherboard do you have?

Thatīs awesome! Any estimates on expected output of such a budget cruncher?

I can't think of anything that would get you hundreds of thousands of credits per day like this would, for the price. What do you think?

@ F$ My Linux has no problem is working fine now, after a lot of work on the command line. I managed to restore the drivers I had uninstalled. I am starting to get very good at Linux since there is a good parallel with DOS. Man I am so happy I could do it by myself.

Many thanks for your help on this matter F$ and sorry to all of you for hijacking the thread for this bit.

Ok, I give my two cents worth.....

DO NOT USE YELLOW FOR ANY FONT ON A WHITE BACKGROUND! IT IS UNREADABLE! Please stick to dark colors on a light colored background.

As far as anything else...well hmm, I haven't been out pricing stuff and when I do, I don't build cheap, but this does sound like a fun thread!

Ah, so you use the default forum theme? I posted based on the dark theme I use. Oh well...... Noted for future reference.

lol

I use the 'carbon' theme myself. closest thing to the old boards. Yellow looks great

I'm noticing we don't have to pick out a case for this build? Hmmmm....i'll give it a shot a bit later

Nope, that was omitted by Beerdrinker. I think the presumption is that a case is already in hand.

This posting (http://usa.lanex.com/?page_id=163) appears to be from the April/May time frame from the mention of April in the posting, I thought it was informative.
