I was given a "dead" Gateway with a AMD 5000+ Dual Core processor that I'm rebuilding for the in-laws. It has built-in video which is an nVidia 6000 series that can't crunch, but it has an empty PCI express x16 slot. The gotcha is that the PSU is only 300 watts. Apart from my old 8400 GS which I know will work, are there any other GPUs that will crunch that don't require a 450W or higher PSU? I'd rather not spend several hundred dollars on a PSU and GPU combo for a machine that isn't worth more than $200 to start with.

The Ati 4650 can crunch Collatz on a 300W PSU. I have done it.

On the Nvidia side there is card like the 430GT and 440GT. They do not require 6-pin power and will run fine on a 300W.

I would puy my money on the 440GT. Thatīs a 75.000 card on PG, and possible 100K on dirt.

But don't forget the PCI solution JPM turned us on to...

nVidia/ZOTAC ZT-50610-10L GeForce GT 520 (Fermi) - $59.99 + $6.95 Shipping (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500228))

For only $15 more, the 440 GT has double the stream processors as the GT 520. Unless the 520 is double precision and the 440 isn't, I would expect the 440 to get about double the credits as it is the same speed otherwise. On the other hand... the box has both a PCI and a PCI Express slot open, so now the question is whether one could run both on a 300W PSU. My guess is no.

I could not find anything that would beat the GT440.

My guess is no.

I'd say you are correct.

Here are two PSU options to consider...

Also if there is a Micro Center store near you check out their in-store deals. Micro Center always has a bunch of cases laying around with really low price tags. Many are returns or store display units but they make for good parts scavenging and modding projects.

@Slicker - if it's much better I could send you the 8800GT that Pwrguru sent me for the project server, and you could send me the smaller 8400 to throw in the server since we can't crunch on it. Just a thought if the output would be worth it?
