I can't seem to get more than 8 wu's at a shot on my 24 core server.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

AMD Opteron 6174s (2)
Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit
64 GB Ram

Frustrating!

I think 8 is the limit as I tried it on a VM and set ncpus to 16. Only 8 wu's downloaded. Maybe Tobias is trying to limited the load on the server...?

Thanks F$.

I had the same problem prior to the server seizure as well.

So I hope that is is as I felt like I was being shortchanged.

There are two settings in the config.xml on the BOINC server that control the # of WUs users are allowed. There is <max_wus_in_progress> which controls the total WUs a machine is allowed. There is also <max_ncpus> which controls limits the CPUs and I believe the default is 8. You can always PM the admin and ask him to increase it. You'll need a machine with more than 8 real cores to convince him though. The limits are there so people can't spoof the system and pretend they have 128 CPUs or something and hog all the work if it is in short supply (e.g. SIMAP) or download so much work that most will be aborted because they will never finish it before the deadline.

Worse here, it seems I cannot change the settings any more and just get one - per rig. No dedicated effort on my part though since I once decided HAL is set or forget. :D

Ed: Fixed now. Preferences are back online. So that's about keeping resolutions. :P

I just found something I didn't know on FreeHal. I normally run the NCI wu and 1 per core. I have 2 old dual Xeon servers that I use purely for feeding GPUs but for the past couple of days I've been running them CI @ 1 per core. Today I decided I was going to turn off hyper threading on one of the machines and do a crunching comparison. When you do that you have to uninstall/reinstall BOINC or it will continue to run the same number of WU as before.

When I reattached to FreeHal it started downloading WUs just like a regular project. It got to 200 WU and then went into high priority mode!!!! I guess if you have ever run the FreeHal NCI which only downloads the same number of WU as threads then even switching to CI doesn't change that. If you do a clean install of BOINC (delete the directory) then FreeHal CI works like a normal project! Interesting.
