Hi guys :o,

I'm putting together a list to order parts to build a new machine.
Any advice anyone can add would be great cuz you guys know this stuff !
$1,500 for the box is about the limit at the moment because I'm buying 2 new flat screens as well
and have no idea which screens are good. 24-26 inch ones would be good.

Here is the list so far:

Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I73770
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116502

MSI Z77MA-G45 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130647

Rosewill Green Series RG630-S12 630W Continuous @40°C,80 PLUS BRONZE Certified, Single 12V Rail, Active PFC "Compatible with Core i7,i5" Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182200

Corsair Carbide Series 400R Graphite grey and black ATX Mid Tower Gaming Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139008

2 of these for 16 GB ram:
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345

It's been 6 years since buying a new machine so I definately want this one to be good.
Issues I'm concerned about are compatibility such as with the ram, psu with vid card etc. so nothing has to be mailed back to new egg. And which operating system to use I have no clue since vista.

Hopefully all these links are clickable above.
Anything missing or anything should be swapped ?
Please advise and thanks !
See ya on team chat.

CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B

At first glance, your RAM. I recommend this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226403 Faster (less latency), better, cheaper.

Here's the issue: Other than it being Corsair, which has the highest RMA rate of any brand of memory, when you buy 2 dual-channel kits and stick them in the same computer, expect the advertised specs to no longer hold true. Most likely you could get your 8 GB Corsair kit to work @1600MHz with 9-9-9-24 timings @ 1.5v, but only if you only used that 8GB. Adding the 2nd kit will cause you to either increase the timings, increase the voltage, or lower the MHz rating to get it to work at all. This is why it's better to purchase a 4x4GB at once, so you know you'll get the proper speed, timings and voltage as the product says it offers.

For the Mushkins linked above, out of the package their Cas Latency is already 11% lower than those Corsairs, and the kit is $10 cheaper than 2 of the slower Corsair kits. :)

Edit: Oh, and you're missing a GPU :D

The only thing I see you missing is gpu and watter cooling for you processer it's a must with I 7

@ JPM: Not to argue with you but I have two Corsair Vengeance 6GB sets in this desktop. No issues with fubar timings/CAS.

@DrBackJack: If you want the best All-In-One water cooling solution, check out NCIX.ca (http://www.ncix.ca/) as they are the only place close to the US that sells the Swiftech H220. By a totally bogus court ruling, the H220 cannot be sold in the U.S. But, you CAN still buy one from a foreign etailer. :D

Not to argue, but you don't need a water cooler to cool the 3770k at reasonable clocks.. I have mine modestly oced to 4.4ghz and am using a Noctua NH-14D. Temps rarely get above the mid 60s c. The other has a Hyper 212 evo and isn't much higher. Something about water and electronics I just don't like. :)

No increase in voltage either? Sounds like you got some RAM that has alot of room for overclocking :D

@DrBackJack: Also you didn't mention a hard drive/SSD, but maybe you already have a spare one you planned on using?

Nope, no increase in voltage...and I don't know a thing about ocing RAM. The only time I've tried it I got tired of looking at the blue screens, so I just left it alone.

Edit: sorry, that wasn't meant for me.

Ok, I see your point on the ram so it's switched to the 4 x 4GB you recommended above.
On the hard drive ? mmm
Definately one of these 1 TB Sata 7200's at least.

Which video card would you go with this setup ?
Something that will run any GPU project well is good like for the POGO challenge next month and is compatible with the board and PSU.

GPU cards: Almost any project that supports GPU crunching, supports both kinds. Let's see, projects that support only one kind.....

GPUGRID: nVidia only

Heh. Other then that, most projects do better with one over the other. But there is no obvious "most projects do better with" card.

If you are doing dirt and SETI geforce are better other then that they both do about the same

Best bang for the GPU buck is a lightly used HD 7970 off Ebay or Amazon. At their current prices, nothing else has the computing power to touch what you can get from one of those. If you have a specific project goal in mind, there may be a different card that would serve you slightly better, but if you're just looking for best credits for the dollar... HD 7970.

Hi Dr Pop,

Is this the card your talking about here ?

I'll be putting a couple of reference 7970s up for sale soon if anyone is interested. One MSI, one Sapphire. They are both 925MHz. stock core clock but both will do 1125MHz. on stock voltage. Never tried to run them higher. AFAIK they are both voltage unlocked.

Yes, that's the card! Massive crunching power for the price. However, JPM says that style leaves heat in the case, whereas the "reference design" GPUs like Nanoprobe is selling have one fan at the end of a "tunnel" built into the card that exhausts the hot air out of the case. I think the card you linked to is more sexy - in fact, I almost bought that exact model - but then JPM schooled me on the designs, so I ended up getting a reference design one instead. :D

That ain't pressure! Pressure is when someone like Mumps or 'beer start getting on him to get it done so he can bunker for the challenge!

I like the I7 "K" series. I have a 2600K and a 3770K and both run well in the Asus board that I have and are bothe ox'd by the Asus software to extreme. The 3770K is showing 4.24 on the Asus monitor. I have not done any voltage increases or ony tweaking. I just use the Asus suite II that came with the boards.
