I will be there anyway (at NFS) but I don't know if the team wants to join on this challenges. I would like that anyway.

I will keep on crunching what I can till my birthday. :)

That is to say till the end of the second challenge, I will make 19 or is it 18 at 12th April , good that my memory is in a very bad shape. :D

I swear I didn't knew about this challenges or I would have waited to call you for both of them. Now I got really confused. :p

Do as you wish, in spite I will be on both challenges crunching for the team.

I'll run both starting on March 30th.

I'll be honest...I'll be off if NFS in 2 days. At that point I'll have my 5000 hrs and be moving to something else, so I won't be in either challenge. Sorry, just not a math fan...but I'll give what I can until then. I have a couple of gpu milestones I want to hit in the next 30 days, once those are met the gpus go down for the summer. NC heat and gpu crunching don't go well together unless you have ac blowing into the boxes and that is not economically feasible.

Edit: that's not to say I wouldn't consider a short gpu challenge during the summer, but 24/7 is out.

Your help is being very appreciated on the time you could give to the project. I believe in the use of mathematics and general knowledge for a better world, many THANKS Al.

I understand the badges and the stones as a tool to get better crunching but I don't think that could be the only tool of our crunching time as points aren't really the same for different projects we have different weighing for points, badges or stones and in my opinion that doesn't reflect the utility of the project.

But that is only my opinion and I am only another cruncher trying to do my best to have a good time in Boinc and in the Forum of my team as I always did in all the teams I was in, all to have a better world.

Well I write to much sorry for that.:o

I'll try to throw a few Box's on the Challenge's, still need to move my NFS App's up the Chart, have so many other App's going though it's hard to concentrate on just 1 or a few App's but will see what I can do ...

So who can add SETI.USA to the challenges?

STE\/E
03-28-13, 04:19 AM
Only the Founder of a Team can add a Team to the BoincStats Challenges, the Founder is the only one who can create a Challenge too ..

pinhodecarlos
03-28-13, 08:40 AM
Who's the team founder?

Carlos

Duke of Buckingham
03-28-13, 09:12 AM
I am not sure of who is the team founder at NFS but I think F$ and Mike know the password to access the team founder maybe there are others (or so I think).

Please F$, Mike or DP inscribe the team to perform the challenges. We will try to make the best we can.

We are the best producing team for NFS this last few days and will catch LAF before the challenge, I am sure.

Less than one hour to start the challenge, something tells me the competition will be fierce. Let us see what we can do about it. I have a small bunker, saving for a rainy day. :o

I am finishing the genefer one more day of crunching and then only NFS.

I am ready. :D

Yhea but they are a bit lost, I think NFS has not computation power for the dumping. The teams doesn't agree with users. They will fix it has they did the last time, is only a matter of time.

Mumps is doing what he said on ChatZilla. Thanks Mumps the eternal number one on CPU crunching. I don't think Mumps needs to bunker in any CPU projects Carlos.

Some worry (a lot) and bunker (a lot), Mumps just crunch. :D

Go Mumps, Go Team, straight to the first position, I am sure. :-bd

No problems for me from NFS server maybe it was a temporary problem due to the challenge. Greg is not a very communicative guy so I don't know what happened.

We need all we can get at this project, if we want to win.

A good news for the Windows users. Experimental lasieve4_64, compiled with MinGW-w64, has been achieved by a member of mersenneforum so it is just a matter of time until Greg sets it up on the NFS@Home server to be tested. This version will be lasieve5f application for Windows 64 bits users.
I will let you all know about it or just check the RSS NFS@Home news.

Wow, this project is kicking my but. One of my 24 core linux boxes that was rock solid has a 25% error rate. The 32 core box has some bad memory right now that I haven't had time to fix so I'm not even trying that system on NFS.

I had never had error tasks on NFS both in Linux and Windows.

Maybe you are using too much of memory pagination and the system gets lost on it.

So, in general, is linux faster on NFS? On my old xeon boxes it seems to be a draw with win 7. With my 8150 amd it would appear to be a lot faster under a linux vm...though I haven't finished a wu under the vm yet, so I don't have true time to base that assumption on.

Edit:

AMD 8150

Linux - Completed and validated 4,985.10 4,939.05 36.00 14e Lattice Sieve v1.10
Win7 - Completed and validated 6,876.88 6,716.22 36.00 14e Lattice Sieve v1.08

AMD 1035T

Linux - Completed and validated 4,855.67 4,824.20 36.00 14e Lattice Sieve v1.10
Win7 - Completed and validated 7,952.11 7,913.12 36.00 14e Lattice Sieve v1.08

Xeon 5420

Linux - Completed and validated 7,394.07 7,228.74 36.00 14e Lattice Sieve v1.10
Win7 - Completed and validated 7,893.46 7,745.80 36.00 14e Lattice Sieve v1.08

Seems well worth running the vms on the amds, not so much on the old intel xeons.

Man, that's lame. Sorry to hear that. I had one WU error out on my laptop yesterday, but I figured that was because I started and stopped that one too many times! :D Hope it gets sorted out soon for you! Hate to see you lose such a high position in the challenge, you are right up there!

Don't know what the heck happened but every thing I'm getting is erring out across the board (every box) in a few minutes so basically I'm out of work ...

