dual gpu crunching [Archive]

i just hooked up the sli cable. in the nvidia settings its set to "all" in the cuda section i see nothing that says to turn on sli. restarted and still only crunching 1 workunit. this is on dirt. what am i doing wrong?

You can try forcing BOINC to use both GPUs by adding <use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus> to your cc_config.xml file.

Hmmm... Maybe the file properties are set to read only? If so uncheck the read only box and then click the OK button.

ive got 3 cards here to crunch thanks to pwrguru. i just rcvd my new 650w psu so tonights the night any info you guys can add today for me to reference to i appreciate this team has allways been an absolute help and i appreciate that more than you guys know!

Hmmmm.... OK download the attachment and rename it by changing .zip to .xml then copy it to your BOINC Data folder. If you have a cc_config file there already then select to overwrite it when prompted by Windows.

read only box is unchecked. guess i reinstall latest driver next. this is a win7 os 64 bit

You are trying to open the file I attached? If so then that won't work. You need to rename it from cc_config.zip to cc_config.xml. I just changed the the file extension as it was faster then running it through WinZip.

i need easier than that where do i find the tools folder? on my homepage there is a tools tab but no folder options. win 7 64 bit

@firestorm ok its back to .xml and i dont know what your talking about running it through winzip.. i just went to the boinc folder area and hit "new" and made a folder.

i know im an idiot but just one step at a time all i know how to do is play games and run a virus program lol i never learned beyond that.

if you look at the boinc folder all those files should have mostly .xml at the end if you dont see that then hide extensions is checked.

uncheck hide extensions****
uncheck hide protected operating****

(once your done with the changes i would put these back the way they were to avoid the kids from deleting something by accident)

wow i was hoping it was just an extension problem... hmmm.. im not sure at this point i would have to see what your boinc event log is saying,... shutdown boinc and restart it.. then open up the boinc manager click on (advanced) and click on (even logs) click copy all and paste that stuff here and lets see what it says...

Open the file with notepad and make all that you want and then save as .xml.

You are opening the file as a .xml and have no editor to that type of file so it is opening with Internet Explorer and you can not edit the Internet Explorer, isn't it GregK?

yeah ouch i forgot about the paste issue... See that sounds like something in windows settings isnt working corectly or your right mouse button is fubard. Ok lets try something dif since you have win 7 open the start menu and go to accessories and click on snipping tools. That is the app i used earlier to give you those pictures so you should be able to make a box of the area you want to take a snap shot of boincs logs and save that pic to your desktop. Then you should be able to upload the image using the (insert image) icon when you reply to this post.

as for not having the option to paste when you right click i have not a clue were to take you on that one.. maybe mouse settings in the control panel or maybe try another mouse if you have one.

The event log has its own copy and paste feature...the windows copy and paste via right clicking does not work. Open the event log and the copy for that page is at the bottom right. You can copy the whole log or selected portions. Then just paste it into a post.

Greg go online and make sure you connected the sli cable to the right spots....then unistall the nvidia drivers and reinstall them... Install evga percision after that and make sure your computer is seeing both cards...

The first problem is it isn't finding a config file, which I'm pretty sure is required to run more than 1 gpu. You need the cc_config.xml in the boinc directory. You have to fix that before you can really go any farther.

@ pwrguru i have 6 drivers and updates related to nvidia 306.97 ,audio, vision , vision controler ect. do you mean just the 2 306.97 drivers? im using msi afterburner is that ok? do you want me to uninstall it too and reinstall?

Hmmmm.... OK download the attachment and rename it by changing .zip to .xml then copy it to your BOINC Data folder. If you have a cc_config file there already then select to overwrite it when prompted by Windows.

The configuration is read from a file cc_config.xml. If this file is absent, the default configuration is used. To create or edit the file, use a text editor such as Notepad, and save it as cc_config.xml in your BOINC data directory. BOINC does not use standard XML. Putting comments in the file will cause errors.

If you edit the configuration file while BOINC is running, the changes will take effect only if you select the Advanced / Read config file menu item.

Warning: Any changes in the <log_flags> section will be used immediately after re-read of the config file. Yet a lot of changes in the <options> section will need a complete exit and restart of the BOINC client. They will not take if you just re-read the config file.

yeah boinc isnt seeing the cc_config.xml file..

use that file from Fire$torm your gonna need to save it or copy it to your (C:\ProgramData\Boinc) folder.
then you have to rename it from cc_config.zip to cc_config.xml

why i had you uncheck hide extension so you could see the .zip part and rename it to .xml I think windows will complain about changing it but just say yes (LMAO)

then see if the second gpu shows up in your logs.

You need to open the file in notepad and delete everything before , <cc_config> including ALL hyphens "-"....these are formatting errors.

Then save it again. You don't want that xml version stuff in the saved file.

Open notepad copy the cc_config into there and then save it on C:\ProgramData\BOINC.

I had exactly the same problem long time ago when I started crunching in this computer with windows7.

Please do as I told you and then if you can not crunch and you have the same error come here and call me a lot of names.

I hope you did understood.

1 - Open notepad
2 - Copy the code for the file from the forum into the notepad without <?xml version="1.0"?>.
3 - Save the file as cc_config.xml on C:\ProgramData\BOINC
4 - Restart the computer

Good catch coronicus. Greg, right click the file and open with notepad. There is obviously something wrong with the file, so you need to see what boinc sees...open with notepad not IE.

The first time for some strange reason the system give that error if we don't edit with notepad even with xml editor gives the same error.

Now I can edit with xml editor with no problem the first time I was around that for 2 days till started from scratch with notepad.

wow you are just unlucky... so atleast now it sees the cc_config.xml but its having a hard time reading it.. so from what im reading to get that error it might mean the format in which that free viewer might have saved it in is causing issues... so i would delete the cc_config.xml and make a new one again this time use only notepad cause that free viewer might be muking things up..

That is true but I didn't said to edit the file there is something on the file that don't let it pass as a control character or something like that as I said I don't know what it is, I just know it worked for me this way. Editing the previous file didn't work for me either.

SLI is a technology to make your multiple GPUs act as if they are a single massive GPU. SLI is not required or even desired, for BOINC. BOINC doesn't use that technology at all. It assigns one task per GPU, regardless of SLI.

I think part of the problem might be the text editor. In notepad when you use "Save As" make sure the encoding is set to ANSI

at first i was going to the other file but yes now i have been going into the C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ folder.

I can only think of one last try to do. Someone make a cc_config.xml like the one you need and (on xml) and send to you as an attachment. and when you download you save it on C:\ProgramData\BOINC\. I don't know how to do send the file in here.

never have i been able to get 2 cards crunching on 1 box ive tried it before with the plug in 2 monitors way. didnt work either. i think im just gonna upgrade to a fre 560's! but hey pwrguru did give me 2 great working cards my world of tanks now plays on max settings! lol the ati i have no clue whats wrong maybe we tackle that next?lol

Only time I ever ran into a problem where my motherboard did not see dual cards is when I installed one card and all the drivers, then installed the other card..

I fixed it by completely uninstalling all the nvidia drivers and reinstalled them.... It worked for me and at this point you really have nothing to lose...

As far as the ATI card, I never really played around with it too much but I know it I was having a problem trying to get it to crunch...Can't remember the exact problem... If all else fails, RMA it and let them take a look at it...

Download this file directly to C:\ProgramData\BOINC if you can, else copy this file for C:\ProgramData\BOINC and then delete the .txt extension out.

And restart the computer.

Let us see if it is your xml editor that is having problems.

i think what did it was i removed the sli cable. didnt need one apparently.
