Not that it's a huge deal, but AMD is releasing their own true HD 7990 soon. Could be the end of this month at the soonest, but before july for sure.

Their partners have full permission to change anything they like, so you may even expect a liquid cooled version someday.

The bad news for Asus is this GPU is expected to be at least very close to as fast as the Ares II, and definitely faster than any other "7990" for sale today. The GPU uses 2 of the Tahiti XT2 GPU chips, which are the ones found on the 7970 GHz Edition. Final clocks haven't been released, but all the other specs are basically the same as every other 7990.

Edit: Oh yeah, they're releasing a 7790 soon too. Expected to be ~10% slower than a 7850.

Hope this new one works better than the one they sold Zombie! :p

Nice little game of dirty pool AMD played on its partners. Having them test market viability for a 7990 and then upping the ante. I bet Asus & PowerColor are fuming.....

Possibly. Or, the other way to look at it, is AMD did not have the resources to do this out the gate, so they quite literally said to their partners, "Here's the chips and see if you can make something work. If you can, sell it." -- so who knows how much ASUS, etc made off having the first "7990" back when it was big news . . . there is something to be said for that first unit of anything available to market. Heck, they might have even made an extra $50 to $100 profit off each card, which is huge. For all we know, the partners might have pressured them into "allowing" them to create a 7990 before they were ready for the real deal.

I agree with you - I think they did it wrong, and yeah, you could be right about the beta testing, which would be dirty play - but there could be more sides to the story...

The 'real' Radeon HD 7990 might be pushed back until Oct. 29th :( AMD is wanting to bundle the 7990 with Battlefield 4 which scheduled to be released then. Booooooooo

I hope AMD decides not to wait that long and/or BF4 is released much sooner. By the time late October is here, the 8990 would be right around the corner. I do intend to get one.

Pretty nice review results actually. If I *had* to have the latest and greatest, I'd take one over the Titan. Mops the floor in any OpenCL apps. Of course, you would hope those projects would have dedicated CUDA apps as well, and then it would be a much more even race. But still - Adobe, AutoCAD, etc - the big players are shifting to OpenCL support and not doing CUDA now, so the game may slowly be changing for AMD/Nvidia.

@Zombie - have you tried any of the latest drivers with your "officially unofficial" 7990 that was unstable? I wonder if things will work better for you now that AMD has their own on the block and maybe there are some tweaks in the drivers they will and/or have already just made to help this.

John P. Myers
04-24-13, 06:25 PM
The end result is that while an unofficial 7990 would be a 450W+ part, AMD can deliver the same or better performance while consuming much less power, putting the 7990 within the all-important 375W envelope

There you go Z. Save some more money on your ridiculous power bill :)

Decided to take a chance on this XFX 7990 malta: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150694

The XFX cooler worries me a bit, but since I have only one usable gpu slot open and there is room for the 3 slot design, I thought I would risk it. The sabertooth isn't 3 GPU card friendly (had to hang a third card it in once). Price is good compared to any used 7990 I can see. If the cooler doesn't work out, might be able to get a reference or third party one and still come out cheaper.

Sold out already. I did grab one, just hope it was a good choice. The price seemed right.

Interesting not only are they sold out, Newegg has increased the price from $649.99 to $719.99. Must have been an EmSti only sale. I had only searched for 7990 on their site to see if they had any refurbished 7990s. More likely, they just realized they forgot to price gouge on this GPU, lately it seems like they are charging more than anyone else. Could it be they jack the price on anything that sells out fast these days?

John P. Myers

I've noticed they do that too. Used to be they'd only jack up the price $20 or so on a "just released" item like a new GPU or CPU. But lately i've noticed them jacking the price up as much as $50, and additional items, like PSUs and RAM and also on anything they have in limited quantities that's popular, even if it's been out a year. I haven't bought much from Newegg lately - been shopping mainly on Amazon, but as of Jan 1st they started charging sales tax in TN (it's 9.75% here!) so that's over with. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed TigerDirect has what i need since so few of Micro Center's good deals are available online.

Best Price in Europe is 520,- Euro , two 7970 cost the same and I think they would make less problems with overheating.

EmSti

The price I paid was less than current prices 2 7970s or 2 r9 280x (unusual for 7990). I can't get 2 more 7970 class gpus comfortably in the box. Given those 2 (price and space), this was my best option. Even it I need to run it at stock speeds, I will get more out of the PC than just adding a single GPU while balancing single and double precision crunching capability. Of course, I am assuming the XFX gpu works properly.

I do wish I could have found a review of the xfx Triple D 7990 with non-reference cooler before I purchased, but the way GPU sales are going these days, I didn't have long to look. I still haven't found a knowledgeable review yet.

XFX is my most stable 7970 so far though its a little bit loud.
About 2 years 24/7 without any troubles.

I had a couple of 5970s and they were junk ... the back GPU on each card had problems with heat. They didn't put the back VRMs under the heat sink!

I also had 2 6990 cards and those were jewels ... they totally solved the heat problem on that card and they worked without a problem. Actually I should say, they worked well but I did have to run the fans almost full bore which made them noisy.

All of the above were XFX. I would think that the 5970 fiasco taught them enough about providing cooling for dual GPUs so I expect it will be a great addition!

Don't relocate to Chicago then. The sales tax is 11.5% there. They also have percentage based gas and cigarette taxes (the latter now up over $13 a pack) so people actually take day trips to DuPage county just to buy smokes and fill up their tanks. Almost makes that $720 GPU seem reasonably priced!

Now a NY resident, I miss MN's 6.5 % sales tax, no Amazon tax and no sales tax on clothes. We went back home to MN for the Christmas week and took advantage of taxes there for the xmas shopping. Saved a ton on clothes alone

Don't forget to pay the NY Use tax on these items in your 2014 NY Income Tax. This is NY, after all. We tax everything -- highly. If you follow the law, you will have saved nothing. :(

And it doesn't help to buy out of state since the state income tax will "estimate your online purchases" for you which means tack on a few hundred dollars in "lost sales tax" whether you bought anything out of state or not. I'm not sure there are any non-crooked politicians left in Illinois.

Newegg is now selling them for $899 each. Wish I had bought 2 originally @$649. Sell one on ebay to pay for the other.
Oh, BTW - new card is up and running @ gpu clock 1100 and memory 1500 with stock voltage. It is running well on temp with another 7970 in the case (I have the 7990 as the lower card to get first chance of cool air flowing up from bottom of the case). All three engines are running collatz at 98%/99% load, temps:
7970 @ 1200 clock - 71 F (up from 60 F when it was running alone)
7990 gpu1 @ 1100 - 76 F
7990 gpu 2 @ 1100 - 71 F

Notes on the XFX 7990 with their custom cooler (Triple Dissipation - FX-799A-6NF9):
Voltage is lock.
Max clock I could pick in my current version of MSU Afterburner is 1100 mhz. Guess I could try to upgrade MSI and see if a new version has higher option, but I don't want to go any higher....yet. And I don't want to do 2 changes at once. From what I have read on 7990 o.c. of 1100 MHz is about as good as it will get, but I could be wrong.
It is quiet without the any coil whine that I have read about on reference 7990s.

Edit: removed comment about the gtx 690 engines' difference in temp. I found that one GPU was under performing and I fixed the issue. They are only 5 degrees apart.
