I looked trough the threads and I do not see any reference for this card. Is this card any good for BOINC use? I am wondering as my local seller has reduced his price by $20.00 and is selling around the $130.00 mark...Shall I buy it, forget it and put the money towards a 7970?
I found this at overclockers.net

Thank you Al. It seems it might be worth while to give it a try on savings on Power consumption alone and it appears to be a reasonable card for the price as a second card as quite a a few could do with a second card in the system. I'll buy one and see how it goes...

Careful. I think the driver is different for the 7790 vs other 7xxx boards. It looks that way on the driver download page (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx) anyway. I assume that means you cannot mix the 7790 with other 7xxx cards in the same machine. Disclaimer: No research done at all. This is just me making assumptions.

Thank you zombie67, I appreciate the warning. What I propose to do is to buy one card to test it and install it as first GPU than install the second GPU an Nvidia GTX580. I learned from experience that the AMD card must be installed first.
Your reply is a good call for anybody else that might be contemplating buying this card later on. Thanks... In about a weeks time, I will be able to report how it went for I have to turn off all machines for a week but will run these two GPUs to see the results.

What Z said is correct. The chip in the 7790 is actually from next gen line which will be released next month. This is probably the reason for the price cut. They've been cutting prices here in the states for awhile now. You could probably find it cheaper elsewhere but I don't know how you'd feel when thenew cards come out next month and the price is reduced even more...

That is a very important consideration at the moment. Thank you. I can wait..

I've been running a 7790 for at least 6 months now. For collatz, it works well and is faster than an HD 6850. It is NOT fast at double precision though. Yes, it uses different drivers, or at least it did at one time. I haven't upgraded the driver in a while (don't fix what isn't broken right?) so I don't know if that is still the case or not.
I've been running a Sapphire factory-overclocked 7790 for several weeks and I am very happy with it. It's putting out 550k per day on DiRT or over 300k on Bitcoin Utopia while sipping power. It plays well with a 6570 I have in the same rig, running the latest Catalyst drivers.
When the 7790 first came out, it was recommended to use the 7790-specific drivers. Now it runs fine on 13.4 or latest beta. The only issue I have noticed so far is that GPU usage % does not display correctly in GPU-Z.
I chose this card because it is one of the most energy-efficient in the AMD line, and I got one while it was on sale for $105 after rebate. I'd buy another without hesitation.

I love this card for good performance on DiRT, Collatz, Seti, Milkyway and the retired POEM project. If room heat is a consideration, you want this card. It runs very cool and quiet at 85 watts. The one complaint I have about it is that it doesn't seem to run MooWrapper -- something to do with Cal, I think. If anyone knows how to get MooWrapper to run on the 7790, I'd like to hear about it. :)

AMD changed the instruction set on the 7xxx GPUs so they no longer work with CAL. A few of them pretend to work but only do half the work they should be doing and/or generate garbage results but without reporting an error. So, chances are, until Moo comes out with an OpenCL app, you won't be able to use it on Moo.

What driver are you running with the 7790? I recently re-loaded OS on the machine and now the only driver I can get to work is the original 7790-specific one. When I try to install 13.9 or 13.12 over that one, I get an error message that "AMD Driver not installed" upon reboot. I can't get Milkyway to run (never have been able to run MooWrapper on this card) and DiRT WUs error out.

After installing/re-installing the OS, you must keep updating until you get .net framework 4.0. The newer drivers require it or they won't install.
I have a copy of Net 4.5 on a USB Stick along with any other pertinent Updates needed when reinstalling a OS ...