I looked at a few I had done and I had one that everyone(me + 4 others) had errored out on it. Then I had one that the four pevious people had not had enough memory to run the WU! =))

I think I have had about 3 in 1200+ that errored out so far. :)

STE\/E
04-03-13, 02:22 AM
I figured out what happened, some Lattice Garlic Wu's decided to start up & were sucking up their usual 9-10gb of Memory, so with that & the 1gb+ memory each NFS were sucking up on 8 Threads each was to much memory usage & the Wu's started erring on those Box's. I had to trash the Lattice Wu's & now the NFS Wu are running okay again ...

DrPop
04-03-13, 03:34 AM
Wow!!! 9-10GB of RAM for those suckers? Must be some serious data in those WUs or something... glad you figured it out though and can claim your rightful place atop the challenge list. Well, first after Mumps that is! ;). It's kinda like seeing the afterburners light up on Top Gun when he feels like turning them on! :D

Surprisingly I haven't had a single error yet (Knock on Wood) usually I get 1 every so often but none yet ... Does the Box have enough Memory ???

Yep, 32GB for 24 cores. The wu error right at the time the progress meter usually moves off 0% so I am only loosing 3-4 min per task. I'm going to tear the thing apart tomorrow and reinstall all of the memory. Got some new memory on the way also.

Just to let you guys know that Greg is committed to free up some space on the server to make it more stable. I already downloaded and backup all external work that I need to run for NFS@Home (post-processing work). That's about 30-40 GB data he can spare to the challenges.

DrPop
04-03-13, 02:54 PM
Just to let you guys know that Greg is committed to free up some space on the server to make it more stable. ...Thanks, that is a big help. I know some of the guys with bigger farms are pretty reluctant to crunch a project when it's less than 100% because of the backlog it does to their rigs! ;) We all appreciate it when the management of the project is watching and helping! :)

I did my part and backups. I am just waiting for one of his replies to me to see what can we do to make the server even more stable.
There's a lot going on on the back stage of NFS@Home that I try to post here so that people can understand what's going on.
Greg, NFS manager, and post-processing helpers (like me), are trying hard to watch for a healthy server. Bandwidth slot for us are being shrink so that download and upload of wu's are optimal faster for you guys. I also warned my mates to backup the data files so Greg can free up more and more space to the server. Every little help is appreciated.

Anyway, from SETI.USA side we are doing a great job. I just regret I can't help on running BOINC but I am helping on post-processing stage.

Carlos

STE\/E

I'll probably have my 5 Linux Box's on the Project until I can get all the APP's over 5000 Hr's, once that happens then I'll be done with the Project possibly forever ... Way to much demand on the systems with the Memory usage & the usual amount of error's ...

pinhodecarlos
04-04-13, 09:24 AM
The linux version is faster because it is 64 bit compatible. As I said previously a new win64bits build was achieved but it needs testing.
About the errors, when sieving you guys need to reduce the system overclock because the client is very sensible. It is almost as sensible as running an LLR test (prime hunt).
I never had errors while running NFS because my system is stable, I have plenty of memory and I only attach to BOINC one project at the time. I don't share BOINC with a bunch of projects. Maybe there are conflicts between projects.

That is so and we will finish the challenge very close to the 4th place. If Carlos crunching was counting for the team we should be almost already there.

We made 11M on the challenges till now and about 3 to 4M before that and we still have about 3 to 4M more to do before the end. I would say that all this STOMP may have given us almost 20M on about 3 weeks a very big deed in fact.

I had also contacted Enrique Arratia that joined the team and he is a usual cruncher of NFS, I hope Carlos can join him at the end of the challenge to keep the pressure for the 4th place that would be even better.

Keep on keeping.:)

I lost two boxes. I tried to turn them on for the challenges but I don't know what is going on. One is completely dead, the other the power supply starts but nothing happens after. I moved disk and graphic card from one to another and got same symptoms. I was willing to install linux on both machines but not spend money on them so they will stay dead. Might sell some parts as memory ( 2x2 +2x1 GB DDR2 800 MHz and 4x2 GB DDR3 1333 MHz), graphic cars, CPU, etc. The strange thing is that the motherboard LED turns green but the OS doesn't boot.

The laptop is running a post-processing job but after it I will be joining to see if we can easily catch 4th place.

About Enrique Arratia, I invited him to join the team as I made to others without team association. About his stats I can't do nothing because the challenges stats are external to NFS@Home project, they are hosted by BoincStats.com.

Well Carlos I just didn't know about Enrique invitation, but believe is here because of all of us, the team, not because of me I am so sure of that, no one is more important than the other, I am just happy that he join me to their friends.

About your problems on computation, I never thought to blame you, it is a real honor to me that you are crunching with Greg, my team mate, my country mate, my dear friend, I hope to be a bit with you on all your crunching, we make what we can, not what we want, none of us ...

The 4th place will be a hard going with a lot of time, the 5th place was far more than I expected.

The team made for us a lot of very good work and I am happy with that, yes I am because this is my team.

We are the best, you are the best and I am with you all.

Soon as my big laptop is fixed, I will be laying heavy on NFS as I used to do before. Great to see we had a strong showing from our team on one of my favorite projects. :)
