View Full Version : Anyone have a cheap GPU that will crunch with a 450w PSU

With my x6 just built, there is an open PCI-e x16 slot that I can fill with a GPU if anyone has a cheap or free one lying around. The build only came with a 450w PSU and only one PCI-e power plug at the moment. If necessary I can change the PSU to a 550w that I have in the closet. Since I'm using this to replace two older machines it is already drastically increasing my output but will be even better if I can get a GPU to put in there.

I've got nothing at the moment. I'll ask around.
Don't have a GPU to offer, but I can say that my main rig here at home was running with a 430W PSU and was fine with both a 9600GT and a 5770 at different points in its' life. Q6600 and an ASUS P5K Deluxe Mobo with 6 Gig RAM. Dual HD and even 2 DVD Drives as well. So I'd say you could easily support at least a 5770 with that thing if one comes up.

OK, I have something if you are interested. Since Mike let me have the 4870 that I resurrected, my 4850 has nowhere to go as I have shutdown the system it was in. Would this 4850 meet your expectations?

WOOT! Way to go F$! :D Love it when everyone pulls together for the team, thank you both. This is going to rock the output of the two older rigs you're retiring! :)

\m/ Rock On! Got it today, immediately underwent shutting down and installing rather than eating dinner. Got it up and running with CCC 12.1. Went into AMD Overdrive and upp'd the GPU clock to 675mhz and memory clock to 1000mhz. Currently running moo w/fan speed @ 58% and holding at 60C so we'll see how much it adds to production by tomorrow morning :D
Sweet! :D If you're "dangerous" you can try bumping that MHz up toward the 800MHz level (that's the highest I ever pushed the 4870s I had), and you can drop the memory clock as low as you want to help with less heat in the case...AWESOME addition to your farm, sir!

I sent him a 4850 so the highest stable clock is 700Mhz. Also for Moo I believe you can drop the Mem. Clock to 800Mhz. It won't effect crunch time but it will reduce RAM temps at least 5C.
Happy Crunching!!! :-bd

You can drop that puppy on Milk for the next few hours and pick up the double stones.

It has actually been on Milkyway for most of the day because last night Moo was down after it d/l'd one wu. Then I figured out when I woke up this morning that MW was better credit for now and left it there.

Now that the double credits are over see if you can get it to run on Donate-at-home for max credits. If not Milk may be your best bet even over Moo. If your having heat issues Collatz is the place to be.

Thankx for this useful info. How about PrimeGrid for GPU? How does it stack up against the above?

For now I put it on Moo because MW was giving me issues w/connecting to localhost.

If you are running an Nvidia card I believe it is the PPS Sieve wu's that are GPU capable?

It all depends upon the type of GPU. If using AMD GPUs, Moo is still the best. If nVidia, PG works well. DiRT is good - if you can get work.
My DiRT saga: The DiRT server refuses to send one of my hosts work. Even after the admins reset the counters in the database, the server decided I had maxed out my WUs for the day even though I haven't recevied any for several days. Yet, the admins also actually believe that 7.0.7 is "stable" even though it shares the same code as the BOINC client which and all 7.x.x version of the client are considered experimental. If I only had a bridge to sell them.....

Big Thanks, Duke..
@Slicker,
I was able to get Cuda work from DiRT by detaching and then attaching. Resetting did not work. I'm still not getting any cpu work on any box.
No DiRT CPU work either for me. Running DiRT CUDA WUs on the Hydra (Cheetah's) GTX 460s.

yeah seems like from what i read if you had a cpu wu running before there update it will hang so hopefully once the wu times out on there end we will be able to get work again atleast im being hopeful. only got two of my nvidia working dont know how i lucked out on that one but the other one is stuck on the cpu wu maybe reinstallnig boinc will reset the computer id number or worst case rename the box then reinstall boinc might fix it also but i got to many computers to go through all that atm..
