From the looks of the specs and the price, it would appear Sony might regain some ground here - which would be good, because they are a hurting unit the last few years! I think for consoles it all boils down to their "epic" titles, though right? Like if their particular franchises can make enough multi-million dollar hits to make the console worth selling at cost or even a loss ... over time they make the money back on royalties.
Man, you'd have to have some pretty deep pockets or a lot of credit - or both - to run a business model like that! :p

The reason the Xbox 360 became so popular in the first place was price. It was far cheaper than a PS3 so naturally people bought it instead. M$ was selling Xbox's for a loss, expecting to make the money back through the sale of games, which they did. However the PS3 was a much more capable machine - it had Bluray, XDR RAM which was the fastest on earth at the time, a CPU co-designed by IBM, Nvidia GPU - Xbox's specs couldn't touch the PS3. But it cost more. Then M$ overhyped Halo which is an exclusive Xbox title which made ppl think they needed an Xbox over a PS3 even more. People were oblivious to the fact you had to pay a monthly fee to use Xbox Live while the Playstation Network was free. Luckily enough people knew better than to fall for it to keep Sony afloat :)

Now we have the PS4. Again, it has better specs than the Xbox - higher memory bandwidth, better GPU, etc. - but this time it's going to cost less because Sony is selling them at cost or maybe at a small loss. The PS4 will also release with more games available and it won't have a crippling bloated OS. M$ fails.

Xbox One is just announced, while Microsoft admits they have lost the war against Sony PlayStation 4 in the most subtle way during their “reveal event” May 21, 2013...Unlike the PlayStation 4 APU architecture, that has a heavy focus on GPU accelerated simulations and computations, the Xbox One will not shine on GPU compute heavy workloads, another major feature that game developers actually wanted and focus on, simply because the memory bandwidth available to the whole SoC or GPU compute is just inadequate given the large scale of scalar ALUs present in the GPU...The death blow would be, none of in-game visuals from the previewed games have extensive use of GPU accelerated features such as physics, unlike the games shown in the PlayStation 4 unveiling event.
EDIT: M$ claims Xbox One has ~200GB memory bandwidth. This is false. The new Xbox has a bandwidth of just 68.26 GB/s between the CPU/GPU and RAM. The PS4 has 176 GB/s bandwidth. The Xbox does have some on-die eSRAM for the GPU to use which has a bandwidth of ~102 GB/s, but it's only 32 MB and will be seen by the system as L4 cache, not actual RAM. Another ~34 GB/s goes to peripherals. What M$ did was add these numbers together to come up with their "200 GB bandwidth", which is just more of their BS marketing speak. In reality, you can't add those numbers together, as they run in parallel.
