The Linux distribution actually gets its name from the penguin of the same name. If you've seen Mr. Popper's Penguins (http://americanhumaneblog.org/2011/06/the-real-star-of-mr-poppers-penguins-jim-carrey-or-the-gentoo/), you've seen them.
I guess the developers of Gentoo decided to name their distro after the coolest penguins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentoo_Penguin) around.

Quick question: How long do you think it would take Gentoo to compile on a Pentium M @1.7Ghz?

With me doing it on my home network, about 2 days with full Gnome desktop. With no distcc help, probably 4 days. If you don't care about Gnome, you could probably get it done in 2 regardless. It can be sped up by installing some binaries such as Firefox, but if you want 64-bit and flash, you would want the compiled version of Firefox. If it's for crunching only, forget Firefox.
I guess if the goal is GPU crunching, I'd give it 4 days. Start up cost, time wise, is large, but it's a real time distro after that. For a first time install doing it by yourself and taking your time (which is what you should do on the first time) I'd be on the patient side and allot a week.
So, the quick answer is "days". I don't remember how long it took me on the RS/6000 which is single core 400MHz, but it couldn't have been more than a week.
Probably not the answer you were looking for.

No, that's fine. My thing is I absolutely HATE Unity. It is an atrocity. At least for desktops. They should have given it as an option during install. Now you have to dick around to get gnome installed only Gnome is going down a similar path..... Gawd! Why do all these formally innovative software devs now wish to be M$ clones.....?
Anyone remember the Stepford Wives?
