Here is a link to the Muon g-2 50ft electromagnet that is being moved to Fermilab in IL overnight tonight. They are having a party to welcome the magnet tomorrow at 5:30 PM.

Wife thinks this is cool and wants to get up at 2am to see the move... Sent her a link to Yoyo@home and told her to search for Muon and then made the comment that it's pretty cool that research projects use this cool equipment (or simulate using this equipment) and then use people's home computers to assist in their research huh? She's not a BOINC believer yet thinks this is cool...

Yes I am a huge nerd and went out at 1AM to see the Magnet. Of course where we wanted to see it, the magnet had already passed so we went to a spot that we knew they hadn't gone passed yet and parked. That involved a 3 hour wait, but was totally worth it. 1461

I waited to watch the video on Youtube and slept through the night.

video doesn't do it justice though... Totally awesome to see in person the effort put into moving this thing.

The shear size was just massive.

Is it magnetic at all, sitting on the truck? Or only with power?

Electromagnets are only magnetic once power is put to it. You need the electricity going through the coils to make the magnetic field.

Don't forget that if you want to join the party at Fermilab tonight, it starts at 5:30 PM.

Since it has to move really slowly (< 10 mph) wouldn't it be funny if someone hooked up a car battery to it when no one was looking?

Since it has to move really slowly (< 10 mph) wouldn't it be funny if someone hooked up a car battery to it when no one was looking?

From what I heard, they were doing 15mph down I-88 because they had all 4 lanes of the highway to themselves. However, on the local roads they had to move 5mph or less and continually stop to make sure they weren't going to hit anything. They also had to take down all the speed limit signs, turn lane signs, etc.

Funny thing at the end was that the guy went to put the sign back in the holder with the arrow that there is a median and the lane moves slightly. Now, remember that all they did when taking them down was set them on the ground next to it. One worker says to the other "island?" the 2nd worker turns the sign around so the first worker can see, looks up at the sign, and says "Island". Now wouldn't that question only apply if they moved the signs to one common place? Even more funny would be if they put left turn lane signs where speed limit signs were, or put signs in backwards.

As for hooking up power, somehow I think that magnet would require WAY more than a car battery. My wife asked how it worked and I explained, that a magnet that size when powered up could probably pick up or hurl a car and/or a truck quite far. With all the people watching not sure that would have been interesting to see it turned on and have people 50-100ft away being sucked in by their belt buckle, zippers on their jackets, etc.
