View Full Version : The new PPS(sieve) tasks for new app are out (sort of) [cpu/gpu]

They are hard to come by, but there are new PPS(sieve) tasks out for the new app. There are cpu and gpu apps out. So far, it looks like the gpu/cuda app works well enough, but it appears the credits awarded are less than before per time crunched. A word of warning: the last cpu app tasks I tried for linux error-ed out complaining of an invalid "T" option. Anyways, since the last challenge of the year uses this subproject, I thought I would do some test runs. My gpu(cuda) tasks seem to be doing ok. Will post an update when the Linux CPU app gets stable.

Update:

All CPU apps have been pulled until they are fixed. The -T flag forces use of the new tpsieve version. This will help prevent any app_info users from mistakenly using ppsieve which would only produce +1 factors. tpsieve is producing +1 AND -1 factors.

We do not yet have Mac version of any of the apps. However, that should be resolved in the next couple of days.

As for credit, adjustments will be made as necessary...which means yes, they will be increasing.

Update: for the cuda app, a task takes about as long as a dnetc task and the credit is 600 per.

We're going to have our hands full at this next challenge. There's apparently also an ATI app. We're going to need every GPU we can get our hands on.

Where to you see that? Is it a manual install?

I think it's all automatic considering it's a new app. I know the cuda app is released. There is an active thread in the PPS sub-project forum at Primegrid.

It looks to me that they aren't spitting out ATI WUs right now... Is that what other folks are seeing? I mean, I tried earlier today and got nothing...

I'm not getting any work from them ATI or cpu.

11/21/2010 4:50:54 PM PrimeGrid Message from server: _("No work available for the applications you have selected. Please check your project preferences on the web site.")

I picked the PPS Sieve. I'll try resetting the project as the main page says there is 14k of wu's sitting there.

resetting did not work still not getting any wu's . Also if there is anything I have to do to allow my ATI card to cruch I'm going to need a bit of help. If anyone has this running on their ATI cards let me know. My box is running vista ultimate 64

BOINC is not asking for any GPU work. Did you remember to turn on CUDA or ATI on in your project preferences?

Yup,

Resource share

Well at least this time, your machine is actually requesting GPU work.

FWIW, I am getting CUDA work with no problem. It may be that there is no work for ATI.

It's saying no cpu or gpu work. Strange. I'm sure it's something on my end unless someone else is seeing the same thing.

It's not on your end. For this sub-project, there is no CPU app at this time. The apps are for GPUs only.

I was going through the PG forum and came across a thread here (http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=2742) for an all inclusive app_info.xml file for use on Linux 64bit & Windows 64bit systems.

Started running the new app today and just finished my first two wu's.

Task 203349521 (http://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=203349521) = 1,800 CS

I'm a very happy camper :D TY trigggl

Wow that all looked like Chinese to me. I'm running a ATI card could someone post a little "how to" guide for me? That explains why I'm not getting any wu's. I tried copying an xml file to the directory but must have done something wrong cause it would get stuck at d'ling. I detached and reset pg and now I'm back to the "no work available" crap. Thanks for any help you can give. Really want the sorted out before the challenge starts. I'm sure I'm not the only guy have a problem.

The app_info file is not built for the ATI app - it would only include the CUDA app for PPS Sieve and the CPU app for all other projects. So not worth the effort to install it...

20-22 minutes for 1800 credits is what I'm seeing.

I've been very slowly working on a 10M goal in PG, but since my 9800 GTX+ can earn over 100K/day on the CUDA app, I've switched that GPU over to PG since it is the best paying CUDA project at the moment AFAIK.

Your 9800 can do tasks in 22 min? Mine takes an hour. Is there something that special about the GTX+ or could my bus/ram speed be a factor?

I just moved my gtx260 over to work on the cuda tasks looks like it takes 19-20 mins / task

this is the host http://www.primegrid.com/show_host_detail.php?hostid=162940 . CPU is running AQUA.

Regardless, PG is the best bang for the buck for CUDA right now.

No argument there. I'm now at 48 min.

I noticed some zombie processes when I just did my updates this morning. I had boinc stopped, but there were about 5 processes still going even though the tasks weren't even on the computer anymore. I had to kill them to restart the nvidia driver.

My sons Ati 5670 is doing PG WU´s in about 40-45 mins @ 1800CS......That particular card gets 15-20% more points at Collatz vs PG.

Conclusion:

If you wanna run PG, be sure to go CUDA!

A single one runs at 98% GPU utilization, so I don't know that you would benefit from swapping back and forth.

I posted here (http://setiusa.free-dc.org/vbforum/showthread.php?331-Getting-the-PPSieve-WUs-to-run-on-ATI-cards&p=2155&viewfull=1#post2155) about that although I never stated my observations. For my HD 4850 when running two wu's the total time for each wu increased dramatically. Memory tells me the time almost doubled for each wu, over an hour per wu. Not worth the effort since crunching a single wu took approx. 28 minutes IIRC.
