Is it my imagination or does BitcoinUtopia eat up an entire CPU core for crunching with nvidia cards? I didn't notice this until I just compiled a new app. I noticed that the CPU time was very close to the runtime.
Reading the help files with the cgminer source code, the README file goes into detail about dependencies for the app. One of the optional dependencies is 'jansson'. Somehow I noticed that Gentoo had it, so I installed it and recompiled cgminer. Naturally the configuration pulled in the new libjansson library and compiled in the support for it.
Long story short, I'm now getting 50% CPU usage for an nvidia bitcoinutopia task instead of 100%.
