View Full Version : Who thinks this is the same RAM as the DDR3 1600?

So Newegg has this 8GB set on sale for $51. Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104231&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL041813&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL041813-_-EMC-041813-Index-_-DesktopMemory-_-20104231-L05C

I have a set of the HyperX blu - DDR3 1600 in Cheetah, would love to get 16GB at some point. I noticed my 1600 set shows up as 1333 in the BIOS, but you just set it to 1.65V and it will run 1600 just fine.

Then, I just happened to notice this 1333 RAM is rated for 1.5V. :-? Hmmm....do you think it's exactly the same RAM, just cheaper and with a sticker saying to run it at 1333 and 1.5V instead of 1600 and 1.65V?

The savings are only like $15 or something, so I can save up more and wait until the "real" 1600 goes on sale if you guys don't think they're the same RAM. But it's making me curious.

I'm not an expert in overclocking RAM, but .15V seems like a big difference which makes me think they are not the same. Not that you couldn't OC the RAM to 1600 anyway....

50/50 chance it's the same. RAM companies have done these little tricks for a few years now. Another trick they'll do is, for example, they sell a DDR3 1600MHz CL9 kit and tell you it runs @ 1.65V. Then they'll try to sell you a DDR3 1600MHz kit @ 1.5V making you think this kit is more power efficient, but then you look closely and notice the lower voltage kit is CL10, so it's actually slower :p They'll even go so far as to sell you the same RAM, like what you're talking about, one at 1333 MHz @ 1.5V and one at 1600MHz @ 1.5V but increase the CL on the 1600MHz kit to keep the voltage the same. It can get tricky if you don't pay close attention :)

1.65V is actually still within DDR3 spec. All DDR3 should be able to handle that voltage continuously. The thing about running 1333MHz at 1600MHz is warranty, but as long as you don't admit it, they'll never know.
