For anyone wanting to build a multi-core, PrimeGrid crunching machine, the AMD Opteron 6172 12 core processor is now selling for a little as $445 on Ebay.

Prices have never been this low and in fact, the processor has been shown to be faster than the newer AMD Opteron 6272 16 core cpu.

I only bring this up because some members have been PM'ing me lately for bulldozer build advice. I don't like the highly anticipated 16 core bulldozer and I am sure some other team members may have even more to say about it! ;)

Here is your Ebay 12 core bargain shopping list, I recommend any of the following in 1x or 2x combo:
AMD Opteron 6172
AMD Opteron 6174
AMD Opteron 6176

I agree that it is a decent processor. I have a dual Opteron 6172 server w/ 24GB RAM that kicks butt. It is good for 40-70K per day on CPU alone depending upon the project.

Holy smokes! That is a lot of CPU crunching from one rig. :) Very nice.

There used to be a couple boxes on AQUA that had quad 6172 processors and were getting over 150K on CPU alone!

Is that just the cpu?

I've been thinking of pulling the plug on interlagos, but it is pricey. I was going to wait until the Intel SB xeons come out to see if prices drop for AMD.

Holey Toledo! Watch our for the Cap'n ... he's BBBBAAAAAAAAACCCCCKKKKK!!! :D Oh man, I've thought long and hard about one of those systems several times. The CPU performance for Challenges is amazing. It's always such a toss up in my mind whether to have more GPU power (for higher points/day) or more CPU power - to kick butt on the challenges, because that's always SO FUN!

Enjoy the new hardware, man! Can't wait to hear about the good stuff. Really rocks for SIMAP and RNA, and Primaboinca to name a few projects that favor the AMD architecture a little. I think DiRT does quite well on the AMDs as well. ;)

Here comes the help!

First, I have a Thermaltake Socket G34 heatsink that I can mail you. PM your address to me and it's yours.
Here is my review of it:http://www.bayreviews.com/computers/22278-thermaltake-g34-cpu-cooler

Second, I write reviews of about 20% of my computer hardware. Luckily for you, my Opteron system has reviews and photos of the configuration online!
Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced Case (http://www.bayreviews.com/computers/22863-cm-haf932-advanced-case)
Cooler Master Excalibur 120MM Cooling Fan (http://www.bayreviews.com/accessories/23742-cm-excalibur-fan)

Finally, the best way to get started on your build is with the RIGHT POWER SUPPLY. The Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W comes with 2x 8 pin motherboard power leads. Most PSU's do not.

Way to go!! Spec. it out for us. I've always wanted to build one I just have no need for it. lol Can't wait to see your build.

I have a question on these systems, If I bought a dual cpu board could I buy only one cpu for now then add another later or you need to start with two?

Wow! Great deals! My 6174 rig outperforms or is about equal to my 6274 rig on every project I have tried so far. I would definitely recommend the 6100s OVER the 6200s. The 6274s somehow manage to draw more power on top of it. Can you tell how happy I am with interlagos:mad:

If the MBs were not so pricy I would go for a quad 6274 rig!

Edit: @ Mike, yes I started all of mine with just one CPU, I am running three of the ASUS KGPE-D16 boards which can also hold two GPUs with an extra space for good air flow.

I did this on my ASUS KGPE-D16 until I finally added the second CPU. :)

What OS do you run on such a beast? Can my kid play blackops on it if he wants? I already know the answer to my next question but I'll ask it anyways. My wife can't serf the internet or look at facebook, right?

I believe Win7 Pro and higher support dual CPUs. Anything above two requires Windows Server. I believe anything above 4 requires the Server Enterprise edition. In this case, even though there are 6 cores w/ hyperthreading which will appear as 12 CPUs in task manager, they count as one CPU for licensing purposes.

Well the board is Windows 7 compatible. I use Windows Server OS on it though.

Some l33t hardware guru named Bikermatt left this review about ASUS KGPE-D16 on Newegg.

Pros: I have two of these boards and they have been rock solid for over a year running both Linux and Win7 24/7. Support multiple GPUs. Room for the Nocturna 92mm CPU coolers which run silent at full load.

Cons: A little pricey for no on board raid.

Other Thoughts: With a lot of Bios searching I found out why my boards were not booting with my new 6274s. I am running non ECC ram in my machines and it seems that the 2005 bios automatically defaults to ECC ram. For some reason the boards would boot this way with the 6174s but not the 6274. After disabling ECC ram the system is now running great with my 6274s! I have been very happy with these motherboards and might just by another for the 6172s that now have no home.

Hahaha... I'm no novice having built my first system around 1988. It was a 286 to replace the IBM "True Blue" I fried when I dropped a PCI slot cover screw on the MB while it was powered up. It can still take me many hours to build a system depending on how creative I need to be with the innards.......
