These new supercomputers deal in Exaflops, and is said to be able to do the computing of 50,000,000 laptops. With computers like the Jaguar and the K computer, why do they need us?

Option 1: Spend millions on a super computer, the data center to house it, and the power for running and cooling it

Option 2: Setting up Linux server for less than $2K and letting thousands of volunteers pay for the rest while giving them useless credits or badges for their efforts (and people wonder why they are part of the 99% -- duh!)

There are a whole lot more of us then those monsters. I can't imagine that our willingness (in the millions) would be snubbed.

Even if they make 5 or 6 of those super fast systems, remember, we outnumber them and our systems are also getting faster. And ours don't cost billions of dollars... my first computer ran at a blazing fast 1.4 MHz... and was an 8-bit system... now we're using systems running over 1000 times that fast and these new ones are 64 bit and multi-processing... I can see that in the near future, personal systems will run even that much faster! :-bd

The reason is because to run one of those cost - in electricity alone - the same as running 10,000 homes! I kid you not - that is the stats for the fastest super computer in Japan at least. Which one of these projects could afford that?:confused::p
