View Full Version : BOINC on Chrome Books?

Is it possible to install BOINC on any of the three available Chrome Books? There are not many specs provided on their website and I was not sure if there was much of any HD space to install software. I am forced to get a small laptop as I cannot lug my massive laptop (sheer size and weight due to wanting as much crunching power as possible) and I cannot take a touch screen, so a tablet is out of the running. So that leaves a netbook like piece, enter the Chromebooks.

Reason I ask is I do not want to buy anything computing related with out being able to run BOINC on it. (Heck, I wish that quad core HTC phone could run BOINC)

Thanks ahead of time. :)

I don't think you can on a Chromebook since they don't have hard drives. All storage is done online or through the cloud. Maybe the higher end one have a hard drive though. Not sure. But BOINC won't work without one :(

That is what I was figuring, but I wanted to check from the Pro's.

May I ask for a small, lightweight, carry around all the time options for Chromebook like performance suggestions?

And you say you can't do a tablet? Reason? Issues with the touch screen aspect perhaps?

You could probably get an external hard drive and make it work...maybe. Not sure how you make it download something to your computer instead of google's server but it should be possible.

Hey Mumps,

Yes, touch screen gives me fits because I prefer to type fast and have the tactile satisfaction that I know I hit the correct key. Not to mention large hands well worn from years of working out.

OK. Just wondering. Because there are tablet options that also give you add-on keyboards. I agree that those On-Screen Keyboards are tough on typing speeds and accuracy for those of us with big-clunky hands. :)

I guess that is an option, I will dig around. Not looking for big power as this is just on a budget and it seemed silly to but a computer not to have some BOINC crunching.

Thoughts on these:

The size, thickness and weight of the netbook is pretty much on target for what I am needing, unless there are tablet with a keyboards that I am not seeing or know about.

Found one of the Chromebooks have a HD:

But, I don't think ChromeOS is able to have BOINC installed, correct?

There is BOINC-on-a-thumb-drive too. No internal storage required.

Thanks for the link. I guess I am flying a little blind not knowing much about what Chrome OS can do or will allow.
