... that if you left it alone and stopped with the tweaking, experimenting and updating it might all work out better?

I just suspended most of my boincsimap WUs to ensure the one's with higher progress got crunched first. Of course I then proceeded to put my car on charge, clear some snow, harvest my comquats and watch the 3rd in the Alien scifi series to come back to an idle list of WUs. It's not the frst time that I've done this in various projects and not the first that the "I must come back in an hour" mental note just didn't work X_X Ahhhhrrrrrrgggggggg!!!!

That is pretty much how I do it.

I only tweak things once you bleeding edge experts work out the kinks and report it as a solid reason to go through the effort of possibly causing mayhem to gain that advantage against the other teams.

I will say that these efforts on the adventurous and more knowledgeable members part have led to significant gains for me and I am sure other members of Seti.USA who take the time to read the forums.

So thanks for putting yourself through hell for the benefit of the team!

LOL! I have to be very careful not to let that happen as well, because I have some tasks disabled on my X6 core rigs so they won't go into "freak mode" and crunch a little bit of every one! :p
I'm just glad I have a few more WUs this time, or I'd be out of WUs already, just like Dad's i7...just think, we could have gotten another day and a half out of his rig! :P Oh well, next time...

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic...

...don't you think

Correct!

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

I have a script to take care of this sort of thing when I take the time to use it. It suspends all tasks but the ones running. When one finishes it resumes the next. I can set it for any number of active work units, so I could set it to resume the number of threads +1. If more work got downloaded it would suspend those also. It's a script for a Linux Gentoo install, but I'm sure it could be easily translated to other distros or even windows.

I just wish I could select a WU in boincmgr and it would crunch it to completion before going on to another WU of its choice. If I have a partially completed WU I want to have an option to choose to finish it, not for boincmgr to crunch some other WU. In a competition this might be to finish WUs sooner, or to finish WUs before a need to shut down for whatever reason.
