I built my PC for gaming, but I've got no time for gaming lately and found that BOINC would be a better use for my PC then letting it sit around idle while watching Netflix. I'm watching the Star Trek series over this summer I've seen the original Star Trek 3 seasons, and then all the episodes in TNG, now working on DS-9. My PC has enough power to run this and watch Netflix smoothly so I figured I would let it. Only started a few days ago, because it's the first time I've heard about it. And of all things it was on the Science channel talking about SETI that I had heard about this and figured I would give it a shot. Didn't Realize this had been going since 2004. WoW, I'm Behind>.<.... I guess it's never too late to start.

Mcnef is my gaming name and what I use in forums, not that I do much in them, it's just what I go by. I'll Be Around.

Hello Mcnef,

It's nice to meet you. Glad you found our little corner of the net.

Star Trek? Oh ya baby!!!! Been a fan of ST since I watched ST:TOS when it first aired.

Always good to have another cruncher on the team! And gamer systems are very goood for crunching... I play WoW and crunch numbers at the same time, so no problems there! :)

Welcome to BOINC land. We may even have some intelligent life around here somewhere.

At least when it comes to questions about crunching I believe the member of the Team are very intelligent.....sometimes. Welcome and don't be a stranger.

Glad to meet you, and thanks for stopping by the forums! Don't be a stranger, we like to have all kinds of great challenges and things for the crunching team - this is where we discuss most of them. ;)
Thank you for joining the team.

Hi Mcnef, good to see you here and posting. you can find lost of things here. mostly you will find a bunch of nuts. :) just thought I would let you know that the boinc program was started in 2004, but the classic seti program started back in 1999. you will find a few of us still left from the olden days. have fun.

CPU OC'ed to 4452 MHz on a nice ASUS Board

GPU's OC'ed to 983MHz

I think I've got this pegged as far as any one can push my rig, with what I've got being Air Cooled. As a matter of fact the Temp's range between 75-85C, and I've seen it go past 90C but I've got the thermo sensors to regulate when it hits 85C on the CPU. I've got about 8 fans blowing at full capacity! LoL The MoBo it's self never gets above 30C.

Built for Gaming, Used for Crunching LoL.

On my I7 rig with Nvidia cards, I run Primaboinca (http://www.primaboinca.com/) on the CPU and Dirt (http://boinc.freerainbowtables.com/distrrtgen/) on the GPU's that seems to get the best bang for the buck as far as credits go. As far as temps? That always seems to be a loosing battle without liquid cooling. My box has 2 of the giant fans and 3 of the 120MM and it pumps out heat like a furnace. :)

One thing to note: Intel stopped soldering the CPU silicon die to the Integrated Heat Sink (IHS), aka the big metal cap. With all 2nd Gen Sandy Bridge & 3rd Gen Ivy Bridge CPUs they now use Thermal Paste and just glue the IHS to the base (printed circuit board) of the CPU.

For more information on this, see the section entitled "Now for the real reason your Ivy Bridge runs hot." on OverClock.net's [Official] Delidded Club thread (Here (http://www.overclock.net/t/1313179/official-delidded-club))

90C Stock? X_X Do you have the stock cooler on there or some other HSF? Something is definitely not right, they are pretty cool running chips, especially stock with no OC. There are a few things to check: either the HSF is not seated correctly; there is too much or too little (but usually the problem is too much) thermal paste; the thermal paste is not high quality; the fan on your HSF is not running at full RPM; there is very poor airflow (as in not much at all) in your case; and lastly, the motherboard could be over-volting your CPU too much if you have everything set to auto.
If you can, I'd start looking into some of these things if possible - not trying to tell you what to do with your rig, but I am concerned for the longevity of your CPU if you crunch 24/7 with those kind of temps! Then again, maybe you'll get lucky and get the one "super pure" silicon CPU that can hack those temps for 3 - 4 years before it croaks. If it were me, I wouldn't really want to take that gamble though unless I had to. ;)

Jed is right. At 90C something is wrong. E-30, did you build that system or is a pre-built box from someone like Dell, Gateway, etc? Or is it a laptop?
