I'm working on the specs for a new box since the Intel i7 950 CPU is on sale at Microcenter for $199. Yep, $279 - $80 instant savings. Unfortunately that is in store only and limit 1 per customer. I'm definitely going to grab one of those today. I was thinking of putting in dual 5850's but now that the 6970's are out and priced at about the same, I may just have to go with one of those instead. Keep us posted on how it performs.

for PG's PPS app, ATI 6970 sucks at.... took 27 min 13 sec for 1 WU with Aqua running 100%. after this app, I will run w/o aqua running and see if theres a difference. After that I will try MW.

w/o aqua, got 26min 50 sec for the WU.

ill keep PG until the challenge is over.

On the PG forum there is a lot of chatter about that very thing. For PG the CUDA code is just more efficient at this point in time. That card will rock DNETC, Collatz and MW as I'm sure you know.

Unfortunately, to know which card you have, the BOINC client needs to tell the server and the server also has to know about it. Since all that crap is hard-coded in the boinc apps, that means using a 6.12.xx client (which have some pretty big work scheduler issues at the moment) and convincing the project admins to upgrade the server software (not a minor undertaking since DA keeps moving all the code around which makes it a PITA to merge in the project specific changes.

My 6970, which finally arrived last night, shows as "ATI Unknown" and is getting send the "5xxx" WUs from DNETC. I don't know if they have "6xxx" specific WUs or not.

FYI, the DNETC MB says to abort any 1.32 ATI tasks. That will cause it to revert back to the 1.31 tasks since the new 1.32 app which was supposed to be faster was actually about 4 times slower.

I increased the power control setting to +20 inthe powerTune option, and this decreased the time for a MW WU by about 1.3. from 2 or 3 min to 1:12 or 1:50. Next I will start to overclock :P

cant turn it off. but playing around with it and doing some overclocking, i got it running at 950 for the GPU and using default memory timings. increasing memory speed o the max in the ATI control panel only shaved 1 second off the compute time, so not worth it. and as for the powertune, i used GPUZ to check the gpu load, and found that using a setting of +3 was enough for it to not throttle the GPU at all, even with overclocking. with the fan speed at 55%, my temp is 86C. my times are now 1:03/1:35 for the 2 MW WUs types.

i revisited dnetc do to MW being down. I nabed one of the 6xxx WU this time, and also retuned the power utilization so its not throtteling the GPU, i can now do a WU in around 800-810 seconds (about 13.5 min). much better than the 58min i was getting earlier! :D
