I let my dog outside one last time before bed, and she found a skunk. Now she smells like skunk, I smell like skunk, and my whole house smells like skunk. Between chundering events, I went out and got some peroxide and baking soda, and did what I can.

This is the first one of these events for me. FWIW, the smell you get along the road, when a skunk has been run over, that is *NOTHING*. The up-close, fresh, sticks to everything smell will make you wish you were dead. That is not exaggeration.

Question: How long until the smell outside the house goes away? The event happened about a yard away from the side of the house.

$1B idea: This is obviously a chemical problem. Surely someone could develop some kind of spray the alters the substance, and not be harmful to pets. If there was a "windex" bottle on the shelf in the store that would solve this, I would have paid $100 per, without blinking. And I would have bought enough to spray my dog, the infected area, and several areas inside my house. And double that, so I could have a batch sitting on my shelf for the inevitable next time. $1000? I would have paid that and thought I was getting away with the best deal of the century. Seriously. Why does this product not exist?!

Have you tried bleach on the spot outside?

I feel your pain. A couple years ago, our dog got into it with a skunk and we didn't realize it before letting him into the house (he came running in from across the yard). He then rolled around on the carpet and against the couch to try and rub the smell off himself. The house literally stunk for a month. You could still smell it when you got home from work two months later. For the dog, we gave him 3 baths a day for over a week. Even then he still smelled when you got close to him. Tomato, dog shampoo, peroxide, we tried it all. My wife finally started spritzing him with fabreeze. That helped a little but he didn't like it very much. It could have been worse. The neighbor's boxer got sprayed 3 times last year alone. Proof that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Going over the how-to tips on the net a few things stand out

Rubber Gloves. Use one new pair for every wash and rinse dog with bare hands. This keeps you from re-contaminating your dog.

Hydrogen Peroxide. Will bleach your dog's fur, period. Use only new bottles as hydrogen peroxide loses potency over time.

Puralube Vet Ointment. Use this eye lubricant or mineral oil to protect your pet's eyes. One or two drops in each eye should do it.

Note: many how-to's suggest using dish soap. I disagree. All dish soap contains salt which can cause excessive drying of skin. Use a decent brand of pet shampoo instead.

Go online to Mythbusters and see if you can locate the episode where they tested stuff to neutralize skunk odor. IIRC there were actually some things that did work well.

Did those things that actually worked include blowing the pet animal up??! Just asking, as the Mythbusters never seem to get along without blowing stuff up... :p
I love animals, grew up with dogs and still own a 18+ year old male cat, BTW, so I would never condone hurting animals!
When driving in my car and see one in the headlights at night , no matter how small, I ALWAYS try my very best to "throw the anchor" in time. I could not look into the mirror anymore after having deliberately smashed or hurt an animal.

The hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/dish soap worked okay. It took several baths with it, and 48 hours later, it was down to "tolerable". It took 3-4 weeks before I could not smell it at all, close up.

Man, that's just bad! :( Oh, did you try any of the tomato? I've always been curious is that really worked or not - tomato sauce or the juice of whatever. Anyway, glad it's finally getting tolerable! That is a loooooong time to smell skunk.:-s

I bite you if you take the tomato to make sauce and throw the sauce at me.
Do you think I am spaghetti?

Thanks Duke, this way the sauce is much better and the wine is wonderful.
