Samsung Electronics Corporation has developed the next generation wireless technology, it was announced today. Samsung has developed the core technology for the world's first 5G network which the company says will be ready for users in 2020.

Under the new platform, users can download and upload data at speeds of up to tens of gigabits per second (Gbps), compared to 75 megabits per second (Mbps) posted by the fourth-generation long-term evolution (LTE) service.

The new wireless technology will enable customers to access a stream of data faster than the current fourth-generation network and download an entire movie in less than a second, the world's largest smartphone maker said.

...and the carriers will still have ridiculous data caps, making the extra speed meaningless.

Agreed. When you see "speeds of up to tens of gigabits per second" I translate that as meaning "about 10% of the estimate". That way, they can "improve" it over several years charging more and more for each "upgrade" even though the technology was already there in the first place and costs them nothing to no longer throttle the data.
